    I just saw this amazing video on Youtube for a store called the 99 cent store. In it the woman showed off her haul. She had all this produce, and meat replacements, and everything was 99 cents. It was AMAZING! I don't have any of these 99 cents stores around where I live, but I think they are worth checking out to see if any are in your area. If you are a budgeter, I think that can increase your pantry, and keep your budget in check shopping at that store. :)

    I've heard of those kinds of stores, but unfortunately I don't have one around me. I'm an Aldi shopper, which has really reasonable prices, and then I supplement with sale items from Meijer and Family Fare (a local chain).

    As long as they're reasonable like that, yeah! I just don't want too many duplicates or threads titled, like, "I need advice on..." They just get so unmanageable >_<

    Since starting on this journey I have had a hard time eating out. A lot of times I end up ordering vegetable sides to put together a meal, but it's even harder when eating holiday dinners with family when you are not the host.

    Last Thanksgiving I ended up making an entire Thanksgiving dinner to take to a Thanksgiving dinner. It was ridiculous! Christmas, I was too exhausted to cook, and bring an entire meal, and found myself eating just salad while everyone else feasted. So Easter is rolling around this Sunday, and I've been asked to make the sweet potatoes, my sweet potatoes. You'd think that would be an easy request, but no. One person does not like marshmallows, so I have to make an entirely different sweet potato recipe to his liking. The sweet potato recipe for the table, when I make, I make an extra dish for a certain family member to take home, and I personally can't eat either of those two recipes because of my heart, so if I want sweet potatoes, I need to make a healthy sweet potato dish. That's four, count them, FOUR dishes of sweet potatoes. I also am making a gluten free cake for the gluten free member of the family, as it will be the only cake she can eat, and I can control what goes into it so it does not cause me heart distress. I grilled my hosts on exactly what will be on the menu, and from the entire menu I can eat salad, and dry rolls. So I bought myself a pack of low saturated fat cheese slices that I will share, and I plan on making myself a cheese sandwich, with a salad on the side, and if I make myself a dish of sweet potatoes, those as well.

    Is this a problem for just me? What's holidays like for everyone else?

    When I first turned vegetarian I was the same way, trying to not make it hard for anyone else so I would just eat a salad or not complain (and do without eating, since all had meat in it) but now I make one meal (like the Penne with Asparagus and Lemon Pesto recipe, that I will bring with me to dinner at Moms on Sunday) now I know I will have something good to eat at dinner. As for the restaurants, I ask the waiter/waitress, I tell them you are vegetarian and what do they recommend. I have been in places and they have had the cook/chef make me something that is not even on the menu. Its great! Or see if they have a meatless burger or black bean burger that can be placed in a wrap that they might normally serve with chicken. be creative but do not feel bad to speak up. I know at first you don't but it taste so much better when you do!

    Ohhhhh, that's one of the threads I wanted to make! I'mma put up a "Dining Out" thread so we can talk about different restaurants options, advice, and horror stories lol.

    And last Thanksgiving Christmas actually, my dad (who is now practically vegan for health reasons) put BACON in the otherwise vegetarian GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE that he knew I was so looking forward to eating. I thought my sister had made it though, so I asked her if it had any sort of meat or broth or anything in it and she said no... So I'm eating it, right? And it's tasty, love that green bean casserole, and then I felt something and I spit it out and I'm like WHO PUT BACON IN THE GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE. Dad goes, "Me. It's better like that." Joke's on him, anyway, because now he can't have meat. HAH. :p

    I'mma edit this and add: Your family does not seem very supportive or accommodating, whereas you're accommodating up to their personal preferences. Doesn't really seem fair, to say the least. :/ I got annoyed about my dad putting bacon in a dish he knew I liked, my diet isn't necessarily for health reasons. I hope you can maybe talk to them about being more considerate.

