Post surgery excercise

I'm proceeding as though I'm getting my call today and will be scheduled for my sleeve before Christmas. How soon after can you start weight training? I was looking at joining before surgery but it seems like a bad idea to start then stop for whatever period of time required to heal. I need to add something to my walking for strength and lifting is supposed to offer other benefits for men over 50. Any thoughts or experiences

My doctor said to wait 6 weeks before lifting weights, but walking was definitely okay until then

My surgeon required we be released for exercise before we do ANYTHING other than walk. They told us it would be eight weeks. I was released at four weeks. Definitely, listen to your surgeon's orders. I don't think that starting now, then taking a break would be a detriment. I think it could help you start to build better habits now. Talk to the gym, I know the one I go to has a suspension price to help fray costs for when you can't go to the gym for whatever reason.0

It was at my 8 week follow up appointment that I was released for everything.

I was back doing treadmill/elliptical stuff at 4 weeks, but was told not to do anything weight bearing for about 8 weeks (especially anything straining the ab muscles). I was walking immediately post surgery and golfing after a couple of weeks (swinging gently). But, i had gotten into pretty good shape pre-surgery, so my muscles were used to it. Not sure I would jump in to weight training post surgery. I can't imagine there would be any problems starting now and the picking back up after surgery.
Anything you can do pre-surgery to get stronger and more fit will only help you.0 -
I agree with rpyle111! Do what you can now and push yourself, it will do you so much good. I started walking as much as I could tolerate within a week. Up to 75% of normal exertion at about 4 weeks. I started weights around 6 weeks.0
