Everyone says it, but just how do you do it? How do you take the guidelines of the WW program and turn them into a lifestyle you can live every day...from now on? That is what we are here to explore. Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Newbie? Join in! Veteran? Join in! Your thoughts may be just what someone else needs to hear.

Because I don't want to end up like my mother who also battled her weight nearly all her life. The last several years of her life the consequences of her weight really lowered her quality of life. She had a hard time walking due to her knees and she spent most of the last 2 years of her life in the recliner because she was so fatigued from congestive heart failure. She died at age 75. Both her sisters lived much longer but they didn't have her weight issues.2

Why is it important to you to lose weight and modify your lifestyle?
The importance for me is I gained 50 lbs. in the past year and I know how good I felt back then not hurting half as much as now. My health was on a good note cutting my meds-now I’m not so sure. I was very active not so much now. I need to be in better health for myself and to help my wife with her needs due to disabilities. I am pulling it back together very slowly. Thank you Goad. For all your posts, they are helpful and important to me.

- My parents and my siblings were / are overweight. I don't want to end up like them.
- I have screws in my ankle from an accident 20 years ago. My surgeon said, "don't gain weight"
- I want to stay healthy. My father had high cholesterol and BP. He had heart surgery. I'd like to skip the pills and surgery.
- I want to be active.
On the vanity side:
- When I meet new people, I don't want them to think about my weight first and make judgments. I want them to get to know me first.
- I want to get back into my skinny clothes. (I've gained 10 lbs over the last couple of years.
Lastly, I know if I don't get on this now, it will get worse.

"Why is it important to you to lose weight and modify your lifestyle?" In my case why was it important?
I think that I just feel better, look better in a swimsuit or dressed up, and likely enjoy some health benefits too although cholesterol isn't one of them (hereditary in my case). Along with activity (and I do need both to feel ok) I don't huff and puff too much and am not as depressed as I might be otherwise. I still need my daily moving stuff to shake off the demons.

I honestly think that, if I hadn't lost weight I might not be alive today. I was getting that bad. Motivation to maintain is obvious. My health is pretty good, now, and I want to keep it that way. I have two very young grandkids. I want to see them have children of their own.3

To live with freedom of movement, freedom from pain (physical).

To be able to participate in Martial arts at the level I want to.
To be good looking for my beautiful wife.
To be healthy.2 -
Because without mindfulness I will overeat almost every meal. I've done it enough times to know that I have to be more accountable to myself.2

A top three, in descending order:
(3) Health. Ranked 3rd probably because I've been blessed with good health, but I get it.
(2) Activity. I enjoy being a mobile, active person. Hiking, biking, walking, boating, paddling ... all more accessible and enjoyable without extra pounds.
(1) Self esteem (call it vanity if you want, but that has a negative connotation that I don't feel at all). I'm short, and can't do anything about that. I'm balding, and can't do much about that. I do have control over my weight and fitness. I feel better about myself when I look and feel fit.2 -
Well, it doesn't now as much as it did then (a few years ago).
Then, there were a number of reasons to lose weight: I was tired of feeling lousy and out of energy. My "light sleeping" was apnea in the making. Realistically, I was a liability to my family as I got bigger and bigger.
As for modifying the lifestyle, that is the phase I'm currently in. Having lost the bulk of the weight, I'm choosing to keep it off. That requires me to continue the changes I used to lose the weight. Now I'm just starting to add consistent walking to the mix. While it took me a while to get into a sustained groove, I might be getting there. I'm enjoying it more and more. Along with the other changes, I'm enjoying more self-confidence, wearing smaller and more colorful clothes and able to get around much better. All these are reasons to continue with the modified lifestyle, one day at a time.1
