Tracking…. One of the three daily goals of the UAC. Why tracking? Here are my reasons.
For starters, tracking a single food allows me to see the “cost” of a given item and allows me to decide the impact of that cost in the context of my overall caloric budget. Tracking helps me to keep track of that budget and allows me to make informed decisions along the way. For me, pre-tracking is even more helpful as it takes the question of “what and I going to eat next” out of the equation.
Those are my reasons, but I know there are many more! How does tracking help you?11 -
4th June
Yes yes and yes.
Its been a long week but im enjoying eating at maintaince calories, its so much more food than im use to. Im still 1.2 kg away from goal weight but for the month of june im not focusing on weight loss. I hve switched to maintaince calories to try & stop the overeating. So far so good!! I can already feel less inflammation. Night my friends. Xox9 -
@smoda61 i also pretrack my diary the night before where possible Xox6

I joined the June challenge (my 4th month) and have yet to meet the goals. It’s been a flurry of activity in my life/house/job lately and my ADD is in full control!! AAAAGH!!! I feel like a pinball bouncing from one thing to the next with anxiety building as the days and weeks fly by. I’m getting things done (sometimes badly but we know that’s ok!!!) and constantly thinking about MFP and UAC. I’ve had some friend requests and supportive messages that I truly appreciate (and need!) that I haven’t followed up on (please, please forgive me!!)
So…… my goals for June are… take 10-20 minutes to log in, read other’s posts, and show my support to this awesome UAC team. Stay with it daily even if I don’t log everything and close out my food diary. I am certainly getting 20 minutes of exercise daily between household chores, gardening, walking the dog, swimming (Yay! Pool is open, sparkling and crisp … 65 degrees!!) And if I get 3 days a week of meeting UAC goals, as opposed to only 3 pass days a month, this will be a major accomplishment for me at this point. I’m building good habits, planning as best I can, weighing myself daily (the scale is moving downward) and NOT GIVING UP.
Bless you all as you stay well and focused and keep up the good work!!
And thank you for inspiring me to do the best I can

4th June
3 x Yes.
Exercise: Did a 45 minute fairly fast walk this morning, then added another 15 minutes early afternoon and another 20 tonight.
Calories: Yes, stayed under. Fridge and freezer slowly emptying.
Tracking: Yes, logged everything. Slightly more protein than carbs today! Not tracking for me would be like flying blind: I'd have no idea where I was going or how to get there, wherever that might be ...
Played the piano for a bit, still not really in the right frame of mind to enjoy it, but it is a bit like this challenge: stick at it and it'll become part of you...

Exercise: Yes

Even though I met my goal for the day I didn't put a lot of effort into my fitness nor did I eat well. As they say, tomorrow is another day to be better.8 -

I’m home now, and tomorrow I will be back to normal routines.
I used 2 pass days while I was away, mainly because it is so difficult to estimate meals I haven’t prepared myself. Hotel food doesn’t have labels!
@SModa61 asked “How does tracking help you?” My answer is clear – if I don’t log/track my food I would soon get into bad habits such as snacking and kidding myself on portion sizing. Going on holiday and skipping a couple of days doesn’t matter, especially now that I am maintaining, but it needs to become a habit. . The other big reason to track is to specifically track my protein and fibre intake and my calcium. (Calcium is difficult as so many entries don’t have calcium stated even when it’s obvious it contains calcium eg cheese and yogurt)
So my report:
Exercise – yes, walking. (By the way, my average steps over the last 5 days has been over 15,000 per day)
Tracking – yes
Calories – yes
2 pass days used so far.

