Day 7 back on track. One slip... limited to one meal. I'm over it and moving on. No movement on scale but that would be expected.
Some food/social challenges coming up this weekend... Going to let the good times overrule the food possibilities. Dancing, music, new pals... thin self. What could be better than that? Ice cream? Breadstuffs? I don't think so. This is my new life, ain't gonna let no carbage take it away from me!

Maggie, at its core, a Keto diet is no sugar, no grain, based in high (70-80%) fat, moderate protein and very low carb. Wraps, tortillas, taco shells, etc are not consistent with a Ketogenic way of eating. Some of the best advice I got was that if something says "Low Carb!" to stay away. Always look at ingredients. If it has any sort of grain, starch or sugar take a pass.

Good morning Knit, Thank for the advice I have another question and i'm sorry if I am over powering you guys with questions this is all so new to me. This week I gained back two lbs. could it be because I had taco's one night and then the wrap yesterday. I also have been getting in more calories now so i'm sure if that did it. Help?

@maggiegbrown Another thing to keep in mind is that the scale reflects what you ate and did two weeks ago, not two days ago. Aside from water retention, any upscaling is likely due to whatever you did 7-14 days prior. That being said, I've easily had 5+ pounds of water gain overnight from an indiscretion. Also, the body may have burned 4 pounds of fat but retained some water. You will have times you gain and times you lose, and even times you stay the same weight, but the inches, pictures, and clothing fits will change. It's essential to track all of these things.

The body will do what it does. As long as you are compliant to your plan, you have to just keeping the course. The body will hit different stages of adaption, and will hold in nutrients and fluids to repair muscles or damaged systems in the body. As long as you still feel good, trusting the process is CRITICAL. Good luck, and relax.

P.S. Nearly all of us have had some lose 4, gain 2, hold steady for 3, lose 2, etc., type of weeks!

Howdy friends. I've been faithfully following this WOE for 2.5 months now and I love it. I feel great. Over the past week or so I've been feeling hungrier though, and I'm not psyched about that. As a result I've been eating more, although nothing off plan. I normally try to stay around 1500 calories and <20 net carbs. I've kept my carbs in check, but have been eating around 2200 calories the past several days and it seems like I've gained a couple of pounds.

I do wonder if I'm having a "phantom period" LOL. I'm near the end of that part of my life, but every 6 or 8 months I'll have a cycle.

Anyhow, I know lots of people don't count calories and just eat to hunger. That's what I've done this week and the results are :(

    Anyone with a similar experience?

2.5 months is coming up on the 12 week period for adaption. It's likely your body has increased caloric needs to push further into ketogenic adaption. I found this to happen in stages - and it can go on, every 4-6 weeks even after the main thresholds.

    days 2-7
    day 14
    days 21 and/or 28
every two weeks or so until 12 weeks
every 4-6 weeks for the first 6 months
    etc.

Not necessarily JUST increased hunger, but macro changes, increased sodium needs, magnesium, other supplements, desire to exercise, better sleep, any manner of weird changes are PERFECTLY NORMAL on a KETOGENIC DIET. I know, I know...that covers basically anything. Just listen to your body, and if things seem out of whack or just OFF, and not in a GOOD way, then talk to your doctor, otherwise, grab your favorite fatty beverage of choice, pull up a chair, and sit down and enjoy a good talk session with the rest of us wacky Keto folks, @carsonheim - it appears you have ARRIVED to the best of the good stuff!!

Oh, and remember that calorie deficits should be looked at on a 7-14 day basis (averages) rather than daily. Our hunger changes based on everything from activity level to sleep quality to food reactions to moods to hormone levels to moon cycle to random @$$ wind blowing, or whatever. Our bodies are a complicated machine, and to force a calorie limit that is utterly inflexible makes no sense. A limit that is like the reed, strong enough to bend in the wind and stand straight in the sunshine? Now that makes PERFECT SENSE to me. Some folks need to count calories, some don't. Neither is WRONG...

Good luck as you continue on plan!

