Strategy failure. Knowing what to work out when and how long ?

I’ve been going for a week or so straight and I don’t know how to get like a routine going. I think I did legs chest and shoulders today cause I was picking random machines just to do something. When I look up routines I don’t even know what half the workouts are or why I’m doing 1 of 20 for one thing and 3 sets of 15 for another. Also how do I know what weight to use like do I try one and if it’s too light go heavier on the next rep. So many machines so little knowledge
