Keto and Red Meat

My MD recently put me on a Keto diet for my autoimmune disease. My dietary preferences are much closer aligned with Vegan as opposed to Keto. It has been a few weeks and every time I attempt to eat red meat, I cannot stop gagging. Does anyone have experience with this? Should I push through, or heed my body's automatic reaction as a warning? I'd appreciate any feedback!

There is such a thing as vegan keto, although it’s extremely limited. Vegetarians can eat keto, as well. Put either of those terms into Pinterest’s search bar and you’ll get hundreds of thousands of tips to get you started. In the meantime, no: there’s absolutely no reason you MUST eat red meat in order to get into ketosis. Fish, chicken, pork, eggs, avocado, cheese, nuts, and vegetable oil all pack the same kind of low-carb caloric punch that will help you to get there. Find foods you like that are especially rich in fat, protein, or both, and go to town.4

Hi, I'm a vegetarian ketoer (8 years vegetarian, around 12 months on and off keto). It's definitely doable, just takes a bit more work - and it is harder to eat out.
You are welcome to friend me and see my diary to see what I eat (although some are Australian low carb products).
My typical shopping list looks like:
-Low carb veggies: Spinach, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Capsicum, Rocket, Avocadoes (go through 1/2 per day)
-Low carb fruit: Berries
-Cheeses of all varieties
-Chobani FIT low carb/high protein yoghurt
-Seeds and nuts
-Butter and cream
-Philadelphia Cream Cheese
-Herman Brot bread (low carb bread available in Australia)
-Eggs
-Some kind of sugar substitute
-Grapeseed oil for cooking, Avocado/Macadamia/Walnut/Almond/Olive oil for salads.
-Tofu/Vegetarian mince/sausages. These vary in carb count, so shop around.
Simplest meal I make is just scrambled eggs with chives (throw in some sour cream or mascarpone to make it extra tasty), spinach and avocado.
Otherwise I regularly make these: https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/baked-ricotta-2/12c5527d-43f7-4359-87a7-ef2193aae3ad

scrambled tofu with tumeric and coconut oil...so yum...
zucchini noodles with coconut milk curry...
it is more limiting going veg and keto, but if that's what you like to eat, then it can be done...

Red meat is not a keto requirement. No need to push through gagging.
Black SOYbeans are a pretty darn awesome source of fiber and protein. Use them any way you would use any other bean/legume.3 -
In the LCD Launch Pad stickie, the mods put together a good collection of vegan and vegetarian links for keto/lchf:

I would eat what you like best. Skip beef if you don't like it.
If you do want red meat, consider ground meat in a casserole - perhaps the texture and lower level of chewiness might work better for you.1 -
Look for the book "Ketotarian" By Dr. Will Cole https://drwillcole.com/ketotarian/ and look for books by this guy: https://drhyman.com/blog/2014/11/07/pegan-paleo-vegan/
And, "Always Hungry" by David Ludwig. All of his recipes are designed for meat eaters and vegetarians.
Take what you can from each of those books.
And, as others have said, there's no red meat requirement. Try chicken, fish etc. as well. And, yes black SOYbeans have an amazing fat/carb/protein ratio.0 -
If you want to eat keto, but don't want to eat any meat whatsoever, it's certainly possible. Try nuts.0

Did your dr. specifically state eat red meat? If so it is probably the B vitamins you are missing. I ask because some autoimmune diets restrict red meat. There are keto vegan meal plans. I have a friend who has had great success with this one: https://www.ruled.me/comprehensive-guide-vegan-ketogenic-diet/ . However her blood work showed her Bs very low and she does supplement and get a B12 shot regularly. She is now adding red meat back in, just small amounts in a primarily veggie dish a few times a week, not just eating chunks in a stew or a steak. She is a Buddhist, so it is religion that got her into vegan. She gets the red meat from grass fed farms and she also will get elk or venison from hunted sources. It is expensive, so she keep it low but it is helping with the B vitamin issue.
If red meat was not specified, then follow the other meat sources mentioned in the other posts above mine. The gaging is probably you mindset, some people feel the same way when they add back in fats that they have been told are sooooo bad for you for most of their lives.
Good luck on sorting yourself out.0 -
If you don't mind fish and seafood, they can be an excellent source for B vitamins if those are a concern. I'm fairly certain sardines, shrimp, clams and mussels may be a better source of B12 than red meat (except liver).0

In my case I have stopped listening to the advice noise from myself and others and just heed what my body is telling me to eat for my autoimmune health concerns.
Why do you connect Red Meat and Keto together? I have been Keto for over 4 years now and only eat foods that I love. I look at meat as a protein source and red meat is just one protein option as others have stated.
Best of success in 2019.
