Wanting sweets

I am on day 7 of a ketogenic diet. I am not following a particular plan. I started with 50 carbs and have generally stayed around 20 for most of week. My fasting glucose has dropped from 171 to low 150's and I have lost 7 pounds. I know this was water and that was great cause water pooling in my legs is my enemy. My issue is here in the last two days I am craving sweets. I bought and ate a couple of atkins bars and am afraid this may be what set it off or a diet jello. I had been using only stevia. Please help. I do not want to give up. Thanks in advance.

Whenever I eat things like that all it does is make me want more. I find the only thing I can manage without further stirring up cravings is real 85% or higher dark chocolate, not the artificially sweetened chocolate that is so popular in keto groups, real chocolate.
Or the thing I most often do is have a flavored tea with stevia or a cup of coffee with stevia and half n half.
I save making any keto deserts for holidays or birthdays and stay away from pudding mixes that contain maltodextrin. I typically just flavor cream cheese with whatever flavor I want and sweeten with stevia and erythritol or sucralose. I only use liquid sweeteners to avoid fillers like maltodextrin.
I used to eat a whole box of candy every day. I found that I had to change my mindset that sweets are not for every day. They are rare and that still doesn't make them special. I can't allow that kind of thought personally.5 -
When I get a craving for sweets, I have a stick or two of sugar-free gum. The one I buy has 2g of sugar alcohol per stick.
I also used to really abuse sour candies... anything super sour I would crave. I got over that by buying some pure citric acid - that's the white powder they use to make candy 'sour'. 1/4 teaspoon of that on your tongue and no more sour cravings for days lol.2 -
Everyone is different. Personally, I find my sweet-tooth is sated with Pepsi one and SF jello with whipped cream. You have to find what works for you and that takes some trial and error. The one thing I know that DOESN'T work for is deprivation.2

Bacon helps cut the craving for sweets for me. As far a a sweet, that is not too bad, sugar-free jello, but top it off with 1/2 cup of Sigi's 4% Fat - just one half of the 1 cup serving - it's almost like whipped cream or frosting - WITHOUT all the sugar or adding more artificial sweetner. Plus, you get the added benefit of additional probiotics to your treat!
Good luck.1 -
I'm one who does better abstaining than trying moderation so Atkins Bars and the like never worked for me. I bought 5 once (Quest) because they were on sale and they were gone in 2 days. OK, maybe 1 day.
I struggled with craving/bingeing on ice cream for a LONG while and my "miracle solution" for that was sugar free jello. I made and ate it by the pint. The combo of cold and quantity seemed to be effective for me.
Later, I decided to quit eating artificial sweeteners so the sugar free jello needed an alternative due to standard brands having aspartame. I went through a couple different homemade options and my current is to make it with Knox gelatin, raspberry extract and Swerve.
Honestly, I've not made the extract/Swerve version yet because I still have some of my former homemade sugar free in the refrigerator which was made with a little packet of dry kool-aid, Knox gelatin and truvia or stevia drops.
Now that I have this raspberry extract on hand, @Sunny_Bunnie's idea of cream cheese, extract and a little stevia sounds good. Ease to make it 1 serving at a time. Perhaps my habits are OK enough now to be content with one serving. I'll test my habits/sweet tooth with it....
I think each of us has to find our tricks to get beyond craving and/or bingeing. I'm 100% with @Heather4448 regarding deprivation. I think it was a feeling of deprivation and restricting well after weight loss in order to maintain, that took me down my rocky road of bingeing during 2015. That and the simple fact that I was always hungry before starting keto in 2016.
@tekwriter, are you eating enough? Your diary is open and I'm aware that you might not be fully completing it daily so it may be far from accurate. My point with that is since you're only 7 days new to keto, you might be better served by eating more keto calories initially and not trying to adhere too closely to your calorie target. You can focus on calories once you get the carbs and cravings out of your system. Cravings may return from time to time but you'll have more "tools" to help you get through them or satisfy them.

What is Sigi's? Would that be found with the yogurt and such?0 -
Thank you all. I am going to try almond milk and choco whey protien with stevia. I think that might do it. I didn't finish the last 2 days not knowing how to count the Atkins and pigskin UT will try it today.1

My lesson learned today, a month in, is if I don't eat enough fat with lunch I get hangry and cravey. First time since I started that I had any kind of cravings for sugar or had that feeling of hunger that I know wasn't real1

I have a huge sweet tooth. That's one thing about LCHF that I love....specifically, that I can safely indulge my sweet tooth without completely derailing my weightloss and exercise goals. I do have to make my sweet treats at home from healthy "flours" (nut flours, coconut flour, flaxseed meal, lupin four, protein powders, etc.) and healthy fats. There are also tons of free LCHF recipes for everything under the sun online too.1

I had a really sweet tooth when I first started eating this way. I'm with @Sunny_Bunny_ 85% dark chocolate works well for me. It's something I can have a small amount of, which satisfys my craving and doesn't spark a craving for more of anything.
I generally find that my sweet cravings are worse when my fat intake drops, maybe worth taking a look at your intake and seeing if anything has changed much.3 -
@Sunny_Bunny_ recommended the Green & Black's brand of dark chocolate which I was able to purchase over the weekend and has been a real help to my husband who is just starting keto and has a much bigger sweet tooth than me. Need to find again.2

agree with the above...i've been enjoying lindt 90% supreme dark.2 -
Cocoa powder mixed into a small container of whole fat yogurt. Unless you are on zero carbs it can fit in your day. Sometimes I add in a tablespoon of peanut, or almond or walnut butter. Always does the trick 4 me.2

While I'm trying to limit my intake of artificial sweeteners...I do find when I am having a super duper sweet craving, I like to get some diet root beer and mix it with some cream. I typically do a cup of the diet soda with 2 Tbsp of cream and it's like a root beer float. I too find that 85% dark chocolate, just one square savored, keeps the beast at bay.0

If you add Mio or Nesfrutta drops (the water enhancers) in berry flavour to the yogourt & cocoa powder you get a Black Forest Cheesecake taste. Also yummy.1
