Yes, I'm caught up on health posts and life updates! I came across cute six-year-olds, foggy snow-filled forests, a Protein Panel, and everything in between: all interesting!
I spent yesterday recalculating my body recomposition stats so today was the first time putting it all in action.
To spare you the multicolored spreadsheet, I added another 100 calories/day in an effort to help increase my rate of lean muscle mass gain. But I have to be sure to achieve my net calorie target in MFP more often (I'm generally under). More weight-bearing during my resistance training is also going to be required. Done safely and paying attention to form, of course. Let's see how the rest of the month fares. 🤷🏾♀️
@donna25trinity Belated Merry Christmas to your coworkers lol I'd snap a pic of what you eat and then log to the best of your ability once home. Also, that's an automatic pass day for me regardless of how little I eat unless I know the chef's process (ie. they don't go crazy with oils 'n added fats, little to no creamy sauces, etc)
The @SummerSkier method works especially if you know in advance that you won't like the food anyway. Just eat a filling, healthy meal BEFORE the event. Then when you get to the social, you load your plate lightly with non-starchy veggies and otherwise just shift food around while being thoroughly engaged in table banter. If it's table service with multiple courses, just poke at the - you guessed it - non-starchy veggies or fruit in each course.

Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? Yes. This is a major victory for me as we eat with my sister and brother-in-law every Friday and serve huge meals with bread and desserts. I tend to eat when I sit at the table too long but did not do it tonight.

This is a sunset behind the North Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona. Within 3 minutes this almost volcanic eruption-like scene was gone. I love hiking in the desert.11 -
Exercise: 87 minutes hiking with Rose. Frankly, we had intended to hike for one hour but we missed our path of return and had to bush whack back through steep washes and rough going. We weren’t “lost”. We just didn’t know how to get back to our prior path. Oops!

Thank you, Rick. Means a lot to me, as it’s taken me 5-years to figure out most of this!
Aka@RangerRickL aka@HikerExtraordinaire!
PS. During my 5 years, I’ve noticed that celebrations & travel are the two main TRAPS forest loss or maintenance.
At least I’ve figured out the celebrations. Hehe
Post-COVID, I’ll have to get better at travel. The Half Size Me gal has a great strategy for creating a plan over multiple years for vacation travel. Basically one change each year and the accumulate. She also strongly recommends coming back a day early to get groceries in the house & your home ready for your normal routine prior to going back to work/school etc. she might even make the grocery list & meal plan for the week back prior to departure.
And the first thing the do is get a standard number of food items for breakfast, and possibly lunch, I believe, that can be found anywhere,so they only eat our one meal.

I have a xmas party to attend tomorrow, was postponed in dec due to covid. Any tips u guys can give on how to stay within my budget limit? I dnt know wat food they will be serving so i can't pretrack like i normally wld do. How do u guys manage this? I know skipping meals in the morning and at lunch is not the trick as ive done this in the past and i get too starving and over eat.
@donna25trinity
I’m not allowed to eat at buffets due to suppressed immune system.
So I find out in advance & will bring food or just let the host know I won’t be eating.
I know this sounds odd. But I’m keeping this kidney as long as I can!
Everyone understands - actually one person doesn’t... so I will only meet her away from her home as she continually offers me food & even when I keep politely refusing, puts it out & I admit I’m like an alcoholic with food & now I can concentrate on what we were talking about I’m just using all my energy not to dive into the treats. Taxing to say the least. I won’t put myself through that again.
With COVID, we are not attending gatherings, eating out, or getting take-out.
If I were or could eat, I’d do as you & others have suggested.
Lots of water- sparking with lemon
Half plate veggies
Decide on bread OR dessert OR skip both “Too full, thanks though” I notice thin people don’t say sorry & don’t offer a reason for not finishing food or declining dessert...
“None for me.”
Avoid cheese, fried foods
Get all sauces on the side
Ditto dressings
Other strategies
Eat half of everything
Eat the items & at the pace of the healthiest person at the table.
And as you said eat your normal meals leading up to event. Just because someone decided to have a party doesn’t mean our bodies need a Lot more food & a Lot more sodium, saturated fat etc.
There will always be an occasion to overeat...celebrations, BBQ’s, happy hours, etc.
I decided - quite consciously- to separate the celebration/social from the food. I focus on the people. I use the alcoholic analogy a lot. Would it be ok for an alcoholic to be sober except during social occasions....
Unlikely, if it triggers a relapse?!
So if you were hosting a party, and a recovering alcoholic called you to let you know they were going to avoid all alcohol, you’d say “Great, good for you! Several others will be doing the same! Thanks for the heads up!”
Love analogies! Looking at food the same way as an alcoholic does alcohol is a great way to do it! You are right too! If someone came to your party and said I can't drink because I am 10 years sober, we would not ever offer them that again! So why do we not listen when someone tells us they can't eat cake, cookies, candy, chocolate, etc., because one bite will start a binge? People don't view it the same way, sadly!
Nicely said, Miss Molly!