    I'd be throwing sweet potatoes at people if I had to do this :D Easter is at our house this year and since I've never been a fan of ham to begin with, (as in hot ham makes me gag, blech), I'm just going to focus on the sides, which I've picked and then told people to provide, (hostess privilege lol). I'm making a meatless 7 layer salad, and then others are bringing mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, bread/rolls, Dutch apple dessert, (it's a family dish with apples, applesauce and 'stale' bread), corn, macaroni and cheese and then Heath Bar dessert. I'll eat a bit of all of this and then my mother-in-law is bringing a ham, which I'll avoid like the plague :p

    That's a great idea about bringing an entree dish! I just might make a gluten free pasta salad to share. I'll see if I feel well enough to cook another dish in addition to the cake, and sweet potatoes. I'll make it gluten free because one member of the family is gluten free, and I don't like to make any dish that excludes any family member, or guest. Somehow it just feels rude.

    I never thought of asking the wait staff about what's best to eat. That ius a really good idea!

    YIKES! I would not have been happy at all. Bacon+My Ailing Heart= Disaster!

    My hosts are EXTREMELY accommodating when it comes to preferences as in someone does not say for example like celery. What they have a very hard time accepting is medically necessary diets. As in, a gluten free diet, or a heart healthy vegetarian diet. When I was asked to bring the sweet potatoes I told my host that I thought I might bring coleslaw, to which I got a crinkled nose, and she said "but were already are having salad" That's like saying but we already are having green beans, why have carrots? There is no real understanding about how I eat at all.

    Generally, in my understanding, vegetarians still consume by-products of animals, including eggs and dairy. Basically, anything that doesn't KILL the animal. Whereas flexitarians technically consume meat, but they cut back A LOT. They might only eat meat three times a week, or something like that.

    Sidenote: When people find out I'm vegetarian, sometimes they ask if I still eat eggs, which is understandable. Others ask me if I eat chicken. And I'm like... WAT. Lol.

    I'm looking for some very low calories, but filling snacks. Last night I ate a HUGE salad with non fat dressing to fill in the void, but I really could use some seriously filling 100 calories or less ideas. Thanks! :)

    I shared a recipe for healthy ranch dip in the Healthy Snacks discussion. I usually break it down into 7 servings, and it comes to be around 50-ish calories. Veggies are super low-cal. For example, 3 ounces of carrots are only 35 calories. Those two together have less than 100 calories, about 4 grams of protein, and a couple grams of fiber. Not to mention it's savory, crunchy, and satisfying. For me it's the perfect afternoon or evening snack to keep me going or hold me over till dinner/sleep. :) You could probably sub carrots for celery or peppers too. Whatever you enjoy! (Or make yourself enjoy, like I did.)

    Here's another ranch recipe I just found http://skinnyms.com/skinny-ms-ranch-dip/ that's only about 30 calories per serving. Mine's probably more because i use a bit of mayo too (oops)

    Strawberry & Cream Cheese Sandwich
    “Sliced strawberries and reduced-fat cream cheese come together in a sandwich for this quick and healthy lunchbox treat.”
    Ingredients

    1 tablespoon reduced-fat cream cheese, (Neufchâtel)
    ¼ teaspoon honey
    ⅛ teaspoon freshly grated orange zest
    2 slices very thin whole-wheat sandwich bread
    2 medium strawberries, sliced
    Directions

    1
    Combine cream cheese, honey and orange zest in a bowl. Spread bread with the cheese mixture. Place sliced strawberries on 1 piece of bread, top with the other.

    We were considering getting an air fryer because of my father's medical condition. It eventually came down to the fact that we don't have enough room in our house/kitchen for another gadget like that. I started a discussion and got some recommendations from other MFP users though :)

    The Philips seems to be really popular. It's more expensive but I don't think I've seen anyone NOT recommend it. If you have room for it and everything I think it might be worth the investment, especially if it's health-related. I mean, you can bake and "oven fry" all you want but it doesn't cook as evenly and it heats up the whole house.

    I did a bit of sleuthing, and ordered these 4 books in case anyone here is interested in finding more recipes closer to their old style of eating, or have meat eaters within their households.
