Hello all!
Has anyone ever heard of an allergy to Vitamins? I've taken vitamins for years but lately I have noticed that after I take them I end up with like a congested hacky cough for over half the day. I've been taking spring valley active women's daily vitamin I get from Walmart. It's a pack that comes with multi vitamin, vit Different, fish oil and all. Supposed to be good for joint support. I'm supposed to take calcium and vitamin D daily anyway. I don't seem to notice the crazy cough on days I forget to take the pack. Some days I feel really run down, like today, and then some days I have sooo much energy. Could these vitamins be causing this? What vitamins is a must on keto? I was told to take calcium and D3 from orthopedic doctor due to weak bones(for several years now) and then I take magnesium at night. I also get in plenty of sodium now too. Thanks in advance!

I also need to add that I've been having headaches also lately (20 days a month at the least). Could that be associated with vitamins? We have been thinking hormones or migraines but I haven't thought about vitamins causing them

Yes. You can be reacting to any number of things that have all been piled together to form those "healthy" supplements.

Listen to your gut feeling. If you feel better overall on days you don't take them, that's huge. Your body is giving you information and feedback all the time. Don't ignore it because you think something is "supposed" to be good for you.

Yes, it can definitely be an allergy to that brand. I would look at their ingredients and try to pinpoint a possible filler (binding agent) they use for their vitamin and find another brand that uses something different. This will probably take some time on the vitamin aisle, or you could research it on amazon from the comfort of your recliner.

The headaches: for me; I will take a shot of pickle juice (like a shot glass size full or two) and that seems to help them a lot when I get that midday slump headache sometimes. I buy the big jars of pickles and make my own dill relish (to use with tuna, or chicken)with the pickles just so I have plenty of pickle juice on hand.

Absolutely. My extended family are naturopaths and are very adamant that the quality of the supplement is not only really important but if they're mixed with fillers it causes more harm than good. Most pills have some kind of binder, filler, die etc.

In your shoes, I would probably take a break and not take the vit. Pack for at least a month. I'd monitor how I feel and see what improves.

I personally, don't supplement anything but magneasium and I monitor my salt intake.

I agree that it’s probably a reaction to something in the pill rather than the vitamin itself. Maybe instead of the pack get each vitamin you need to take individually and introduce them one at a time. I’d personally probably introduce one each week. If you get the cough when you introduce a new one it’s the culprit and you can return it and try a different brand with a different formulation.

Thank you all so very much! I haven't done them for the last 2 days and feel so much better already. I know I will have to eventually start certain ones back, but I will go back to some I know that didn't mess with me. I really appreciate all of you taking time to reply to me!

Yep, Karla & I have to be gluten free and there are a surprising number of supplements (and medications - even prescription ones) that have binders to make them into tablet form that are dangerous to us. When in doubt you could phone the company - there's usually a number on the side of the package - or website - and specifically ask about what the binding/filler ingredients are. I agree with the rest of these posts, try different brands, and separate your supplements instead of generic pack so you can pinpoint the problem.