Went out on one of my more challenging bike routes this morning - up the hill behind my house. The sun was very bright - reflecting off the wet roads and puddles - and the sky was blue. Beautiful! But I stopped off at mum's on the way home and by the time we had chatted for half an hour it was raining. So I got wet on the last 10 minutes home!
When you post your exercise adventures, I notice how descriptive you have become aware of your surroundings! You mention the sun was bright, even telling us how it reflected off the wet roads and puddles! The sky was the color blue, and it was a beautiful day, even though later you got a bit of water on you, which you won't melt from the water! Ha, Ha!
I believe our Miss Molly in the UAC told you to notice your surroundings more on your bike rides! I just wanted to tell you that I have noticed you have taken that advice to heart and are using it! Way to go!4 -

I notice that instead of your three yesses that you type, now you have been telling us more of what kind of exercise you do, and I love that! I like to hear what people do, as I get ideas from those posts! When @MaltedTea told us about her kettlebell exercises, I asked for one for Christmas; when Mrs_Hoffer got her trampoline, I want one now too! Of, course we can just put yes, yes, yes, but I love when I hear what others are doing! Thank you for starting to share more about what YOU are doing with us!3 -

Hanging out with the love of your life is rewarding in and of itself 🥰 Perhaps redefining what a reward is as well as what is rewardable will help you come to a new level. Hubby may have some ideas too.
That said, glad to hear you're doing well! 🙌🏿7 -

My exercise of choice while I work out some sort of low back/hip injury is a seated elliptical. I don't have to go out in bad weather and I can avoid the gym. It's easy to get an hour in while watching TV and using it, I have been able to walk with less pain. I'm hoping I can get back to hiking in a few months.5 -

Sorry I went AWOL for a couple days. My routine has been totally off track. I hated to admit it, but in the middle of a pandemic, we had 2 granddaughters (ages 3 and 5) for 8 days. My daughter and SIL had to attend a wedding half-way across the country. We kept thinking the wedding would be postponed but as we ticked closer, realized it was full steam ahead and SIL was the best man. So they left the girls with us and drove. They were an absolute delight and it was a treat to spend time with them but I am not used to that! They're up the same time as me, and grandma likes peace and quiet for the first 2 cups of coffee! Then getting everybody dressed, off to preschool, I'd work for 2.5 hours, pick them up, come home, play, eat, etc etc. Twice I bundled them up to play outside in the snow. I told hubby I felt like the mom from "A Christmas Story" bundling up Ralphie's brother. I was honestly exhausted before we ever walked out the door! A couple days I ran on the treadmill while they played. So exercise was not the problem, and even food choices were OK. It was once they went home that everything fell apart! Hubby brought home TWO bottles of wine - and once I start alcohol, the munchies hit. I have to be honest with myself, and claim two pass days already. No one to blame but myself. This is not "the end" - just part of the process.
Also - this morning I did get caught up on all the posts and there is one in particular that I have to comment on. @RangerRickL - you mentioned that Rose kicked you out of the kitchen when you retired and tried to rearrange her kitchen. I almost spit out my coffee when I read that. When my hubby and I had been dating just a month or two, he brought dinner to my house (he's a great cook and I think he wanted to impress me). At some point, I left the room to do something and when I came back into the kitchen, he was standing there with a cabinet door open and very proudly said "ta-da! I fixed your kitchen!" He had moved around some dishes/bowls for what he thought would be more organized. I was FURIOUS because I had been married for 32 years to an extremely manipulative man, was quite happy being single, and thought he was just another man that was going to constantly criticize and tell me what to do. I grabbed all the stuff he had brought, threw it into the box he brought it in, shoved the box into his chest and said "get out" while walking to the door! He had a look of complete shock on his face but walked out. I was still fuming when he very timidly knocked on the door and said that he couldn't leave under such bad circumstances, could we just talk about this? His reason/excuse was that he had worked in quality control for 25 years and he has trouble not looking/evaluating things for how they can be done better. I realized he wasn't a jerk, forgave him, and a year later we were married. We laugh about it now.8 -
