I'm sorry that you are facing this challenge. I, too, have thyroid problems and it really stinks!

It's unwise to seek advice from strangers on the Internet regarding thyroid medication type and/or dosage. Thyroid medications have wide ranging effects on our bodies as I suspect you have experienced. The wrong type and/or inappropriate amounts can cause serious consequences.

I hope you are able to get your medication issue addressed and feel better soon.

Sorry to read of your issues and that you have a doctor who seems to know little, not to mention your naturopath!

I don't like the idea of simply adding cytomel or similar to make up your shortfall in t3. I tried looking into the causes of reverse t3 which includes stress, iron deficiency and more. (I would suggest high copper could cause an issue, it depletes or prevents uptake of iron, from memory. Copper is high particularly if you are vegetarian or vegan, this way of eating is higher in copper, taking the pill or using an iud can also increase copper levels.

I found Stop the Thyroid Madness, which suggests lowering the amount of NDT you are on by a grain or so. 2 then as you have been advised try cytamel or similar. it seems most reverse t3 is made in the liver so assisting your liver in its elimination functions could be helpful. Then, 4th on the list, including selenium to your diet, between 200 and 400 mcg, they recommend having your selenium levels tested first. Selenium is essential for conversion.

Reverse t3 is often made because there is a problem in conversion, selenium though zinc can be involved. Other vitamins and minerals could also be low. Reverse t3 is the mirror image of T3, which is why it fails to enter the cells it should fit like a 3 pin plug. Please try reading in to this for yourself.

I think there is another Desiccated thyroid product, the name escapes me. it is produced to a different pill value, the does are different, changing one for one is not advised for this reason. I wonder if another product might possibly suit you better though mineral and vitamin issues would probably be similar with both.

I suppose I have set you more questions than answers, for this I'm very sorry. I hope you can find another doctor who is more knowledgeable than the one you have. I am assuming you are in the US or similar because you are on Amour, so it should be more easy for you to find a sympathetic doctor, unless you are out in the wilds somewhere. Most of all, Do what is right for yourself. Wishing you all the very best.

First of all try and find a new endocrinologist - one you can communicate with and who will work with you.

This isn't appropriate to determine online and one would need your full thyroid panel (TSH, fT3, fT4, rT3) and an examination to understand what an ideal dose would be. Dosage is primarily determined by your body mass as this is hormonal, but there are a number of critical variables involved.
