Hi! Does anyone else notice a link between calories consumed and alopecia?

Yep. If you eat too few calories hair loss can definitely occur

I don't focus on calories, just keeping carbs around 20 g/day. I eat when I am hungry and don't want to add calories to prevent hair loss. I wonder if the group has suggestions. I take biotin daily and a thyroid prescribed medication. I don't think it's thyroid, my medication has been very stable for years and I check blood work regularly.

Losing weight rapidly can also trigger hair loss, but that's somewhat mitigated on a lower carb plan...

How long have you been Keto? And are you hypo or hyper thyroid? Since hair loss is a common thyroid symptom it is very possible that there is a link. When was the last time you had blood drawn?

My thyroid meds had to be adjusted, almost out of nowhere, about 9 months into keto. I started having some random swelling, which is apparently a huge sign of needing to adjust meds... So I agree with @Phrick ... At least time to get checked out.

Oh! I notice swelling in my hands too, but did not know that it could be thyroid related. @KnitOrMiss - Thank you!

@Phrick - keto since Jan 1, hypothyroid, and blood work done in Jan.

It is clear now that you ladies pointed it out. In keto 90 plus days probably does mean new blood work is due.

I'll call docs office today- THX!!!

Low or insufficient amounts of protein intake can also contribute to this problem.

Yes this! Eat enough protein, being at a deficit will have your body using that energy for the essential things. Growing hair isn't one of them. I researched a bunch when I had the same problem about 4 months in. The good news is it'll start growing again. I think if I had kept a better eye on protein and not gone with such a large deficit I would've been fine.

    These..
Went threw the same thing about 5 months in. When I started noticing the thinning it was already thin..... From what I learned its protein related but I could also add that its rapid weight loss related too. I started taking hair/skin/nails shortly there after (about a month ago or so) I've notice skin isn't as dry, nails are growing fast and hair is getting longer but no notice to new hair growth and it still falling out ever time I wash it. But they say it takes at least 4-5 months to revers the deficiency... Hoping soon!

Yes, hoping for me and you @ettaterrell! I bumped up my biotin and thinking about adding some protein too. I feel like a Guinea pig/science experiment. I tinker with macros to best lose weight and then tinker more to avoid unwanted effects. Lol...

It'll grow back, mine did about 4 months after I noticed it thinning, I had all these tiny little short new hairs sticking straight up lol. they've Notre grown in and I'm back to normal.

I do feel like my hair has been falling out more in recent months. I'm not sure if it's keto-related for me.
