Best milk for Type 1 Diabetic?

Last night I bought some almond milk for my daughter to try.... But after getting home and comparing the facts, I'm really not sure that almond milk would be better than regular milk. Regular milk has 12 carbs, but 8 protein whereas almond milk has 8 carbs with only 1 protein. So which one would be the better choice? I'm thinking the regular milk, but please tell me if I'm wrong.

Or if you guys have any better suggestions, I'm open for that also.

    What brand of almond milk are you buying? I drink Silk Almond Unsweetened and it only has 1g of carbs per cup, only 1g of protein as well but it also has vitamins such as Vit A, C, D & E, Calcium, some Iron, Riboflavin and Magnesium. Hope that helps :smile:

    It was Silk, but it's the Original. I just looked up all their products and I see now. Have you tried the almond and cashew with Flax?

    It sounds like whatever you picked up is sweetened. Unless the carton has a big "unsweetened" label on it, then it's usually sweetened with sugar or cane syrup and that's where all the carbs are coming from, the sugar, not the nuts.

    Cashew milk is a bit more creamy and rich, like half and half...while almond milk is just more like regular milk. Both are good, and if she doesn't like them unsweet you can always sweeten with a non-sugar sweetener of your choice, but I've never seen them in the store with any alternative sweeteners.

    I've tried all of them and liked them, I just always stuck with silk milk unsweetened, it might've had the most vitamins in it per cup but I'm not sure. Compare the labels next time you go to the store and just like the other response, can always sweeten it with no sugar sweeteners. I used Stevia in my almond milk once and it actually tasted pretty good.

    The store I was at only had that 1 kind. It was an impulse buy :( but we're going to look for the one with the flax in it and give it a try since Flaxseed is supposed to help stabilize blood sugars.

    I’m not diabetic - but I watch my sugar like a hawk. I’ve been using hemp milk and macadamia milk- both surprisingly good!
    I like all the vitamins in minerals from the hemp milk as well.
    Typical unsweetened Hemp milk:
    1 cup =80 cal, 1 carb, no sugar. (Only 2 grams protein - but 25% daily value vitamin b12)

    I'm diabetic and I use both 2% cow's milk and unsweetened almond milk.

    I use cow's milk for coffee because almond milk is too thin for my liking. I like creamy coffee! I use almond milk for smoothies because I'm using a larger quantity.

    I don't drink any milk by itself because I don't care for the texture or taste.

    Finally someone else who doesn't drink milk because of the taste and texture. I use cream or nut milks only.
    I stopped drinking cow's milk at 6 months old and never went back. My mom was so concerned but the dr. said, "She doesn't like it, she is obviously getting what she needs from the foods she is eating now. Look at her, she is perfectly healthy."

    You're not the only one. My grandfather had a dairy farm and we used to get raw milk from him every week... I got spoiled by the taste and cannot stand the taste of pasteurized milk. I haven't had a glass of milk since he retired 30 years ago.

    Oooh - I have always wanted to try raw milk. Tastes that different huh? There are places here ito get it in NY - I’ll have to seek it out.

    We would walk to the neighbor's farm and get a gallon jug of fresh milk out of their spring house and leave a quarter. To me the difference between fresh raw farm milk and the stuff one buys in the store is lack of cream in the store stuff. I've said before over my years here that to this day, when I take a container of milk of the refrigerator...I shake it. No need to but I still do it. We had to do that with real milk because the cream would rise to the top. It always needed shook. Real milk has lots of cream in it. :)

    Half and half is good substitute for whole/2%/skim. 1 carb and can thin it with water to the consistency of which ever milk you prefer. I like the thickness of it. My daughter who is pre-diabetic likes it with 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 tbsp stevia, 1 tsp vanilla extract. Very rich and sweet.

    It's her new 1 carb chocolate milk. I use same mix in my coffee. And she also likes the cashew 1 carb milk, I bought it yesterday.

    Forgot to mention, we have to heat the cocoa powder and half and half or cashew milk over low heat, so that the cocoa powder dissolves.

    Our verdict is in... My daughter prefers the half and half over the cashew milk. We just finished the carton of cashew milk. She said the cashew milk wasn't bad, just that the half and half tastes better.

    Hope you found one your daughter likes!!
