New to Keto... Fat adapted yet?

Hi all,

I am 3.5 weeks into Keto. I have been strict about staying under 20 carbs a day and have lost 6 lbs so far (2lbs down since yesterday) I have been using Keto strips that have shown purple for about 3 weeks until yesterday they showed barely a trace. But then, boom, this morning I lost 2 lbs. (first loss in a week) Could this mean I am becoming fat adapted?

Also I added "Keto aid" and lite salt to my diet to help with dehydration, but feel more bloated since starting, could this be making me retain water?

Shannon

You may be becoming fat adapted. It can take weeks to months from what I have read. I don't know if ketostix reflect fat adaption or not. I think some people just spill fewer ketones.

I'm one of those too. Ketostix do not register much for me either.

And welcome to the group! :) Sounds like you are doing really well so far.

Great progress! I read that when keto strips get lighter, you are becoming fat adapted.(Keto Clarity by Jimmy Moore). Great for you. My strips are still deep purple, but I'm only a week into my keto diet. I was doing more of a paleo before.

IMO, symptoms like feeling less hunger, forgetting to eat, feeling more energy and drive to do things is a better measure of keto adaptation. Oh, and mental clarity!

Too much simple starches make me feel lethargic, depressed and have lots of vague pains and feverish. YMMV.

To answer your question about weight loss and adaptation. You can be both in ketosis and keto adapted and NOT lose weight. They're not required for fat loss. A caloric deficit (a number your body perceives as a deficit, not what some Internet calculator say) leads to the hormonal pathways needed for lipolysis which is burning fat from stored fat, not just burning easy available energy in the bloodstream.

Congrats on your success so far!

Ketosis happens pretty quickly with this woe.

Fat adaptation can take several weeks for some of us. The decrease in color on the strips can be based on your hydration status too. If you have consumed extra water/fluids before that test it dilutes the test sometimes. I'm not sure of any true measure of adaptation. It just happens with sticking to this woe. I can say that it is soooo worth hanging on, and keeping your macros in check, however long it takes!

Welcome to the group! I look forward to watching your progress!

Thank you all for the encouragement!

I am feeling much less hunger and my waist is feeling slimmer. My goal is to lose about 20 more lbs.

Yep. A sure-fire way to get deep maroon on the pee-stix is to fast for a full day, stay in a warm environment, and don't drink a drop of any liquid. (You'll feel rotten of course, but you'll have nice colors!)
