We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for March are:
Monday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Tuesday - 88olds (George)
Wednesday - Calvin2008Brian
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - Al_Howard
Today's Topic: Been There, Done That
On a lighter note, what’s the goofiest thing you’ve ever done in pursuit of weight loss? Diet pills? Grapefruit diet? No carbs? All carbs? Took your food scale to Olive Garden? Wore a rubber suit to a 5K? Did you know it was goofy when you were doing it? How’d it work out?

Goofiest? Hard to pick.
I knew I was around some kind of bend when I came home from my meeting, stripped of my clothes and weighed them on my food scale. You see, I was trying to find out if my scale at home was in sync with the WW scale at my meeting. I knew it was obsessive when I was doing it. That didn’t stop me.
But before that was Jenny Craig which was basically a no food WL program. I was actually eating rice cakes.
And somewhere in there was SlimFast. It worked for Tommy Lasorda, right?0 -
Many. But the one that stands out for me was the peel-a-pound soup diet. You could have as much of the soup as you liked and as often as you liked. A group of us at work started it together. I lasted about a week.

The goofiest was the 5 hotdogs at a meal, on WW circa 1978.
The strangest diet was South Beach (Citrical and all). Made just over 30 days.0 -
By the way, this isn't one I ever did but my former sister-in-law did. She lost 100 pounds on the grapefruit and boiled egg diet sometime in the early 70's. She ate a grapefruit and 2 boiled eggs for breakfast and lunch; a grapefruit, boiled egg, and salad (with only vinegar as a salad dressing) for dinner. Every day. For a year.
I thought she was nuts. But she lost 100 pounds in that year and has kept it off (she's now 75 years old). If she gains a little weight, she goes back to eating this way until she has dropped anything she's gained.1 -
Atkins. Lasted about 3 months. My wife did not like how I smelled on it. I also had started reading a lot of the nutritional negatives about the diet.
So, I moved on.

Vegan diet. A former boss was all into "The China Study" which touted a vegan lifestyle. I think I lasted a month. Later found out that much of the data in that study had been cherry-picked.0

Years ago, I went to Hawaii with a thin girlfriend. I thought for the week that I would eat what she did. She could do things like just have a piece of toast for breakfast and an ice cream cone for lunch. I last just those two meals.0

Diet pills, no success. Slimfast lost 80 lbs. gained more back the I lost. High fiber no fat diet lost 30lbs. Joined WW lost 83 gained back 60 and still fighting to succeed again.1

While you probably are right about the data, I have known a few folks (including my son and DIL) who have done very well on this plan. It is very healthy, and it has helped my son reverse his diabetes. Both have lost significant weight. They don't seem to have found the diet to be limiting.
Which goes to show how some things work for some folks, but don't work for other folks. And, vice versa.

Oh yeah, forgot the diet pills, given to me by a USAF doctor. Went from 245 to 230 in about two weeks, and developed an eye twitch. Not to mention the 3-4 hours sleep. Did hold that for about 9 years, before going to WW in 1978 (with TOL).0

I can't say I've really done anything goofy. Unless you count "hoping to lose weight" as an actual way to get it done. I did that and "planning to lose weight" for a helluva long time. Neither worked...0