Fighting my way back to my standard keto plan has been sooo hard. Had to up calories to help myself avoid cravings/binges and even though it's helping with that, I saw another 2 1/2 lbs on the scale this morning. Of course. Arrgh. Time to remember the wisdom of patience, to trust in the long term success of this woe: it does work if you work it. And, to remind myself that I'm still below my original goal weight, I still feel and look better than I have in years, I'm still wearing my new cute clothes - so this is no time to beat myself up. (formerly my go-to, favorite passtime) So, that said...still not a happy camper, but I'll gladly take it and maybe tomorrow.....who knows?

Thanks Knit. Your comments helped me feel less frustrated. I'm up 1.5 lbs from 2 weeks ago... But will keep at it. I need to remember this ISN'T a linear process!!!

Currently resetting my keto plan with an egg fast/ IF plan that I worked up, which I think will work with my metabolism. All artificial sweetners are off the table for the duration. I'm hoping this will help get rid of the cravings that have gotten the best of me on and off for the last 3 months. So far so good. I've read that letting go of the sweeteners is helpful in reducing cravings. I hope it's true. For now, my goal is just to put together some significant time on a plan I can stick with comfortably until I feel stabilized back into my keto.
I feel like I can do this and grateful to notice that I don't give up. While I feel like I'm struggling - I'm no longer directing my energies at beating myself up, I'm directing them to finding strategies to make this WOE a lifestyle that will work for me long term. It's always changing, always challenging.

That is one thing I've found, I'm not stressing about what I eat. I know that I'll indulge in off-plan foods now and then but I feel like I've found the answer long term. I tweak things at times and continue to read and learn still after 18 months, yet I know that this works and it's something I can stick with for the rest of my life. (That isn't to say that I don't feel bad when I go seriously off-plan.)

Many times the hardest thing for me is watching friends and family deal with their health issues and not feeling that they are willing to try something that I *know* will help them so much. Somehow that makes it easier for me to stay on plan to, hopefully, help them see that there is something for them besides bad medical advice and pharmaceuticals. It certainly doesn't do any good to talk to them when they aren't ready to listen.

@Fvaisey SO much this last bit. My mother is a full-blown auto-immune diabetic, who reacts even to supplements and vitamins/nutrients (hives and such) now. If she would even try cutting back bread or anything small, I think she would see enough progress to keep notching it back. It absolutely breaks my heart, because she can't even walk a full block now without pain and stopping to catch her breath and such, you know? But we can't force anyone to do anything... She's been my motivation overall, that I don't want to follow her path through misery, but at the same token, I think I need to find a new perspective that helps this keep me on plan for longer patches, rather than "now and then" being far more frequent that it needs to be...

    Day 3: egg fast/IF
This has been surprisingly simple. Even handling no artificial sweetners in my coffee has worked out okay. Down a couple pounds, but more importantly, not feeling cravings or whack a doodle . Slight headache which I attribute to detoxing sugars and AS at the same time. Still...all good.
I feel like this may turn out to be a good tool in the toolbox for coming back after unplanned, extended off plan binges.
The plan is to stay on the egg fast til Friday afternoon when I will reintroduce my beloved keto plan - just in time for dance night.

Good for you! After day three I had lost a few lbs as well and found it wicked easy too. The funny thing for me is I was eating more on the egg fast then I do on keto. It was all so strange to me. God luck and keep going!

I did a two day egg fast earlier this week after I had been gaining one lb per week for no apparent reason. It helped and I dropped two pounds. I like doing the egg fast every once in a while. I do love my eggs, so I never see it as a struggle or as restrictive.

Still doing the egg fast til 5pm today. One blip on the scorecard, but all in all a good experience. Feel more secure about being able to really get a good streak going here. Looking ahead, not back. Trying to fill up my weekend with pleasurable, nicely- paced moments and activities. I spend alot of time alone, so weekends can be challenging emotion wise. So, I'm trying to address that this weekend, as I return to my regular, old keto plan. That's my plan for the next few days, starting off with dance night in 6 hours!!!

