We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Tuesday - whathapnd (Emmie)

Thursday - Wild Card!!!
Friday - imastar2 (Derrick)
Today's Topic: Experimenting
When we're aiming to lose weight or improve some aspect of our health, we're likely to try out different approaches to see which will yield our desired results. Or maybe we've stumbled upon something that seems to yield results and want to see if there's an actual correlation between our actions and results versus just dumb luck/coincidence, so we try an experiment to either prove or disprove our hypothesis.
What's your most recent experiment regarding weight loss or improved health? What are you learning/did you learn?
Bonus Question: What's your favorite pickle flavor?

When I lost 40 pounds several years ago, I experimented all the time. It made things fun and kept my head in the game - - and I learned a lot about what actually worked for me versus what was just magical thinking.
Right now, I'm experimenting with macros and sleep. I've mentioned before that I tend to have sleep issues. Some of that stems from an inability to stick to a routine. But I've noticed lately that if I have a higher carb meal at night, I tend to fall asleep easier. And too many carbs during the day will make me sleepy at the wrong time. I'm generally not super strict about macros, but I'm going to see if there's anything to my hunch. This means that I'll need to look at my macros a little more carefully to figure out how many carbs to try for the evening. I'm kind of jazzed about this.
Bonus question: Dill pickles for sure.2 -
I'm on WW purple (like the old Simply Filling) and I decided to eat less than my DPs most days, if not all. I've been doing this for the last 11 1/2 weeks, and I am dropping weight (down #16.4). I'm not starving myself, just eating all the healthy 0 pt foods with others thrown in! I think the biggest bonus that I didn't see coming with this plan, is that, it keeps me from binging, which means I don't have to fight my way back OP the next day. This has made eating healthy easy (at least so far ).
The other thing I started doing 11 1/2 weeks ago was checking off a list of goals each day. It keeps my approach balanced (eating, activity, spiritual) and keeps my head in the game. My daily list includes a.m. quiet time, tracking food, 1 or less diet pop, eating w/in 8 hrs, 250 steps 7/10 hours in the day, arm exercises, and p.m. gratitude. I also did 3x a week activities, light weight lifting and time on a balance board.
The 8 hr window is the only one I'm struggling with because sometimes DH isn't ready for dinner early enough or i decide to have popcorn in the evening, but it definitely helps me think before I eat at night. Steps were important because I was getting stuck to the couch for too long (thanks covid 😔). Limiting diet coke helped minimize my desire for salty snacks, they just go together. Arm and core exercises are making me stronger. And bookending my day with time with God put my mind in a good place! I love a list, so this has been really helpful!
Bonus; Famous Dave's Signature Spicy Pickle Chips1 -
My 2 most recent experiments-
Olive oil and avocado. I eat both nearly every day. Not together exactly though I do tend to put some avocado in my salads and use homemade olive oil dressing.
But those 2 foods are usually 1 and 2 on anti-inflation food lists. I think it’s working. I seem to have fewer aches and pains than 3-4 months ago.
Walking. About 3.5-4 miles per day. It’s my lockdown exercise program. Seems to agree with me.
Good topic. I’ve always thought that the best approach was to consider the whole project a big experiment.1 -
I really dislike experimenting. Give me a plan that works and I will definitely work it.
Perhaps one of the reasons I dislike WW changing Plans in the past and couldn’t adapt.
That being said, I am currently on WW Blue and have been since 2019, prior to their offering different color Plans. It’s exceeded my expectations! So much so that I am maintaining 30 pounds BELOW my chosen Goal weight when rejoining.
Guess then that you could say my experimental phase was seeing whether 10, 20, 30 pounds below Goal was sustainable.
It is presently.....1 -
Not much experimenting here except that I've been experimenting with calories a little. I go up too high I gain. If I go too low I get tired and even gain sometimes. So the experiment continues but heart health issues continue to be a primary focus.
Bonus?
Bread and Butter Pickles. No particular brand I love them all.0
