We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Today's Topic: If There Was No Scale

If you had no means to weigh yourself regularly, could you trust your behavior and/or simply tracking food and exercise to result in weight loss? If so, how long would you be comfortable not weighing yourself? If not, what does regularly weighing in do for you?

I have two primary faults - I’m gullible, and I’m a liar. I can tell myself the most amazing unbelievable things, and I believe them. Trust me? Not likely. Absent a scale, the only way I’d know if I was off track would be when my clothes were too tight.

I’ve been down that path all too recently.

I went down this path last fall at some point don't remember exactly when. My nutritionist suggested I weigh once a week. I've been a daily weighed for years except trips or day or two away from the scale. I've gained weight just about each time I tried it so I believe the answer to the question is I can't trust my behavior. I'm sure daily weighing is a habit I could break but it seems to keep me grounded in reality not to mention it reveals a point that I must put on the brakes.

Interesting question. In all these years I don’t recall this issue.

I don’t think a world without scales would go well for me. I’m just too prone to calorie/point creep. Which eventually manifests itself as scale creep.

I would have to go to some other measure. Tight belt I suppose.

But as a creeper I’m heavily into denial. I know when I’m operating over the line but I’m always telling myself that somehow I’m magically getting away with it until the numbers show up on the scale. Even then it takes several days to convince myself that the numbers are real. Think of the games I could play with a tight belt.

Humming- I don’t care what they say I can’t play in a world without scales.

No weigh ins is how I ended up posting the "I'm Back" post a month or so ago. So I know how that story ends.