    Hi everyone
After trying and failing this year to lose weight and get fit I'm switching approach to low carb keto diet. I'd like some keto-dieting friends please.

I'm a bit scared as my blood fats are bad - I have genetic high blood fats. Known it since my 20s. In my 40s now and overweight just off obese. Keeping my weight in check and exercising regularly is really important with my blood picture. So I've been embarrassed and worried that I can't seem to do it. I've struggled to lose consistently even a tiny bit of weight.

Anyway I'm on day 3 of this new approach. I'd like some keto friends as I'm scared. I've an appointment at the lipid clinic at end of June about my blood fats. I'm worried what they will say about my diet. If I can't lose weight like this I will drop it but I think it may be the solution. I'm eating only 1200 a day that's usually impossible for me or triggers binges the following day. But I feel good just now. Still need to get my head round meal planning.

I'm wondering whether to be stricter on animal fat than average and use olive oil instead? Limit weekly intake of eggs and red meat? I'm also avoiding processed meat. Is there anyone here who does a high fat diet who has high cholestero?. I am expecting the statins conversation at the end of June and am terribly torn

Read "Cholesterol Clarity" by Jimmy Moore and Dr. Eric Westman. Having animal fats, red meat, eggs, etc. actually have very little effect on your blood cholesterol. What you don't eat, your body will make. Carbs are the main cause of cholesterol issues. Cholesterol itself is not bad. It's crucial for brain function. Read this book... I would not make olive oil my primary due to high Omega 6's making a huge imbalance of 3's to 6's and inflammatory responses, but you may not have the same issues I do... Mainly, the important parts are the triglyceride to HDL ratios... The rest is not as important once those are brought into balance.

That being said, conventional medicine is about 50-75 years behind the science supporting things, so you may have to educate yourself and then share that with your medical team...

    Hi everyone. Just checking in.

When I don't read the forums and check in, my food stuff is usually not going well. I wonder - do I not come and check in because it's not going well? Or is it not going well because I'm not checking in?? Its the chicken and the egg conundrum.

    Either way. Trying again.

@thebuffster40 - I'm a huge Buffy fan so love your profile pic! Is it from the comic...er...I mean "graphic novel" that they started after the series ended?

@jaymo602 - Good for you! Eating out is typically a problem for me because I feel like since I'm eating out I should "treat" myself.

Problem A: I eat out frequently so reality check - it's not a treat.
Problem B: How is eating something that contributes to a slow spiral into illness a treat? These are the questions I'm trying to ask myself.

Anyone have any diet tips they want to share? Cravings...getting back on track...etc...

Just don't suggest that I start working out regularly. ;)

JodiSW- I'm in the same boat, really rocking and reeling on and off my plan, feeling stumped by the magnitude of my eating issues. Every day, every meal is a chance to get going in the right direction again. I know from my history that if I keep trying, things will kick into place and I will have another chance to make keto my lifestyle for good. Always learning, sometimes succeeding!

I have a severe distrust of the nutritional data at resturaunts, as it just based on averages of a meal. I tend to prefer to cook at homme with higher more exspensive qualities of food to treat myself and familly.
Im also brand new to this diet so im more enthusiastic at this time..

@JodiSW - yes Im a huge fan of buffy. Pic is from the comics s8. The first 2 comic seasons weren't great tbh but season 10 I'm enjoying right now.
Hope you find your groove w keto again. I'm currently living it but haven't tackled eating out yet. I'm getting a buzz from cooking all kinds of new things to help w variety. Made chicken liver pate last night. Such a treat

Just checking in here. I'm really, really struggling with weight gain. I've gained about 15 lbs. I do admit to a few dietary indiscretions, but 15 lbs worth? I don't think so. Anyway, I'm going super-strict now for a while, just to see what happens. I'm going to try and stay away from nuts and almond butter. It's just too easy to overeat those, even though I do weight and measure.

Any thoughts, support would be appreciated.
@lodro- Hubs and I just got authentic kilts. Can't wait to wear them! You look awesome!
