This thread is for GOADies who like to run. New runners, old runners, and even wannabe runners meet here to discuss the joys and challenges of running. Use this space to log your miles, ask questions, share your race reports, or for anything else related to running.

New runners - and even those just thinking about starting out - are always welcome. There's no reason to lurk here. Join the pack and tell us about your running!

Oftentimes the GotR thread will pose a question or raise an issue in order to facilitate the conversation, but this is always an open forum to chat about any running-related topic.

QotD: how does your current training rate: gold, silver, bronze, participation medal, booby prize, or DQ?

Alt: your weekend running plans. Any fun races or epic long runs on the calendar?

Check it out: we can say booby on the MFP boards! Pretty sure WW's filth filter wouldn't have allowed. ;-)

I'm off to Duluth and points north in a few hour. Taking my middle child DS-2 to begin his freshman year at UMD. Dang. Excited for him and apprehensive too. Much different feel than when his brother began college two years ago.

Missed a scheduled run last evening because I started getting weird knee pain late in the day yesterday. I attribute the discomfort to after effects of lunges and squats on Wednesday. It feels ok now, so I'm going to do an abbreviated easy run before our trip. Saturday, if the weather permits, will be an awesome day of paddling in the Boundary Waters with DW. I'll be back home Sunday and will do a 6-7 mile run then.

I'll probably add more thoughts later, but for the QotD my quick answer is "participation medal." I'm training (and tracking), but not for much effect. If that makes sense.

Have a great Friday and a terrific weekend, all!

AOTD: I'm in a much better place with my training this summer as compared to the same time last year. Last year I got a late start on my marathon training due to an injured hamstring. I suffered greatly in the summer heat when I resumed my running. This year I feel I've adapted to the heat & humidity. I don't like running in it, but it also isn't making me heat sick. I am looking forward to cooler fall temperatures. I'd say a bronze medal as I have been consistent, but haven't been able to really start ramping up the miles until just recently due to my eye procedures.

I did get in 16.2 miles yesterday. Got a late start due to a storm that rolled through early in the morning so I was finishing up in the full sun after 11:00am. It was humid from the rain and in the low 80's. Feels like 7 inches from the sun :-( But I finished and even ran the second half a bit faster than the first - probably the thought of an air conditioned car was motivation to pick up the pace! Silver medal for that run as I did take 2 short breaks to bring down my core temp by dunking my head in the water pumps at the trail heads.

As for the weekend runs, the plan is 10 miles with a friend tomorrow and then I have a 10K on Sunday.

Calvin - enjoy your trip up north! The paddling in the Boundary Waters sounds awesome!

QotD: Is there a mooby prize? I may qualify for that. My training mantra is "Run. Lift. Bike. Repeat." and I have been consistent with that so far!! Of course I only started that a week ago, but I'm feeling motivated.

Alt: I'm pining for just a 6 mile long run in some fall weather, but it's not here yet, and I'm not there yet. I'm planning on 2, maybe 3 tomorrow morning. Lifted last night, and going for a bike ride after work today.

QotD: Trying to finish up the week strong with a bronze. Last week would have only been a participation medal at best. Less than that if we are only counting actual times running. Heading to S. Carolina next week for work. There is a nice park with a mostly decent mile long asphalt track. Depending on the weather and the work schedule, getting out there may not be achievable more than 1 or 2x and the heat/humidity will also be a factor.

Alt: w2d2 and d3 on tap for tonight and Sunday. Both probably at the indoor track at the gym due to the humidity and bugs. No 5K races until at least the end of October or possibly to the initial goal of just doing one on Thanksgiving. Still unsure at this point of where I will be for that holiday.

Heading to S. Carolina next week for work.

Nearly 2.5 mi last night on the indoor track while completing w2d2 of c25k. Not convinced the gps is accurate. Will try and do w2d3 tomorrow outdoors before the heat/humidity get cranked up.

Good Morning! Beautiful morning for a run! Got down into the upper 50s last night. It was a brutal and ugly run, but I ran 4 miles today for the first time since 2/2014. That's 2.5 years. Wow, but I let myself go. I'm on my way back, and I intend to keep running now. I still want to run a marathon some day. I'm happy with what I got accomplished today, and I have lost almost 6 pounds in 6 weeks, so I give myself a bronze for that!

10K race this morning. It is cooler here for a change. I kept a nice, consistent pace, but faster than my usual training pace, until the last mile when I picked it up and reeled in some people who were fading. Not anywhere close to a personal best, but also not a personal worst - I set the bar low in this race in 2015 when a shin pain caused by a defective shoe had me walking after mile 2. I'm feeling good about my performance today, especially since I ran/walk 11.6 miles yesterday. There were NO walk breaks today. I just felt good the entire time although the last mile felt harder since I was pushing the pace.

Way to go, Steve and Regina!

I ran a 4 mile hilly loop this AM. Feeling good, but tired. Our canoe adventure on Saturday was glorious, but made for a long day. Happy to get out and get moving this AM.

Three cheers for Galen Rupp in the marathon this morning! Selfishly, I'd like to see him leave the track and concentrate on the marathon going forward.

USA track and field was very impressive overall. Winning the 1500 (Matt Centrowitz) and second in the 5000 (Chelimo) were unexpected and huge accomplishments. I'm sorry that Olympic track and field had to end! Best week of every four years.

Still have w2d3 on tap for today on the indoor track. Just not sure if it will be later this afternoon or tonight.

WTG Steve, Regina, and Brian for getting out there and lapping everyone on the couch!

Thanks, Joe. Enjoy your w2d3! The indoor track is a nice option. There a lots of times I wish I had one available.

WTG to all of us who got off the couch and did something to move!! Although after all my activity this past week, including the most running miles that I've had in a very long time, the couch (or bed in my case) is calling my name.

Ended up running outside last night in 79 degree heat and 62% humidity. The weather felt fine until I got into the run. Legs were probably also ready for a day off. Will not be running outside this week in South Carolina.

I'm helping DS-1 move this evening, so probably no time left for a workout (even though it's a pretty low key move).

Tentatively, I'll run Tues and Thurs this week, lift on Weds and Sat.

I'm looking forward this week to the Milk Run 5K on Sunday at the MN State Fair. This will be the 3rd or 4th time I've raced there. Always a good time. It's an interesting course that goes gently uphill for the first 2/3rds and then (relatively) plunges back down to the start/finish area over the last mile. Most of the course is not actually on the fair grounds, but the start and finish definitely are. A pretty young dairy princess hands you a chocolate milk at the finish. Lol. It's all so very Minnesotan.
