Forgot to check in yesterday, but 3 x yes for 5/7 and 5/8.
I decided to let MFP adjust my calories when I changed my goal to maintenance and was pleasantly surprised that it gave me 400 more per day! I double checked that with several online calculators and all seem to agree. I guess that just goes to show how skewed my sense of a realistic calorie goal is, after a lifetime of dieting.10 -
Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? Yes steps
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? Yes
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank?Yes

The scale isn’t moving, which is infuriating, but my clothes seem bigger so I guess something is happening. Also my stomach is still covered in a soft squishy layer of cookies past, but I’m starting to see lines form like there’s actually muscle growing under it all! Hopefully the scale will get itself together and start moving soon. I blame stress.
Probably not tomorrow. Tomorrow is probably going to be my first pass day. It’s Mother’s Day and I will eat pie.
Speaking of the kiddo, I’m gonna get whiny for a moment and vent. Apologies in advance and feel free to just skip this part. Since we moved from remote/hybrid instruction to 5 days a week in school, the teacher he started the year with is gone, and the pediatrician that originally diagnosed him with ADHD is gone - we are conducting an experiment per his new doc where we take him off his Ritalin for a few days and then put him back on since we need to set a new base line for exactly how much it’s helping him, if he needs a higher dose, etc. So… it’s fun here this weekend and happy early Mothers Day me? Lol. 🤦🏻♀️ We’re also going to go see a Developmental Pediatrician because his regular Pediatrician thinks he’s got Anxiety and ODD coexisting with the ADHD (school psychologist agrees, and I def agree on the anxiety piece). Thankfully his current doc and the school psychologist agree he’s not on the spectrum, like his first doc had casually thrown out there as a possibility when making blanket statements about “boys like him”, so that was a lovely relief to hear. Who knew Kindergarten would be so much fun?! Yesterday kiddo asked the Magic 8 ball if I was going to be grumpy again today, it said yes. It wasn’t wrong. Hahahahaha. I am overwhelmed and would like a nap. ☹️ #endrant
I hope everyone is doing well out there. ❤️ Sorry I’m not doing great at responding to other posts lately.13 -

Tonight we met some friends for dinner at an Italian owned pizzeria with exceptional Napoletano style pizza. Normally my partner and I split the pizza but tonight I ate only 1/3 and he ate the rest. I predetermined that this was the only way to stay within my calories. When we got home we took a walk around the neighborhood which helped burn a few more calories thus ensuring I stayed within my calorie requirements. Dining out is a challenge that requires strategies to stay within calories limits.5 -
Pass day for me. My son’s birthday - I still managed to get in 30 minutes of Pilates abs a 45 minute dog walk but there was brunching, cake and take out. I didn’t go too far over calories but definitely a pass day and I definitely enjoyed it!
@snowshoe072 i hope that your knee settles and you are not in for a rough time with a flare up
@mshawski great news on the clothes feeling bigger and sorry to hear about all the stress with your son’s diagnosis and meds. Uncertainty is so hard I find. I hope you get some time to chill on Mother’s Day and also enjoy the fruits of your labour, I’m sure that for all the ups and downs you have one very lovely kid. I actually find Mothers Day quite hard, I think it’s all the hype and the photos of everyone with their perfect seeming day and presents and cards. In my heart of hearts, I don’t want my kids to feel overly grateful to me (yet!) just loved.5 -

