Kidney stones

My aunt started a low carb high fat diet 8 weeks ago. She has been doing fabulously losing weight. But last week she was super sick and was diagnosed with kidney stones. Did she do anything wrong? I have been on it and never had a problem. Does this happen to people a lot? She googled it, and it seems it does, but I haven't really known anyone (except her) that has problems. Any input would be appreciated:) thanks!

I had kidney stones once well before this WOE. When I researched it (because that's what I do), I found out there are different types of kidney stones with different causes. I don't remember all of the specifics, but the couple of things that come to mind are that dehydration, excess dietary calcium and caffeine can all play a role in one of the types. Given the need for more water intake with this WOE, especially in the beginning, along with the tendency for people to increase dairy through cheese, HWC, etc and the addition of BPC, this COULD have contributed to her kidney stones.3

My DH had 3 rounds of kidney stones before this WOE, none after. He was diagnosed with T2D after the last round (3 years ago) and was told that kidney stones can be a sign of diabetes. He has not had any after changing eating habits and being medication for T2D. He does eat a lot of cheese (a family discussion point) but he also stays really well hydrated.
My SIL had kidney stones once, is not diabetic, is not overweight, did not change her WOE (Canadian Food guide) but stays well hydrated. No problem since.
Hydration, no matter what you are eating, seems key.3 -
Thank you! She really does feel better eating this way. Her mood has improved and she has more energy. She doesn't want to stop. Ugh. It's just so frustrating because she finally found something that works and now she may have to quit. Her dr did just put her on calcium pills so that may be what caused it but she doesn't go back to the dr till Monday:(1

Kidney stones generally don't form in as few as 8 weeks, except in rare cases usually accompanied by long-term dehydration.
I doubt it was this WoE - more than likely it's purely an unfortunate coincidence.1 -
The only way to know the true cause is to have the stones analyzed by a nephrologist, otherwise it's just guess work on the Dr's part.2

I thought there was a thorough discussion about kidney stones in the launch pad but I can't find it.
I thought there was great info from @wabmester who is seriously missed.
Anyone recall if this was in launchpad and maybe I'm missing it?1 -
I'll go hunting tomorrow. I'm halfway into a tall glass at the moment, if you catch my drift.2

The post in the Open Threads had mostly sodium but did off-hand mention a kidney stone, so I looked at the most recent update on it (Jan of last year) and searched page by page backward from there.
I'll go ahead and link either this or that one later so it will be around in case someone else needs it.1 -
