Hi all, I am Sarah. I'm a former chef who left the restaurant in July due to overwhelming stress, burnout, exhaustion & anxiety. I was just diagnosed with T2 diabetes yesterday. I have been changing my lifestyle ever since I left the kitchen, but this is a wake up call for me to lose some serious weight (60#), get stress & anxiety under control and exercise. Hopefully this app will help keep me motivated.
I am sad & ashamed that I let my self down and my poor lifestyle contributed to my diabetes. I am aiming to turn it around by the end of 2016. I don't know if that is realistic, but it's what I want to do.

Hi All I've been T2 for almost 5 years now. I'm trying to recommit to doing what I need to do keep my T2 under control better & losing about 35 more pound. I control my T2 by diet & exercise only. I've never been on any medication for my T2D. I'm not very good about logging my food, but I do ok at logging blood sugars exercise. I really need some help. Thank you a head a time.0

Hi. My name is Doug, I live in the UK and I've been Type 2 Diabetic for 3 years. I work shifts which include nights and struggle to find good quick meals for shift workers, not to mention snacks. I also like beer and chocolate and would love someone to come up with ideas as to which chocolate is less damaging to my blood sugars and a low carb beer....
My sugar levels are on the whole steady, but possibly a bit high. But this should improve as I've just started swimming again and swim about 2000m a week, for now.0 -
Hey guys, so I'm not necessarily new to MFP (I joined about 3 yrs back, stopped using the site 'til Feb this year, installed the app) but I'm back because I've had to get serious about my health and weight loss. I was diagnosed with type2 diabetes late January this year, and ever since the diagnosis I've been very determined to lose the weight and to get my health in check. ☺ So far through calorie-counting on MFP and through exercising (joined a gym, and have PT sessions twice per week + attend on other days on a regular basis) I've lost almost 10kgs in 2 months.
Recently an endocrinologist put me onto a VLCD for a few weeks (he said it's to help get the diabetes into remission) but it will be helpful to see other diabetics' eating plans for when I transition back to regular food. Feel free to add me0 -
Hi everyone, I'm not new to MFP ,,I was diagnosed with type 2 a year ago. I've managed to lose 40 pounds and get off one med...but since getting off the one I've had to be very careful with counting carbs. My goal is to lose more and get off the other med.0

Hi all, I was diagnosed with diabetes type 2 since 2008, and took around 5 medications, until i decided to stop the medication and relay on food, but it didn't work out well, as my blood sugar was reaching 600, now i'm controlling it for the past year with daily sport and nutrition. please check my logs and add me as a friend for motivation.
doing bodybuilding now, struggling to lower my fat % below 9 diabetes is playing a role here but i dropped from 21% to 9 in one year and i've never been better
logging almost every meal on MFP. thank you for your support.1 -
Hi I was diagnosed with T2 last year and basically ignored it for several months, which obviously didn't help. So now I am trying to get my numbers under control and so far not doing too well. I'm trying to relearn what to eat and watching carbs. I recently started going to the gym too and am hoping to maybe lose enough that I can no longer be a diabetic. Trying to figure this out and finding that there is a science to it. Many trials and errors so far. I will be starting on Metformin as soon as my mail order meds arrive and hoping that helps. Looking for motivation, advice etc. Thanks ☺0

