Carbs bum me out

Twice I've noticed my mood dip and stay down after a sharp intake in carbs.

Once by being down right greedy having a big hit of starch from a take away pizza a few months ago. Then last week I went out drinking and dancing. The bar had no dry wine and no diet pop/soda! Being a bit tiddly I went ahead with the normal fizzy stuff and got a massive sugar hit. I was a moody lump for the next few days, in fact till I got back into keto.

Coincidence?

For ME it's not a coincidence. I've done extensive experimenting. I eat more carbs than most here, so it's not due to metabolic inflexibility. I get crabby with too much GRAINS, sometimes depressed. I also get weird aches and pains with grains, often in joints. I don't get the same with rice or potatoes. Weird. YMMV.

No coincidence. Gosh no. In a run out of time moment last week I ate a banana on gluten free toast.. 45 mins later I was falling asleep in a live theatre show I'd been taken to.

I get depressive with dairy or any kind of sugar or yeast
I get achy like flu or instant onset arthritis pain all over when I eat chocolate covered fruit- like figs or apricots
I get anxious if I eat much grain
    I bloat with all sorts
    etc etc etc.

I think it is fantastic that the food/psychology link is becoming more well known through many books including GAPS

After being at this for 20 months I can pop right back to ketosis if I do not over carb the next meal.

At 3pm I had two scoops of Culvers Lemon Ice that was 67 grams of carbs and 270 calories.

Classic Lemon Ice - 2 Scoop : Lemon Ice Base [Sugar, Corn Syrup, Water, Mono & Diglycerides, Locust Bean Gum, Guar Gum]; Water; Lemonade Base [Sugar Syrup, Water, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Concentrated Lemon Juice, Citric Acid, Citrus, Pulp, Tripotassium Citrate, Natural Flavors, Glycerol Ester Of Wood Rosin, Gum Arabic].

    culvers.com/menu-and-nutrition/lemon-ice/menu-item-details/lemon-ice-2-scoop#nutrition

At 7 pm I blew a 0.000 on my $15 alcohol breath analyzer and at 10:30 pm I blew 0.032 which means an OK level of nutritional ketosis. .03 to .06 is my normal range on that meter. Last week when I was not feeling well I was blowing a 0.091 and I checked my blood ketone level and it was at 3.2 on the Precision Xtra meter.

There was a time when I bounced out of ketosis getting back was hard.

I have been off dairy for a couple days now to test if that is what is leading to throat congestion that I have to clear each morning when I get up.

Good luck. We are all different, but for me, dairy, along with anything that causes even mild acid vapours, is one of the things that leads to throat, and sinus congestion. Always nice when you find what it is..

Nope :) But I've taken close notice since fall 2014 of what I ate and if any effects. Used a spreadsheet first, to get overview. Interestingly, someone in my friendslist commented on a possible link between grains and depression in February, when I posted about it. I can have grains as a single occasion at a party once in a while. But having pasta and pizza every day and I get very frail. I also have autoimmune issues, so I still monitor what I eat.

It's interesting to hear about others experiences too! ty for sharing :)

Now it is like my body is in control of what I eat without input from outside sources.

Wicked. Isn't that where we'd all like to be:)
And congrats on the dairy free. Some of the paleo authors say its not so much the milk, but how we've bastardised the milk over all these years in how we feed cows, pasteurise, homogenise etc.

Though for me, at this stage, and most of my life, fresh milk from a cow living in healthy non sprayed organic pastures - still creates phlegm, and odd bowel movements. So.. its not really a kindness.

You said something elsewhere about wishing you knew all thins at 25. I did know some of this, but somehow, loved the milk, more than I loved caring for myself, so maturity has changed that..

One of the things I like about low carb is there is never any "urgent" imperative to eat. If I run out of time, I just eat later. But then the vege crisper in my fridge is full of little tubs of cream cheese, salami, pate pods, cheese stix, all manner of things I can grab on the run.
