How long does it take to get into ketosis?

I have cut out carbs and sugar for a month now and don't notice a difference yet. My clothes still feel the same and I haven't lost any inches off of my waist, but it does appear that I am losing weight in my legs and face.is it possible that I am not in ketosis yet?

You're losing weight. Just not in places that make a difference in clothes. You're doing well.
It has nothing to do with being in ketosis.
Is your hunger under control? A steady energy rather than a huge high followed by a huge crash? Those are better signs of ketosis than weight loss.1 -
Technically, a person can be in ketosis by the end of day 1. It depends on how low the carbs are and how quickly they use up their excess glycogen.
Getting into ketosis isn't going to speed up fat loss though. Not for that reason alone anyway. It helps people achieve the kind of hunger control where they can feel satisfied with less food, less often and don't feel the need to snack between meals and don't have sugar cravings and such things that make being consistent long term difficult. So, it could get you to that place which could help with losing fat, but it's still not about it going faster, it's about it being sustainable.
Couldn't even begin to give an opinion about whether or not you've achieved a full time state of ketosis without knowing how many carbs you eat and if you have any of the mental and above mentioned effects
Also, it seems that you have noticed a difference. Just not really counting it since it's not where you prefer to see it.Christianrossall wrote: »I have cut out carbs and sugar for a month now and don't notice a difference yet. The local drug stores sell ketostrips, that can tell you if your body is expelling ketones. If your in Ketosis, the test strip will change color, the more ketones the darker the strip...0

While they can do that, it can also show a light colour if you test later in the day and have drank a lot of water.
It basically tells you how much you're excreting.
It's not a reliable indicator.

Yep, sourpusses in these parts (like me) would say that really dark pee-stix mean you're dehydrated, since the nice burgundy color will fade fairly quickly if you do nothing more than power chug a couple glasses of water.... However, the blood and breath ketone tests appear to be pretty solid.0 -

But there is still color. If you have not started into Ketosis, if I understand correctly, you would not be expelling ketones. It's my opinion, but I like to know I'm at least on track to were I should be, not having any indication if what I'm doing is right or wrong is worse than having only a light color. I will also say that, on the days that I did eat high carbs, I bumped myself out of Ketosis, and there was no color and it took me a couple days to get back into it. So as with almost everything, works better for some, than others.1 -

Can't argue with that. They're cheap, too!
FYI, if you haven't yet stumbled across the wonderful LCD Launch Pad, I'd highly encourage you to skim through it next time you're stuck on a conference call (or on the porcelain throne, stuck in traffic, waiting for the plumber, etc). Here ya go:

One unfortunate aspect of MFP is that the search function just doesn't work very well. Since everyone knows that, there's no downside to asking any old question you might have - some nice soul here will give you a thoughtful answer.
PS Just don't eat high carbs?

"fat-adapted vs ketosis" I think.

Most people will go into ketosis every night after not eating for length while asleep. So it's possible to get a reading then too. The strips are mostly reassurance for the beginning they offer little value but can be encouraging when just starting out. The way your body works though if you are consuming less carbs than your body needs daily you will start burning fat creating ketones. Your brain needs 120 g a day just for itself so if you are below that daily your in ketosis. Now say you eat one meal of 50g carbs you'll stop burning fat for a short time and burn those carbs but then go right back to it.1 -
@auntstephie321 - Along those lines, Phinney pointed out he can burn off a minor excursion into Carbland with a brisk bike ride.1