Hi All,
My name is David and I have been diagnosis with Diabetes. In fact, it's so recently that I haven't discussed the lab results with my doctor or consulted with the International Diabetes Center (for nutritional consulting), past my doctor stating I have Diabetes, recommended nutritional counseling, and prescribing me Metformin. I'm on the first week of the medication and am setting up an appointment with the IDC.
I've been using MFP for years, off and on throughout the time. I have liked using it for my efforts to loose weight and it's been the most successful for me then anything else. But I still fall off the routine when I hit a very long plateau in weight loss.
Now I am using the incentive of this Diagnosis to start again and help me maintain healthly eating habits and means of tracking what I ingest. My hope was that I could find another App that could sync with MFP to help with tracking other aspects of this disease. Like taking the Carb info from MFP and put it into another App that I put my Glucose results, to give me a overall view of health. If any of you have ideas, I would greatly appreciate it.
Also I am so NEW at this that it may not be necessary to be that anal on keeping records and monitoring them. But I would love your input on this. Realize that I haven't even gotten a testing unit or know anything about them. Or what I'm going to be needing to deal with through the rest of my life dealing with this disease.
I've researched what is a normal Carb intake for a larger man, like myself. And what I find is a recommended amount of 250-450mg of Carbs per day. My Carbs setting in MFP has set it to 381mg. Does that seem like a reasonable amount? Or is this something that the IDC consultant with help me determine?
Any ideas will help me greatly. Thank you
Sincerely,
David S. Novak0 -
Hi! I'm Melanie, I'm a T2 diabetic, diagnosed 11 years ago. I managed it well for 5 years on Actos, but when my medication received a black box warning by the FDA, my doc would no longer prescribe it and my insurance company wouldn't pay for it. I was switched to Metformin, which made me very ill, much worse than the normal upset tummy people get, so I was put on insulin, a long lasting and fast acting.
Fast forward 5 years, I gained a ton of weight and really struggled to lose any weight without major calorie restriction, to the point where it just wasn't sustainable. I was up to 310 units of insulin a day and was very depressed. Last December after significant research, I decided to try a low carb, moderate protein, high fat diet. I've lost 59 lbs and dropped my insulin down from 310 units a day to just 10-20 units a day.
I still have a very long way to go on my weight loss journey, and I'm just taking it one day at a time, but for the first time in years I feel really positive about my health.2 -
Hello my name is Josh. I been taking metformin for my type 2 diabetes for a few years. I have lost 36 pounds since January 2016. Will see my medical doctor on May 9th to compare my new blood work with last years blood work. I will be happy if my A1C has gone down.2

Hi, I'm new to T2 and this group. I just started using MyFitnessPal "for real" today, but I guess I signed on originally in 2011. I'm sure this group will be helpful for me, and I'm hopeful I can help someone else, too.

I am a returning MFP member. I've not been good at handling my T2 diabetes and want to begin again fresh. I am now testing 3 times a day and realizing that my choices have not been as good as I thought. I'm looking for support and suggestions.1

Hi, my name is Frank. I'm 38 and was diagnosed with T2 last week... I'm not shocked, since I have been living in denial for a while. Up until this year, I had not had insurance for a while. But I finally bit the bullet and went to the doc to confirm what I already knew to be true.
Based on the initial testing, I am not required to be on insulin, which I am relieved by. I was prescribed Metformin & Lisinopril, but had an allergic reaction to the Lisinopril (angioedema) and spent the weekend in the hospital... Awesome... So, I'm sure meds will change.
I have been on MFP for a while... Several years ago, I lost 70 pounds doing P90X and counting calories. It was great and MFP was a huge part of my success. Today, P90X is just too hard on my joints and too demanding a regimen to sustain.
The plan, as of now, is to drop the carbs substantially, count the calories religiously, and start low impact exercise immediately. I'm going to be doing DDP Yoga and swimming in our neighborhood pool.
My first long-term goal is to stay off of insulin. The second would be to get off of meds. The third would be to stay off of meds. This is all brand new to me, though, so I value encouragement and helpful tips.
I'm working through a bunch of emotions about the whole thing, but the bottom line is that I have a wife of 10 years and three kids (8, 6, and 2) who need me and whose lives I want to share a lot more of. There is really not anything else to say, but let's get started. Cheers!3 -
Hi Frank!! If you can stay motivated and embrace your journey I am sure you will do well! Sounds like a bit of a rough start!
Swimming is an absolutely fabulous way of getting fit! I swim and swear it's made all the difference in my fitness along with walking. It's easy on the joints too. By the next checkup you can improve!! Believe it!!!
Try to see a dietician if you can!! They can help immensely based on what sort of diet you want to follow and there is a low carb/high fat group here too that is popular.
I just ate balanced with lower carbs whilst losing weight.
I would try and eat many more green and leafy veggies and less of the corn/peas/potatoes type of diet though they are ok now and then. Fish, lean meat, poultry all good and keep the 80/20 rule so you don't get off and binge which can happen.
Any questions there are a host of people
Who can answer and try to help!! Best wishes on your journey to better health!! It can happen!! believe!!!3 -
Hello, all. I was diagnosed two decades ago, but at the same time, I was diagnosed with another illness that was, according to my doctors, supposed to kill me by the end of 2011. Well, guess what . . . .
So with those two diagnoses, I decided not to deal with the diabetes. I recently changed my mind.
I have been using insulin for a week now, and I know a little more than at the start, but I am still floundering. Thought I could learn more here.0 -
Hi I'm Sheila I'm a Type 2 for 10 yrs no meds my dietician recommended myfitnesspal so here I am0

Hi, I'm LA...new to the group. I'm "pre-diabetic" and have been for over a year. I was recently diagnosed with a benign pancreatic tumor and am preparing for surgery. My doctor told me when they remove the tumor they are taking part of the pancreas with it. As a result, I will likely have type 2 diabetes and be placed on insulin, since I will not have a fully functioning pancreas. I need to lose 50-60 pounds to try and get this under control.