@mshawski Sympathies for the challenges, and IMM it is so difficult with it comes to our kids. I remember well all their young years and how their problems (big and small) tugged at my heart. Oddly, they and now 34 and almost 30 and they are still feel like "my babies" when they have a problem.
ANYHOW, to your situation. I was thinking of you yesterday morning when I was listening to a podcast. I meant to write but the day was crazy and I ended up forgetting. So, glad you commented again. Apologies in advance if anyhow of the following is off putting. Has the nutritional angle ever been discussed with you? Over the years, I have heard a couple discussions referencing nutrition and ADHD type behavior.
The first time I heard it was in 2018 and I was listening to a podcast dealing with Keto. At the time I was open to ideas that might help improve an aging brain (I am now heading for 60). Now, am I advocating for Keto? NO, but I am always open to concepts from which I can use. Points, that the keto people were making, were that our brain is made up of cholesterol and how fats/cholesterol are actually important in maintaining the composition of ones brain. They were also correlating the rise in dementia as well as ADHD diagnoses with the inception of the fat free and higher carb trends of 30+ years ago. So that was one direction.
The one from yesterday, was on Food Code. It is a podcast that I have recommended at times. They address more nutritional angles than some of the other we all have recommended. Yesterday's was: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/gluten-what-you-need-to-know/id1492747637?i=1000518979196 I recall them specifically mentioning children's behavioral challenges and how gluten could be worth investigating if dealing with this concern.
For content and me, I love the concept of seeing how nutrition can improve us. Year's ago we adopted Han Solo, and abandoned cat with "incurable" IBD. Within months of owning him he had a general vet, and IM vet, and an allergist/dermatologist. The position from the IM specialist (IBD was his area) was that Han needed colonoscopy, endoscopy, biopsy and would be heading for a life on steroids that would lead to diabetes over time, and its additional challenges. On the side, I had begun reading about feline nutrition. Long story short so, much to the IM vet's annoyance, I delayed his recommendations (note, vet was certain there was no nefarious condition like cancer so delay was not life threatening) and amazingly Han turned out to be a cat that diet was the cause of his IBD and once the inflammation was calmed down the symptoms abated (I can expound on this concept pretty broadly now). He is now 3 years symptom free. I am by no means comparing a cat to a child, but this was an opportunity for em to see what a nutritional change can do for a living being. I found it exciting.
Sorry for my long ramble. My heart goes out to you! Have a happy mother's day!5 -
@mshawski - the scale is just a number. What matters most is how your clothes fit, how you feel, your health. Clearly you’re making progress so please don’t let a number on a scale frustrate you. Now I’m going to ask you to remind me of this same thing some day when I complain about the scale not moving! As for your rant - never apologize for saying how you feel. You’ve got a lot on your plate and trying to do what’s best for your son. Give yourself some grace, take a deep breath and carry on.
@LazyBlondeChef - hooray to you for managing eating out - especially pizza! I find that pizza is a food I have trouble stopping after 1 or 2 slices. Well, GOOD pizza is hard to stop eating. The cardboard stuff, blech.
Saturday was exhausting but very rewarding. We attacked the compost pile in the garden. It hasn’t been breaking down the way it should so we made some changes. Then we decided to cut down a tree that had partially fallen over onto a fence and eventually would have taken out that entire section. We spent a couple hours cutting with the chain saw, clearing it up, hauling it to our firewood pile, then deciding as long as we had everything out, we should clear up some of the scrub trees that have grown too big.
I did all that AFTER a 3.5 mile run and a “strong” workout. So a big, “boy do my muscles hurt” yes to 20 minutes of exercise, yes to tracking, and yes to being under cals.

Much better! Thanks for asking. She's responding to treatment and her platelet count is way up. Still waiting on a serology report to find out what might have caused the problem, but that will take a few weeks.0 -

This is a 3 day post:
Thursday was an unplanned pass day. Worked late so didn’t get any exercise in. Pass day 1.
Friday was a planned pass day. Pas day 2.
Saturday was a 3 YES day and I mostly made up for the calories overage from Friday. Loooots of walking. My knees are feeling it.4 -

@SModa61 - not off putting at all, I appreciate the time you took to respond! I also think nutrition is an important component. We’ve noticed that artificial food coloring effects him, and artificial red specifically sends him into outer orbit. We try to avoid it whenever possible. I will def give that podcast a try. Thank you ❤️2 -

@mshawski So interesting that you have already witnessed a food component that impacts your son. I was thinking more on the subject and I remembered the book grain brain that I have on the shelf somewhere. Did a quick internet search instead (lazy of me), and I was surprised to see it come back with Dr. Pearlmutter mentioning fiber and omega-3's as potentially beneficial. Anyhow, hang in there. You son is lucky to have you!1 -
@biketheworld When we do pizza, it is straightforward. We order a 14" pizza. Hubby has 5 and I get 3 and there is nothing left. Then to make it work, I need to pre-track those three slices into my day so the rest of the day can work around it.1
