Prof. Volek is a great speaker - thanks for posting.1 -
The latest CDC results estimate 84.1 million prediabetics in the USA, and 30.3 million diabetics.
Current population is 325 million.
26% prediabetic or 9.3% diabetic or 35.2% that are one or the other...but not half...

The research was published in JAMA.0

Since I’m not pre-diabetic does that mean I’m “unamerican?”5

The quote came from Volek on the video. I’m not aware of the exact research article he is referring to.0

Here's the catch-quote from all the data in that study:We found the prevalence of prediabetes was 37% to 38% in the overall population, and consequently 49% to 52% of the population was estimated to have either diabetes or prediabetes. The prevalence of prediabetes was greater than 30% in all sex and racial/ethnic categories, and generally highest among non-Hispanic white individuals and non-Hispanic black individuals. In a previous study of NHANES data, prediabetes using level of hemoglobin A1c or FPG increased from 29% in 1999-2002 to 36% in 2007-2010.62 -
News from September says Japan now has 20 million at risk or with diabetes, current population is 126 million. http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/AJ201709220045.html

Furthermore, countries like the United States and England have such a problem with obesity they are having to change their height/weight charts to let people still join the military.

I hope I'm not hijacking the thread by going there, but I think it boils down to the processed foods and wheat intake. At least that is what I surmised from reading the wheat belly book. It makes sense since we didn't have this issue before they started hybrid changes to wheat.
Anyway, I apologize if I took this somewhere the poster didn't want to go. I think it's all related though.3 -
They used a very small population sample - less than 3K adult for estimating prevalence, and only 24K for trend estimation. There's not going to be a huge amount of accuracy with that kind of input given a base population of 325 mil.0

N=1 only but over the past three years staying off sugar and grains has solidly reversed my prediabetes numbers. Last A1C was 5.0
I actually got off sugar and grains on a hunch it might manage my arthritis pain of 40 years. In just 30 days I knew my hunch was in fact a home run and proven over the past 1095 days.5
