Anyone using a Ketonix to test for ketones? I have a couple questions in it. I've been using for about a day and half.

    I have one I got from a friend, who couldn't get it to work for her. And I can't get it to work for me either. :-/

    Guessing.... Carbs or protein too high, or drinking lots of water?

    (n=1.. mine are always highest in the morning after fasting for the night.)

    Hmm, ya, high protein and high water are both likely candidates.

    Mine don't work. I've been losing under 25 carbs/day for over a week now. Losing a ton of weight. Not one good reading on ketostiks. I've given up on them.

    Try fasting for 3 days without any fluids?

    I'm okay. I can't imagine fasting for 3 days... let alone without fluids. What I'm doing is working. I don't need the ketostiks to tell me I'm in ketosis. You have to be in ketosis at 25 g of carb/day and losing 3.5 lbs/week. Ketostiks are notoriously unreliable for a number of reasons. Someone here will have the relevant links about them.

    Anyone have a good experience? I am thinking about getting one to track my responses to certain food choices. I don't want to spend all that money if they don't work. I'm fat adapted, so my only other choice would be a blood meter and the strips are soooo expensive. Any advice welcome.

    I got the blood monitor which I really appreciated in the beginning, but it really has just become a novelty of late. As some have pointed out -- after a while you just know. I liked that I could test my carb upper limits and still stay in Ketosis, but now it really doesn't have much of a use. I can gage my body's reaction to different foods and carb limits just fine now. I was testing once per week but forgot over the last few weeks.

    I've used the ketonix devise often and it's really been great for learning how my body reacts to different foods. My wife also uses it and it is fasting ting how we can eat the same things and have different reactions. The lesson I've learned is that I'm more insulin resistant than I ever dreamed so keeping my carbs under 50g is pretty important. I've also compared the ketonix devise to the keto sticks and learned quickly that the keto stick weren't worth the time to pee on them.

    Just my experience.

    We're talking about a Ketonix device in this thread, not Ketostix (which, yes, are not a useful tool).

    I use Ketostix near daily in the morning as soon as I get out of bed. My sticks are pretty consistent though this last go around starting up keto after a few weeks off it kept saying I was showing "trace" amounts for quite a while and I was sure I should've had higher levels. I was also not really working out a lot during that time and my carbs were around 27-35 net. Now that I've added exercise, intermittent fasting, and fat bombs into my diet, I'm consistently reading higher levels. Still around 27 -35 net carbs but I think the exercise and IF has help.

    Yes, she is talking about that same measuring device, but the cheap strips are for testing blood glucose --- the ketone strips you feed in to the same machine (not the strips you pee on) are more like $4 each.

    I have a Ketonix Sport. It is an older version. Mine changes color and blinks. My experience is that it works better than peeing on the keto sticks, but is likely less accurate than the blood meter. (I do not own a blood meter.) Positives: Less expensive than blood ketone monitor over time. I hear some people have actually used a cheap breathalyzer to test for ketones.

    A member of MFP correlated her Ketonix readings to her Blood Ketone meter and created a great chart which can be found below

    Yes, I was speaking about the Ketonix testing device. My question is how do you use it if your out and about?? I didn't expect it to be 100% tethered to my computer! I'd like the freedom of bringing it in my purse for a quick check.

    Any wall adapter for a usb plug should work. I'll give it a try when I get home. Or an emergency phone charger?

    The ketonix company sells a battery pack for $15.

    I have an older Ketonix and a newer one. I actually like the older one better. WHen they made the new one, you have to calibrate it to the right one. Unfortunately, the default settings are the wrong setting, they are for athletes. So, it wasn't reading like my old one, so I freaked out and thought it was defective. But you have to contact them and they will guide you through setting it up right.

    As far as hooking it up, you can use both models on ANY USB charger that is used to charge any cell phone. I think you can get one at a dollar store now. So, I check it when driving. (But you have to do it ~ not with the windows open).

    I stay under 20 total carbs almost every day at 5/20/75/1400 Kcal, but as a post menopausal women with insulin restistance, I am not sure the carbs are low enough. Some days I just feel like eating all day long and other days I feel fine. I have lost 32 pounds in 3.5 months, so that is great. So, I think I am going to buy it. I'll let you know how it goes.