I have to pre-track any meals to ensure I'm hitting my macros and staying in ketosis. I have a lot of go-to meals now to choose from that I know from having tracked in the past meet all my requirements. Even for eating out. That allows me to be flexible. Whenever I find myself eating out someplace new, I track afterwards the best I can, or right there while looking at the menu if possible. It's not too hard to keep the macro proportions right (especially keeping carbs down), in those cases the trick is how many calories?
June 4 - 3 yes day
✅ - Exercise 20+ Minutes
✅ - Calories within budget
✅ - Tracked every detail I consumed
0/3 Pass Days Used
However, as I suspected that strength workout wasn't able to get fit in.
Everything went rather well prior to my daughters dentist appt. I prepared quick, portable meals just to ensure I could eat on time without any worries. We were able to keep her away from all food and drink after 9am. I was even planning on getting a walk in while the procedure was underway.
In the end the appointment had to be rescheduled though due to a mix-up in the timing for her last food and drink.
So we're all at home now, kids are eating, and getting ready to wind down our day. I guess we get to try this all again in the future.
Personal Challenges Met: 3/4 days (4th)
✅ - Net Carbs 30g or less (23g)
✅ - Protein 180g or more (184g)
✅ - Intermittent Fasted (20 hrs)
❎ - All Scheduled Workouts Completed? (2/3)- 27 mins Yoga
- 45 min Run
- MISSED - Strength
ETA - While I could have "unscheduled" that workout due to conflicts, which I considered doing yesterday, I kept remembering that I could probably still find a way. Like a quote that goes, "While I can not control the direction the wind blows, I can always adjust my sails".
So I set an alarm for 4:30am. That would allow me time to do it all before all of these food/drink/dentist activities.
At 1:30am I woke for a biological reason and decided to cancel that alarm.
So it was in reality a conscious miss and could have happened.7 -

Well, June is off to a rough start. My son decided to come home for the week--today is his 24th birthday, and he starts a terrific internship next Monday, so we've had a lot to celebrate. But my workout room is also his former bedroom, so . . . Between eating celebratory food and not exercising, I am well and truly off the wagon. (I've been tracking calories, but half-heartedly.)
So, June 2-4 were pass days. Tomorrow, June 5th, I lace up my walking shoes and get myself back on track. Not ready to throw in the towel on my winner's circle goal quite yet, though I've made it harder for myself than it had to be.11 -

Walked 1, ran 3. Friday’s I normally run 5, but that humidity 🥵. 89%. It was killer.
Pizza for dinner tonight, as we ended up picking up one of my BFFs 10 year old from school and hanging out with him while they had a palliative care convo with the hospital about her mom. 💔 So…the boy likes pizza and video games so he got pizza and video games. I worked it into my day though, and had 2 whole calories to spare.
Tomorrow will be an intentional pass day because hubby and I are doing date night, and he picked the restaurant based on what he knows I enjoy eating. Lol. The dessert menu looks incredible, but the biggest danger…there is sweet and spicy hummus on the menu. Sweet and spicy hummus. Yup. Pass day. My goal for tomorrow is to have a good session with my personal trainer and keep the rest of the day on track, so I only go over on dinner and in the end it’s not all that bad.10 -
Yesterday was a Pass Day. By not traveling, we have focused on getting our home of 28 years updated to sell. Today we met with 7 different service providers.
Today was a UAC on target day, despite the distractions.
A day without tracking is day without guardrails.
Exercise: walking 47 minutes and farm chores 28 minutes plus lots more activity

@SModa61 - The tracking here on MFP has been an eye-opener for me. I have tried written food journals in the past, but I have not been good about weighing items or considering portion sizes before I write the food item down. Portion sizes are my biggest issue. The MFP database and system is making me very conscious of just not what I eat but how much, and my actual caloric intake.

@donna25trinity - in the words of Heather - “I am loving what you’re saying!” Lol I know you love her as much as I do.
@MizSpiffy - instead of focusing on what you haven’t done (like meeting the 3 UAC goals), focus on what you have accomplished. Or - don’t worry about all 3 goals. Pick one and set a goal of making that one thing all month. If thats an improvement in your life and more realistic, then just do that. Like @MadisonMolly2017 keeps saying...baby steps.
Since my husband does all the cooking, pre-tracking isn’t really doable. However, when I get home from work and see what he’s making, I do usually check calories before eating so I can control portion sizes and stay within limits. I love love love having my calorie loss set at 1/2 lb per week. I try to end the day with a couple hundred calories left, but it also means I never feel deprived.
