MCT Oil

Hi guys!
I started taking MCT oil a few days ago, and I like it so far. I've noticed a decrease in appetite, and I'm finding it easier to stop the mindless snacking that I've done for most of my life. On Sunday I will be boarding a flight to Virginia for 2 weeks. I'm not sure if I should take the MCT oil in my checked luggage, and if that would cause a problem with TSA.
Is it okay to quit taking it suddenly? Is it worth it to figure out how to pack it?

There wouldn't be any problem with not taking it suddenly. You'll probably notice you feel like you did before adding it, but it's just temporary.
I have no idea about traveling with food. I haven't been on a plane in many many years.0 -

Apparently they let you take some food in your carry on luggage - fresh fruits and things like that. I think the restrictions on checked luggage are much less. I'm taking a couple sugar free chocolate bars for when the campus bakery looks really, really tempting. I may just pack some of the MCT oil in a smaller bottle or something. I've really been liking a spoonful in my coffee.1 -
I like MCT oil in coffee too...would it be possible to pick up a bottle when you arrive at your destination?0

Theoretically yes. However, I'll be at the mercy of taxi fare and locating a health food store somewhat close to campus. I hear there's a Whole Foods nearby.0 -
I put Mct oil in a 100ml container in with my toiletries. I put them in clear plastic bag for carry on and if in hold as that also helps in case of spills. I also take a hand held milk frother which i use as a blender. Have a fun trip3

I think there is no problem with putting it into your checked bag. I'd maybe put the bottle in a ziplock bag incase of leaks. There are a lot of restrictions on bottles in your carry on but I think you could put it in an appropriated sized travel bottle.

Not sure where you will be in VA, but here in Richmond, it's easy to get ahold of.0 -
When I traveled I decided to avoid the hassle of packing things like that and just picked up a jar of coconut oil when I arrived. That said, I was staying with family, so it wasn't a problem to ask them to stop by the grocery store on the way in from the airport. Good suggestions above! Safe travels!0

Lynchburg! I'm headed to Liberty University.0 -
Thanks for the suggestions folks! I have many, many things to think about. I am literally getting a mattress and an otherwise empty room. We have to bring kitchen supplies, etc with us. SO much preparation and planning! I'm getting by with the bare minimum - one medium frying pan, a spatula, and a plastic bowl and plate. It's just a lot to check off, and this was one more item on my list to take care of.0

Liquid on flights is subject to restrictions. Might be better to mail it to yourself.0

No, it's not limited in checked bags. As another poster said, it would be best to place the bottle in a ziplock bag or perhaps put some in a smaller container that will last you throughout your trip. My MCT is in a very large bottle, and I've already begun thinking about this issue for a work trip I have to DC in early August.1

Thanks guys! Sounds like I have a plan0

Gotcha. My girlfriend lives at the halfway point between Richmond and Lynchburg (Farmville), but I'm not overly familiar with Lynchburg itself. It's a decent sized town for being in the middle of nowhere though, so I can't imagine you'll have too much trouble.0 -

I've only been twice, and didn't get much further than the distance from the hotel to the campus last time. This time I'll be staying on campus, and I'll have two free weekends to explore. I can probably get a cab after class on Monday and find somewhere to get some oil. I'll take a bit with me just in case.0 -
Here and when traveling to other good sized cities, I use Uber/Lyft, works nicely!1

@LINIA Uber is excellent!1

@Panda_Poptarts YES YES YES you can travel with it.
I have flown from the Netherlands to Malaysia and back with the 100ml container of MCT oil in my checked in luggage in a ziplock plastic bag in my toiletries so absolutely YES you can fly with it. That was what I tried to say in last post. I have even returned USA to Netherlands with a huge bottle of Dave Asprey's XCT oil and one of brain octane oil in my checked luggage.
I bought a nice dark glass olive oil container for the 100ml and I also have 2 x 50ml plastic containers that could be used for shampoo or other toiletries. The later I have flown to UK with in my carry on but if they get grumpy they could enquire about it in carry on toiletries in clear ziplock bag Can not see that being an issue unless we go back to just after 9-11 security levels.2 -

MCT oil is simply a short chain fatty acid supplement. It's not better or equal to coconut oil because it's entirely different than coconut oil. It's a concentration of the shortest chain fatty acids so I have no idea why this article was even comparing the two. They are not the same.
You can't say one is better than the other unless you know the reason for comparison.
If you want the most fast acting energy in the smallest consumed volume, go with MCT oil.
If you want the most complete fatty acid profile to get the benefits of all of the fatty acids and not specifically looking for the high short chain concentration, then go with coconut oil.
But the best plan, imo, would be to include both. Which is what I do.
MCT shouldn't be viewed as a substitute for coconut oil but rather a supplement.0 -

I like it! Thanks so much
I'm also taking like 5 bottles of MIO haha!0 -

Coconut oil is absolutely more "complete" than MCT oil. However, the quantity you'd have to consume to get the same MCTs is rather extreme. While I don't use coconut oil as much as I should, I do cook with it regularly, so I am consuming both. When I really feel frisky, I put both in my coffee
Since supplementing with MCT oil in addition to coconut oil, I have noticed a significant increase in mental clarity, I am more productive at work, I have less appetite (great for me as a grazer!), and I am peeing more (indicating I'm likely getting into and staying in ketosis easier).
I definitely don't think one is better or more important than the other, but if one can have both... why not?2 -
Thanks for this - I take coconut oil 3-5 times a day and forgot I'm away on vacation next week. duh!1
-
@Bob314159 I hope you have an excellent vacation!1
-
@Bob314159 - As far as coconut oil, a good thing is that some stores, like Trader Joe's for one, actually carry coconut oil in single serve 1 oz packets (1 Tbsp or 1 oz, I forget). So for the carry on, you should be able to have something on hand for emergencies - or until you can find it at a store or whatever, so wanted to share that part for you in case it's something you want to look into...as a stop gap/emergency back up plan.
@Panda_Poptarts - I also know there are better options available, but the Carrington Farms "liquid coconut oil" carried at Walmart is actually an MCT incognito. Or you could order from Amazon to be delivered to your arrival location, etc., before or once you're there - or delivered to whomever's home who is picking you up from the airport. I didn't remember seeing those things mentioned above.0 -
@KnitOrMiss Chuckles from me over here at your description of a coconut oil shortage as an "emergency". Isn't it funny just HOW important our favorite fats have become?!
Unfortunately I'll be on campus and doing the taxi thing, and I'm not even sure what room I'll be in. My only specifier is "East Campus" which is a massive dorm unit, so who knows? I've packed a couple of those travel bottles with MCT oil - 200mL total, which is plenty for 2 weeks. I just put plastic wrap under the cap, then capped them, then double zippy bagged them. I think I'll be alright2 -
@Panda_Poptarts - If you can get to the closest post office, you can have it sent to Postmaster General at that location, to your attention, to go pick it up... Just saying. Should you have an emergency - and run out. And yeah, any pre-planning for me is an emergency if someone else's mistake inconveniences me. Planning is my anxiety reducer.1
