How alcohol effects differ on Keto?

Today I had a glass of wine, the first in a while, and I have had at least moderate on my Ketostix for several days since I did a 5 day fat fast. I had lunch with a friend and at well (beet salad with pecans and 4 shrimp on the side, but I also had a glass of dry red wine. I was absolutely silly on it before I was half done. Then, after returning home, I had supper of ribs with olives on the side (5) and 2 fat bombs. My macros were almost perfect for the day. Then I suddenly knew my stomach was going into a full reverse and I barely made it to the bathroom. You know the rest of the story.
Has anyone else had difficulty with alcohol when in ketosis? This was a surprise to me. I don't drink often, and one glass, maybe two is it when I do. I felt fine before and after, so it is hard to think it was anything but the alcohol. Maybe alcohol is a no-no for some on keto??

Your tolerance goes down, that's what I have experienced.
As for ketosis, I believe it 'pauses' while there is alcohol in your system as your body turns to process that first.0 -
Yep, very reduced tolerance. I actually just avoid it for the most part now. Not worth it.0

As you now know, it's for real: if you're in ketosis, you're a cheap date. (Heck, you can get a contact buzz from picking up a bottle of mouthwash ....)
PS A bad experience, but a delightful retelling! Thx.2 -
Explains a lot. Had a few drinks last weekend and got Gaga and could not figure out why as it was just a few social drinks. Now it makes sense. I am becoming a cheap date...1

Based on these comments I kick myself out of keto every evening.
Have a couple of Sleemans 2.0 low carb beer most evenings.
Sigh.
Maybe one more thing I have to give up.
Sure enough is easier to just be fat...3 -
You can drink alcohol and stay in ketosis as long as you don't go overboard on your macros. The alcohol will be burned by the body in preference of all other nutrients consumed. The fat loss process with slow down because a smaller amount of the free fatty acids will be converted into ketones.2

Hmmm. Hard booze claims to have no carbs..... so if we stay within our calorie limits (if we have them), we can drink Gin & Diet Tonics all day long, right? The day is young.....4 -

Yup! You just won't burn any fat, lol!2 -
And beware of the drunk munchies!!!4

Wow, I've become a floozie without even trying. It must be one of the other bonuses of going keto. So, do I tell DH I'm officially a cheap date OR do I tell him I no longer want to waste precious money on a glass of fine wine and we can put that money instead towards a fine sapphire??6

You can tell him that by being keto, you're saving him money and for that, you deserve a gift!2 -

It's pathetic. The only munchies I have around are pumpkin seeds and dry cat food. I'll try to resist both of 'em when I resume the watered-down Drinking Man's Diet after the nap I feel coming on (for both of which I have you to thank).
Thanks for the flashing the green light. I think I'll like my new woe.3 -

haha ... I feel uniquely unqualified to answer that (DH=dumb husband?), but as a disinterested outsider, I'd say the latter might at least get you a rhinestone if you lay off the Ripple.
Yeah, we've all turned floozie. It's one of the things that keeps partners less grumbly about our bizarre ways, except in, er, unusual circumstances involving tainted wine, perhaps..... (That and less gas, higher IQ, etc.)1 -
Same here... tolerance is very low. Wine (my favorite) is much harder on me than hard liquor. I'll go for the vodka & diet soda now. After a couple glasses of wine, I don't remember anything the next day.3

LOL, but I hope DH (Dear Husband) will shower me in gemstones when I am svelte and sexy again...oh, wait, I had to be svelte and sexy before. Hmmm, may have to rethink the "get a sapphire" approach. Which gives me an idea...hehehe. Yeah, that higher IQ thing is kicking in.

You go, girl! Keep us posted as to what schemes that fertile mind cooks up, eh?

Yeah, I'm also a very cheap date. I must have food with my (standard measure) drink or I am over the legal drive limit (just barely...) after 1. With food I can have 1 per hour and be OK yet.
Unfortunately alcohol brings out the dry crunchy carb cravings along with salt fats - bad combo. Tonight it was tequila, and soda, with salt and lime wedges, leading to a whole box of gluten free rosemary and olive oil crackers with old cheddar. I'm not even going to look at the carb count of that because OMG, it's 2g/little cracker and... the whole box!

I shouldn't have bought the crackers in the first place, but GF anything on sale draws my eye, especially crunchy crackery things with yummy spices.0

I was excited to be a cheap date lol but I seem to have the opposite reaction as some Keto folks do, of alcohol not having much effect at all anymore. Oh well! I drink tequila or burbon & stop at one to keep calories down.
Even though the buzz is minimal, it's still nice to have a special occasion cocktail while my husband sips a beer. On vacation I made friends with the bartenders at our favorite spots & challenged them to make me a totally unsweet drink, they were up for the challenge, we all had fun & I didn't gain any weight in 10 days of indulging!3 -

Sounds like it's working out, even if you're not a cheap date (yet).
What sort of concoction(s) did your bartender create?0 -
@RalfLott I got a lot of totally unsweet margaritas, with salted rims, of course, lol. I had a whiskey sour with no syrup. I had something with bourbon and lemon that wasn't a whiskey sour, he made it up on the spot. They would warn: it's going to be really tart! And I'm like nahhhh haha! I don't use sweeteners so tart is totally different for me now, not an issue. There were carbs in some liquors but I just accounted for them in my logging & it didn't get out of hand.2

The same is true for me @LizinLowell I haven't noticed much difference except that I now know and recognize that much alcohol consumption leads me down the path of munching and I don't need to munch. Even if it is LC friendly foods nobody really NEEDS to consume the entire block of extra sharp white cheddar after a few glasses of wine.
not that I know ANYBODY who would do that. *cough*3 -

That's me. Always a heavyweight, keto, low-carb, or SAD. It's expensive in $$ and calories, so for now, I'm not wasting my currency.
I'm serious, it takes me 4 or 5 shots to get where I like. Complete horsecrap.0 -

^^^^ This pretty much nails it. I will never give up my wine and chocolates (keto ones home made these days) I am a very cheap drunk now. So the liquor store bill has plummeted here. I do use sugar free ginger beer to make a keto mule some weekends, one and I am giddy. A full glass of wine, and the same thing. Haven't had either make me sick however.
I also have found that Le Croix lemon flavored sparkling water with white wine makes a great wine sprizer. 1 oz of LC water to 4 oz of wine makes a refreshing drink and if others are drinking they don't comment on my beverage, it is all bubbly, everyone thinks it is champers .
Sugar alcohol gets burned up first so plan accordingly.0
