This thread is for GOADies who like to run. New runners, old runners, and even wannabe runners meet here to discuss the joys and challenges of running. Use this space to log your miles, ask questions, share your race reports, or for anything else related to running.
New runners - and even those just thinking about starting out - are always welcome. There's no reason to lurk here. Join the pack and tell us about your running!
Oftentimes the GotR thread will pose a question or raise an issue in order to facilitate the conversation, but this is always an open forum to chat about any running-related topic.
TOPIC OF THE DAY: training paces -- how fast do you go, and how do you know how fast to go?
Alt: your weekend running . . . races? . . . long runs? . . . other? . . . what's shaking in our neck of the woods???

QotD: I know that my running pace is probably about a min/mi. faster than my brisk walk pace. I also tend not to run as much uphill yet, except to get the heart rate up. I kind of go by the StuartPW model of "if you think you can run slower, you are probably running too fast." I know that if something feels tweaky to slow down.
AQotD: Rest day today. Either Saturday or Sunday, I will actually try to run outside during daylight hours, hopefully for 3 mi. or so. Probably early Sunday AM, but we will see.0 -
Hey . . . I ran last evening! 2 miles, easy paced, with DW along on her bike. Nice outing. I'll be running Sat AM and trying much harder to stay in a T-Th-Sa groove afterwards.
Training paces can be hard to figure. I'm at a point where I feel great and the weather is cool and dry, and if I don't consciously pace myself I can end up going too fast. I use benchmarks from other training cycles and make a best guess as to what is right based on feel and past performance. I like your approach, @jbrack381us. That's definitely how I need to start out on my long(er) runs in the coming weeks.
Alt: I'll run 4 or so tomorrow, and aim for a nice bike ride Sunday AM. I have at least a half day of work to do at some point over the weekend, but aside from that looking forward to some needed relaxation!
Happy running, all!0 -
Greetings!
My training pace is usually guided by what my goal time is for my next trail event. For example, I wanted to complete my trail marathon in 6 hours which meant about a 13:45 average pace. I was on target for that until I crashed on my bike. Remember that average has to cover all aid station stops as well as my walking intervals. I may try for a 6 hour finish at my trail marathon in 2 weeks. It isn't a technical course but I also haven't done any decent amount of running in 3 weeks.
Alt: 1/2 marathon at a new to me venue this morning. Might get rained on. Rain gear is packed along with change of clothes and towels. More hiking tomorrow in Wisconsin.0 -
4 5 miles around Grays Bay and Libbss Lake on the east end of Lake Minnetonka. Picture perfect morning. Makes me kind of wish I'd taken a picture. LOL.1

Good Afternoon!
We had a great turnout at the Walk Like MADD. My DSIL and DNiece also showed up! My wife tried, but couldn't finish. I ended up going back for her, and my DSIL and DNiece in the car. DNiece was injured in a car wreck from a distracted driver about 10 years ago. She still has hip problems related to that. We had something like 131 total walkers, including 30-40 runners. I didn't get an exact count. Next year, we are planning to have a chip timed event. If we advertise early, we can get enough runners to pay for it. It costs $550 for a basic chipped timed race. The weather was perfect today! We also met our goal for the year, I think. We won't know until all of the raffle money and late contributions are counted in. The real goal? No more deaths and injuries from drunk and drugged driving. This is 100% preventable. All of the money raised goes for victim support in Kansas, so that's a good thing.
No running today with 15K steps getting ready for the walk, placing signs, etc. I might run tomorrow?
Calf held up good. I'm old, I got up at dark-thirty this morning. Time for a little nap!2 -
5K this AM with DW at her pace. Finished at just under one hour. She signed up for a 5K at the end of Oct. as meeting a challenge and is now trying to work on the walking/jogging part so that she can make sure that she does not end up DNF. She has done mostly strength training up until now. Jogged a little, walked most of it. Weather was perfect.
Pool workout tomorrow AM while DW does strength training with her tribe. Back to more serious running on Monday.

Run for the hills 1/2 marathon on Saturday at Moraine Hills state park. What a beautiful park despite the mist and the light rain for 2/3 of the race.
I had no expectations for a finishing time other than to be done before the course closed in 3h 15min. I had not had a run of any significance in 3 weeks due to crashing on my bike. Wave starts to reduce congestion on the paths meant I had a 4 minute delay. I ran the first mile so that the faster people could get around me before I started my run/walk intervals. Took me a while to settle into comfortable ratio. I ended up defaulting to how I have been training all summer, 4 min run/1 min walk.
Small race so there were only 126 runners doing the half (there was also a 10k option). I was the last runner until around the halfway point when a 9 min/1 min ratio felt better. The cooling effect of the rain really helped me as I tend towards overheating. Air temp was in low 60s, light winds.
I started to catch back up with a couple of women who passed me earlier. My watch was telling me that I had a comfortable margin to get done before the cutoff. After 10 miles, I ran almost continuously as I was feeling pretty good. By mile 12 I realized I could get done in under 3 hours so I pushed harder that last mile and reeled in 3 more people.
2:57:39 120 out of 126. 3/3 in age group! Way better than I ever expected given my lack of recent running.0 -
Awesome job, Regina! Way to go!1
