A Must Watch

I didn't seem to have a problem until my protein was fairly equal to my fats. This was during maintenance although like I said, I started to gain and had to bump my fat back up and lower my protein. I also didn't feel good with my protein that high, but I see other Low Carbers who have their protein levels that high and they do fantastic. There are so many variables involved that also may cause the differences like age, hormones, whether someone is still losing weight or maintaining, etc. And maybe after I've been on this WOE for longer that might not happen. I'll probably try upping it again down the road and see what happens, but I do know I'm not the only one who has to keep protein low. I've read other posts by LCHF folks who've had the same thing happen to them. It would be an interesting study.1

You're right, it would!1

Im very interested in this as I have experienced the exact same thing. Im trying to lose, not in maintenance, but if my fat and protein grams are close together , I stop. and blood sugars over 100. I was on prednisone which I thought was the problem, but quit several weeks ago and still have the issue. I watched the wolfe vid the other day, and thought ok, I will try again, but Im having trouble getting enough protein. Im curious if you areT2 and if you take meds. Im almost T2 but Ive resisted metformin.1 -
I was on the way to being T2 but going keto took care of that as long as I stay with a lower protein for now. You'll see the, "How much protein do we need" issue debated a lot here, partly because, as I said previously, some folks really can do well on higher levels of protein while doing low carb. Right now, I'm just not one of them and I know other folks doing LCHF who get knocked out of ketosis when they raise their protein too high. I'm hoping that down the road I'll be able to bump my protein back up simply because I like it, lol. But for now I've gotta keep it at a lower amount yet I'm still building muscle/strength and seeing improvements so that's good. You're going about it the right way by learning to listen to your own body.2

I think one of the issues in the debate is that there are two separate things going on (generally) when people talk about protein "kicking them out of ketosis."
1. The assumption is that being in ketosis is how fat loss happens, and therefore being "kicked out" is bad. That's incorrect. Fat burning (from either body fat or consumed fat) is how ketosis happens. Ketones are a product of fat burning, not the other way around. For weight loss purposes, a particular level of ketosis is not required, and any measurable level of ketosis is just fine (and being "kicked out" is temporary and a normal part of being metabolically flexible).
2. The assumption that, because consuming more protein reduces the ketone measurements, that it's happening because it's being "converted to sugar." This is also a myth. Protein prompts insulin release, because it's how it gets where it needs to go. Insulin also regulates the production of both glucose and ketones. So, when insulin rises, ketone and glucose production is reduced. In the vast majority of cases, this is actually what happens when people consume more protein, because both ketogenesis and gluconeogenesis are demand-driven processes, not supply driven (ie - the body engages these systems when other parts demand the fuel, not just because the substrates are there). Again, this isn't really a bad thing. The insulin reaction to protein intake is markedly different from the insulin reaction to sugar intake, usually in both amount and length of time. Once the protein is processed, the body should go back to burning body fat just fine.
In short, many people are measuring the wrong thing. Being in ketosis isn't really the goal if you're doing this for weight loss, (protein-sparing) weight loss is the goal. So, if you're losing weight and keeping/building muscle at the protein level that you're at, the ketone measurement isn't really important. (And if you're diabetic, the ketone measurement still isn't particularly important, the blood sugar one is.)10 -
Fiiiiiiinnnnaaaallllyyy got to watch this. Very interesting.
Boy what I'd give to have people like that to hold my hand and guide me thru 3-4 weeks of changing to keto diet.
I literally need someone to draw me a picture in my own home.2 -
For those who don't subscribe to Netflix and would like to watch it. I saw it last week on Youtube. King Komodo has uploaded it.1
