This thread is for GOADies who like to run. New runners, old runners, and even wannabe runners meet here to discuss the joys and challenges of running. Use this space to log your miles, ask questions, share your race reports, or for anything else related to running.
New runners - and even those just thinking about starting out - are always welcome. There's no reason to lurk here. Join the pack and tell us about your running!
Oftentimes the GotR thread will pose a question or raise an issue in order to facilitate the conversation, but this is always an open forum to chat about any running-related topic.
QotD: pet peeves of running. Besides the mosquitoes, what's bugging you?
Alt: your weekend running. What's the plan? Anyone racing? Any fun weekend long runs?

My all time (least) fave: drivers who don't slow down or budge an inch when I'm running on the road. I hate this so much that I will often drive to a trailhead to avoid running in traffic even for very short runs.0
-
People who come to a dead stop in the middle of a narrow trail. This happened during last Sunday's 20 miler. Apparently he just couldn't wait to check his phone. And apparently he was also deaf as I'm not light on my feet and was breathing heavy.
Bicyclists who don't warn me they are sneaking up behind me. I'm happy to move over, just make your presence known. I don't wear headphones. I usually can hear their tires on the crushed limestone paths but not on asphalt.
Runners who have their music so loud that they don't hear me announce "on your left" when I'm trying to pass them while cycling.0 -
As for weekend plans, I have a 1/2 marathon on Sunday. Last long run before the trail marathon next Saturday.0

I'm planning on getting a short run in tomorrow morning to kick off the new training plan. After that driving down to Nashville to see a band I like!1

QotD: On the indoor track, people who walk 2-3 wide and do not seem to think you want to keep your pace and pass them.
Other runner/walkers who know you pass going the opp direction and don't greet. I feel we all need to be in this together. This kitten is too hard to do on your own.
AQotD: w3d3 already done this AM at a local park as part of a total 5K run/walk. No race involved, just realized I had the time while DW was at her workout.0 -

I live in Franklin, TN now. If you are ever down in Nashville some other weekend, let me know.0 -
Good Morning!
Ran 3 on the TM last night. Felt great. Only walked to slow my HR twice in that time period, and ticked the speed up a little on the last 1/2 mile.
I am noticing, however, that my left calf is wanting to cramp. My shoes only have 50 miles on them. I had this very problem in 2014, and could in part, be at least a little of the reason I quit running. I have compression sleeves, and will wear one today, and see if that helps. I'd like to think that if it is going to get down to 53 tonight that I would want to run 5 miles tomorrow. I've run 10.1 miles in the last week. Woot! I know, I hear "over use". Perhaps.

Well, it's Sunday AM and I'm in the same spot I was Friday AM . . . sitting at the computer playing around when I could just as well be running! I'll get moving in a little while. It's a beautiful morning here and I promise not to let it slip away!0

Well, today's 1/2 marathon ended up with different goals thanks to a crash on my bike yesterday. A portion of the paved trail I rode on had been recently seal coated. We had light rain yesterday. I came down a small slope that had a right turn and my rear wheel skidded out with no notice and I crashed my right side of my body into the asphalt. This happened around mile 12. After I let the nausea pass, I was able to slowly finish the ride without further incident and get back to my car. 26+ miles total.
Nothing broken but I have a very sore shoulder and wrist. Also an abrasion on my hip that doesn't bother me, but a pulled hip flexor muscle that does. I was limping last night and early this morning.
Instead of riding to the start of the 1/2 marathon like I originally planned, I drove even though it meant dealing with the shuttle bus craziness. The course had several loops and I am very familiar with the forest preserve trails so if I needed to, I knew how to shorten the route and just DNF. I know from past encounters with asphalt that trying to stay mobile will help with healing. As long as my gait isn't affected, that is.
I successfully completed the 1/2 marathon! I walked the whole distance, kept a very consistent pace, and finished 1 minute before the cutoff (3:29). In addition, I reeled in at least 10-12 people in the second half who weren't able to keep a consistent pace. So I wasn't DFL and this wasn't a PW either. I earned my PW (personal worst) at a trail 1/2 in April in Wisconsin when we had temps in the mid 70's just 2 weeks after I did a marathon in the same area in the snow. Can you say NOT heat adapted? I was at the "stick a fork in me I'm done" stage at mile 11 and completely stopped caring about my finish time when I almost passed out coming down the second climb of the observation tower (yes, 2 loop course where you got to climb the tower each lap! Highest point in Waukesha county, fyi).
My hip flexor felt good after I got warmed up during the first 1/4 mile. It was more than willing to walk briskly but vetoed any thoughts of running. That is fine. I can let it rest all week and just work on staying loose.
I was also pleased that my shoulder didn't bother me while walking in spite of the arm movement. I will say that it was challenging to get the sports bra on this morning :-(
It was a glorious day to be outside!2 -
Regina - sorry to learn of the wipe out yesterday, but, wow!, way to go with the race today! Hope you're feeling all ok soon.
Agreed - great day to be outside! I did a 4 mile loop around a couple lakes near home this morning, then some light biking. I have a busy week ahead and am making the most of my down time today.1 -
Way to go, Regina!
I have chosen not to run today. My left calf/Achilles is very tight, and I think a day of rest is in order. Sad that it happened leading up to a long run, with great weather. I plan to try it again tomorrow night after work on the TM.0 -
Weren't we going to have a Monday thread?0