I hope everything works out super-well, @la24lomax. Kepp us up-to-date, okay?0

Hello, I'm Kim., and I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last week. I had gestational diabetes two years ago, but that went away. I never thought I would develop full blown diabetes. No one in my family is diabetic, except I had a maternal great grandmother. I'm on metformin x2 a day. I'm finding it hard to figure out if I am eating the right amount for carbs. I can definitely tell when I'm low! Waiting on my doctor to send in the script for the BG monitor.0
-
Hi Jessica and Kim!
Welcome!
I was diagnosed April 2015 and probably like you was completely overwhelmed but don't be too scared. You just need to get fit, eat right and if you need to..lose some weight.
One of the most comforting things the doctor said to me when I was diagnosed and crying in the examining room was that everyone needs to do this...diabetic or not. Good choices that everyone needs to embrace...so remember that and it will help. Also the type 2 support group has lots of great and helpful people!!!
To start I would say walk every day or do some sort of exercise. Don't start extreme because you need to make this a lifestyle change I have lost 76 lbs (I play with w 5 lb range) and am on maintenance but all I did was walk (and not fast) every day for the fist 9 months of the year it took me to lose the weight. I now do lots of different things but with evrryone going on, walking is a great one till you settle in and get a bit fitter!!
Also the second thing I would suggest is trying to drink at least 8 cups of water every single day. We need to protect and not stress out our kidneys!!
To start with your diet, there are lots of ways to help keep your blood sugar more stable bit above all, I would go by the advice of your doctor..here is what Is working for me...lots of people here follow this sort of diet..it is moderate carbs and balanced diet and other follow a low carb, high fat with success but for me it wouldn't be sustainable. Follow your medical advice and listen to your body(important)
Eating as much real food (less processed) as you can do at least you know what you are eating this is a big one for me!
Eating more veggies..(non starchy ones) make then the focus of your meal!!
Lean meat, chicken, turkey, fish...
Carbs..when I started I would keep my total carbs PER MEAL at around 30-35 which is lower...that included fruit, veggies, dairy...all sources of carbs but you can play around with that..the diabetic associations recommend around 40-45 carbs per meal which was too high for me when I was starting..would send my blood sugar to the moon 2 hours after eating so I cut it down until I saw some sort of normal readings.. Spread your carbs out with your meals if you can..there will always be exceptions! Keeps the blood sugar more stable.
Now that I exercise lots more..running, swimming, extreme exercise classes at the gym I can eat around 40-50 carbs per meal without too much bother. I eat my carbs always with fat and/or protein and fiber to temper the blood sugar post meal.
I have always kept the 80/20 rule and that meant birthdays, holidays etc I could and do celebrate with cake etc but not with wild abandon lol! Get right back to healthy and you may boy believe this but the longer you eat healthy..the less you will crave the junk.
Eat enough..don't starve yourself.
It sounds overwhelming but it's not as bad as what you think when you were diagnosed...everyone will cheer you and support!!!
You will likely find you will be in the best shape and feeling so great once you get into the groove. It's a journey and a learning process...take it day by day..this meal, this walk, this decision. Its easier that way!!!!
Lots of us feel better than we have in ever!!!
It's normal to feel bummed, mad, cheated and why me...the stigma of type 2 as well but believe me you will feel like a champion!!! Everyone needs a project...this is a big one for us. YOU CAN DO THIS!! I repeated that every single day and still do..more to do with exercise now tho haha!
Hope that helps you!!!! Welcome aboard!!!!!3 -
Hello,
My name is Edward and I was just diagnosed with T2 Diabetes this morning. Though I have known for about a month now (they checked my fasting sugar in order to do the final test and it was higher than it should be), just had conflicting schedules with the Dr until today. I've been put on Metformin and took my first starting dose as soon as I got it.
I've used myfitnesspal for a few years now, but I always run into trouble when I eat something without a label.
I'm hoping to lose weight so I can get off the meds, of course I've been trying to lose weight for years now, I guess this is more motivation now. I'm being referred to the diabetic help center, so I guess I'll wait for their call to learn more.
For the most part I don't really feel bad about the diagnosis, getting in shape is something that I really need to do. I also have high blood pressure and anxiety, getting in shape should help with those as well.
I came back to this site to start tracking my food again and hopefully be able to ask questions as they come up.1 -
Welcome Edward!! Sounds like you have a great attitude!! One thing that helped me was the doctor told me...the way we eat and exercise for diabetes is the way everyone should eat and exercise!!!!You are definitely not alone!!!1

