Avacados - high carbs?

Hello All
I'm a little confused about avacados and their carb count. When looking at the database for carbs on MFP, there are lots of different counts. I'm bummed that they are so high since I count total carbs and not net carbs.
Suggestions and help? I'd like to continue to eat these since they are so good for us.

With 12 grams of carbs, 10 of which are fiber, along with 21 grams of fat. Avos can be eaten, and those amounts are for a cup. If you eat half or less at a meal they should fit in even at full carb counts. I'd eat those before cauliflower or broccoli personally, YMMV.3

It depends on your priorities, and what you mean by 'so good for us'. Do the potential benefits of avocado as a food vs., say, butter (i.e. something more weighted towards a single macronutrient), outweigh the potential benefits of keeping carbs at a limit defined by total carbs instead of net carbs?
What are your goals, how long have you been at this LCHF thing, which camp are you in re: fiber, and so on.
In my life, avocado consumption is only limited by their price not their carbs.7 -

I agree.
I too just track total carbs but I also show fibre. If my fibre is high fir the day, I did not worry much about going over my carb limit.
If I ate 35 g of carbs with 20 g of fibre, I am fine with that. It probably included good veggies and nuts. I would be happier with that than something closer to my carb goal like 25 g of carbs but 3 g of fibre. With only 3 g of fibre, chances are good that my day included fewer veggies and some sugars or refined starches. KWIM?1 -
I luv them so much, but don't seem to be able to stop at half of one...which would just barely work with my food plan. Unless there is someone present and willing to eat the other half when I do, it's a food I have to keep at bay. Very sad about that. I love everything about them. Might give it a whirl when I get back down to maintenance...1

Elise7, you could make guacamole, take out a portion equal to 1/2 avocado, and tightly cover and refrigerate the rest. The lime/lemon juice in the guac will keep it from turning dark. We do it all the time.2

I eat them regular and no issues with weight loss. There are worse things to put you over with :-)0

I ate avocados during weight loss and still eat them. They're nutritious IMO. A "super food" to me. Full of vitamins and minerals. It is helpful to look at more than carbs, fat and protein when choosing what to eat.0

Avocados are one of the main reasons I do net carbs instead of total.3

you have to count NET carbs. If you try just counting normal carbs you will not get the micro nutrients you need from greens. Broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, spinach, avocado, etc. These need to be consumed daily as part of your diet. Net Carbs, trust me.0

I"m scared to do net carbs. My weight loss has been slow - well good for me but comparing myself to others that are on it - slow. I am super dedicated and obeying all the rules tracking everything, exercising, staying below 20 total carbs, and eating between 1000 to 1200 daily and keeping my macros as close to my goals as possible. Also, doing intermittent fasting. I started Feb 16 and as of today lost 10 pounds. I have 50 more to go. I"m 54 yrs old. I told my husband who also has joined me (he's lost 18), that I'd be the only one who would survive a concentration camp. Weight just sticks to me
But I can see kwalton65 what you mean by the macros I need in the veggies!0 -

Unless you are diabetic, in which case this could be very bad advice. If you aren't diabetic, you can safety count net carbs. If you are diabetic you'll need to be careful as fiber doesn't exactly "cancel out" carbohydrates exactly that simply and your glucose could still be affected.0 -
I"m not diabetic - but had/have the onset of pre diabetes (over weight). Eating low carb has really really helped with my blood sugar levels. I don't spike and drop like I use to.1

Agreed. I even buy the guacamole multi pack from Costco and freeze them for winter eating. Love me some avocado!1 -

Congratulations on ten pounds!!
I’m all for following the rules, but whose? Some low-carbers stay under 150g of carbs for the day; others literally eat none. There’s a lot of room in there to find a plan that actually works for you.
I keep my net carbs between 5-10% of my calories (multiply the grams by four to compare) and am down 19lbs in three months and I get to eat an avocado every day if I want (which, if there’s a ripe one in the house, I do!). In fact, my breakfast the other day was an especially large avocado with a whole box of raspberries, and it was delicious.
Counting net carbs and using a ratio rather than a fixed target allows me to get way more produce in than I could otherwise, while still being low-carb enough to stay in ketosis. That’s an option, if you’re looking for options.1