Hi! My name is Donielle. I'm 46 now and have, for just about 3 yrs now, type 2 Diabetes. I had gestational diabetes when pg with my eldest son who is now 23 . I had been at a weight of 249 when I found out I was T2 and lost 49 lbs in 4/5 months out of sheer terror.
I am now up 15 lbs. due to stress and temptations of treats and pot lucks at work, as well as the Fibromyalgia medicine I am now on (Lyrica). If there is anyone who would like to add me as a friend, I'd gladly accept it. I would love to chat with persons walking down a similar path as me!0 -
I was recently diagnosed with diabetes. I had gestational diabetes when i was pregnant with my girls so it wasn't completely a surprise but still really disappointed! On medication now but hoping to get to a point where it's manageable with diet and exercise. Also hope to lose another 20 lb or so.0

Hi, my name is Leah, and I've had diabetes just over a year now. I take 500 mg extended-release Metformin (Glumetza) once a day. My latest a1c was 5.6%, but I'm always trying to get it lower I've been trying to lose weight since my diagnosis and going low carb (< 100 g carbs/day) and am around 25 lbs away from my goal weight, though I seem to have stalled.
I'm greatly curious as to the eating habits of other diabetics, so feel free to add me!1 -

Hi, I am Brenda, and the doc has not yet diagnosed me with type II YET, but I just logged into my blood test results from Friday, and I am definitely in that group! Will see her this week then!
I am used to using MFP, lost big, and then gained much of it back,
and have struggled to stay on plan. The plan I am using has been equal parts carb and protein, and lower in fat - 25%- but I see I am going to have to up the carbs! My issue is that I am allergic to grains, not celiac, just grains, except no reaction to brown rice. So I eat it for breakfast and lunch, not usually at dinner.
What the Am and CAN Diabetes Assoc are giving me are not clear guidelines, like exactly how much protein/carb/and fat per day. What GRAMS, or Cups or OZ? How often? There are a lot of carbs on their sites! and a lot of fruit with the carbs?
Any and all advice and direction is welcome! do you eat small meals, or snacks, or
Hope you are all in a healthy place today!

I am so happy that I found this group! I am actually crying right now after reading the stories.
I am 52 years old and have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes for about 13 years. I am new to MFP (this is only my 7th day). I have tried so many medicines and even some long acting and short acting insulin. I really don't think I would need medicine at all if I could control my emotional eating. I have joined the emotional eating group, also.
I am a recent widow that is looking at living on a fixed income, so the cost of meds and healthy foods is really a concern for me at this time and I need to get healthier so my health care will not be such a financial burden. And the grief associated with the loss of my husband and beginning a new stage of life is not helping me very much.
I am just happy to be able to find a place where perhaps I can encourage others in their struggles, and I can be encouraged.
Thank you so much!

My name is Jim, 50, married, was diagnosed with type2 diabetes in January 2004, managed it, poorly with diet until February 2013, when i started with metformin 1000mg once a day. In August 2014 my a1c was 6.8 so my metformin was upped to 1000 twice a day. January 2016 a1c 7.9, so we added 25mg januvia to the mix. In June 2016 a1c was back down to 7.0. Over the past decade my weight has yo-yo'd between 560lbs (254kg) and 515lbs (233.6kg). In 2004, i was at my heaviest, 593lbs (269kg).
Finally, this August first, i decided to start eating better and doing something about my health, i was at 529.6lbs (240.23kgs). I want to see at least the first two grandbabies make it to 21 (they were born in May and July).
Other than arthritis in my knees, hips, back and shoulders, the weight, diabetes and some neuropathy in my hands and feet i am healthy, no heart, lung or circulatory issues.
This morning, my fasting blood glucose level was 118, with a 2 week average of 124, and my weight was down to 494.2lbs (224.17kgs)... nearly 100lbs off my highest weight and the least i have weighted since the late 1990's.
I have my daily calorie goal set at 2750, since i started here, two weeks ago, i have on average consumed 2643 calories a day, and i do not eat back any of my exercise calories. i used a different website on and off for the past 3 years until it stopped updating reports and the diary.
On august first i could only stand to walk 0.1miles before the joint pain and shortness of breath made me stop. Last week i was up to a mile which took me 45 minutes to walk, this morning it took me 35 minutes for the same mile, the first quarter mile is up a hill that has an average slope of 21.2%. for me this is a very good day. The pain is less but i can breathe a lot easier on the walk.
