What aspect of your health/fitness/weight journey do you wish you had learned sooner?
Happy Hump Day all!

I always forget to answer the daily questions when I check in, so today I thought I’d share the biggie for me now - and I’ll check in with my daily yeses later 😊
It took me way, way, way to long to learn that prioritizing time for me to workout and prioritizing how I wanted to eat wasn’t me being selfish - it was basic self care and I wasn’t doing my family any favors by always putting my health last.10 -
I wish I discovered a joy of running earlier.. and not when I was 48 already. There was an article recently about a 91 years "old" lady who is still running- She is going now to crack a record in 1500m run of some Canadian. She says that then she will "leave elite sport" and continue running only for her pleasure AND she started running also at 48. I LOVE IT.

I wish i had learned the weight and calorie distrinution of each food, this tracking thing is extremely eye opening, cuz my stomach doesnt really care about the extras i was having as much as my eyes.
So be careful of those eyes, they tricky 😑😑😑😑14 -
I woke up sore and tired so decided to skip gym but then it was such a beautiful day that I went for a sunrise beachfront run. Then a crazy morning at work and off to coach kids. I made the decision that I just didn’t have enough energy for Jiu Jitsu so went home to relax a bit and eat (I hadn’t been able to eat during the busy work morning so didn’t get enough fuel by the time I had to leave, which contributed to my tiredness) before community group. Definitely meet the exercise goal even without Jiu Jitsu.
Good food choices by sticking with my plan and even with the meal I nearly skipped to train I’m still way under budget.
The scale is being weird and bouncing up and down from one day to the next so I’m just waiting for it to stabilise a bit.
A cute picture of my puppy for everyone!

I agree with @mshawski , learning to make time for yourself, is so important and so difficult, especially when you have a young family.

✅ - Exercise 20+ Minutes
✅ - Calories within budget
✅ - Tracked every detail I consumed
0/3 Pass Days Used
Personal Challenges Met: 8/9 days (4th)
✅ - Net Carbs 30g or less (22g)
✅ - Protein 180g or more (187g)
✅ - Intermittent Fasted (19 hrs)
✅ - All Scheduled Workouts Completed? (4/3)- 5 mins Yoga
- 45 min Run
- 46 mins Strength (DB Squats, Banded Hip Abductors, Banded Leg Adductors, Weighted Calf Raises)
- (bonus) 51 min Walk
My lesson I wish I had learned is basically what @mshawski said. In my case I'm not sure I avoided taking care of myself because I thought it would be selfish so much as I seemed I could better use that time and energy on all of the others in my life. That only changed when I reached the point that my health was so rapidly deteriorating that I had to choose if I wanted to be around for those people for much longer into the future. The choice was easy then. It's a shame it had to take that long.
ETA - I guess that's the same as thinking taking care of myself was selfish. Not sure. I guess I was trying to justify it as being selfless. Sounds better than selfish. But the same either way I suppose.8 -

Yes yes and yes. We still continue to eat out for dinner this was our 5th day but something we never usually do so im not feeling guilty about it. (Ill get back to cooking today) A steak sandwich and cake isnt the healthiest choice but hubby is off from work atm and being a stay at home mum the thought of not cooking dinner is just bliss. Ha ha. Also i hve been using this experince to get Comfortable with eating out and actually ordering wat a want instead of a salad. This has def made those fun foods seem less special so i hvent felt the need to overeat at home. I hve not had an overeating day since the 28th of May. Yayyyy!!!!I went from daily over eating to weekly and only once did i do fortnightly so hoping to make it to fortnightly then even monthly! Fingers crossed!
So for me i wish i knew not to deprive myself, not to cut out food groups for weight loss, not to turn to food wen feeling emotions and the importance of tracking calories Xo9 -

My run didn’t happen today as there was a massive thunderstorm and running in lighting and hail seemed unappealing so I decided to actually do yoga for once. I didn’t manage my calories for the beginning part of the day with such a small calorie burn in mind, so I think I’m going to bed hungry tonight, but overall I think it was a good move. I will just drink green tea until I’m not hungry anymore. I am interested to see if adding yoga in as a rest day, and bringing a rest day back into my routine, helps the scale start moving again. Really at this point I just want something to help it start moving again. Lol. You all must be so tired of my complaining about this plateau thing by now, I’m sorry. Lol. ☹️10 -
I wish I had learned that creating too large a calorie deficit might help you lose more weight the first week or so, but it’s not sustainable and ultimately leads to giving up.

Yes x 3.
I gained 50 lbs in a year when prescribed a medication. My sister finally said she knew other people that were on it and gained a lot of weight also. I wish I had known that and asked for a different medication.10 -

To answer today’s question I wish I had read food labels sooner than I did, I wish I had been more focused on me and not so much on others but I can say that my life has been kind to me I have whatever exercise equipment I may like within reason! A supportive family and friends who encourage me even on not so great days. I wish at times for a redo do you? Perhaps the most important thing I learned was is it did not go on overnight so be patient and persistent.
I tracked logged did core exercises and finished the day with my guitar.11 -
@mshawski I upped my daily calorie intake for a few days then dropped it back the scale moved!! I now do this every few weeks to keep my body guessing good luck with the yoga4

I agree with @Bovaryoo - I wish I'd known that once I lost the weight (on all my previous dieting attempts!) that I would need to continue to monitor (count calories) to keep the weight off!7 -
The most important lesson that I ever learned was taught by Weight Watchers. If I exercised, then I could earn more calories.
But, it was not until much later that I learned that I cannot solve a food portion bad habit by an exercising good habit.6 -
Tracking: good
Calories and portions: good
Exercise: walking more than 20 minutes.
No feeling healthy today.9 -
June 9:
Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? Yes, 60 minute walk in high humidity. (That should count for extra minutes, right?!)
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? Yes!
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank? Yes
I wish I would have learned one of the mantras that was recently posted here: you can't exercise away a bad diet.
I know I haven't shared anything personal yet, but this is my weight journey: I was super active in both competitive dance and sports all the way through college. Into my mid-30's, I stayed active, fit, and at healthy (and sometimes below healthy) weights. Though I never overate, I never thought about what I ate. At 35, an illness followed by an accident changed the types of exercise I could do for a long period, and I began overeating. When I recovered, I exercised with a vengeance, lost all the weight, but injured myself again. And so began what is now 6 years of yo-yo'ing. For the first time, I am exercising in moderation and REALLY paying attention to what I eat and how much I eat.12 -

Reporting in. So this evening, during my recent difficult "9 pm" habit, I popper a bag of microwave popcorn and drank club soda mixed with diet cran-mango drink. Solidly under and almost 4 miles walk today. So yes for today. So 4 pass, 5 non-pass. argh BUT I am doing well on my apple rings, out of the 9 I have only missed 1. Aiming for 27 out of 30 for June.8

I was doing really well today--staying on track with calories, exercising when I planned to. But then my husband suggested going out for dinner, for the first time since before the pandemic, and I just couldn't say no. Two fish tacos and a gigantic margarita later, it's pass day #4.
As others have said, I wish I'd learned earlier how much I actually enjoy running. I can't do it anymore, thanks to a bad knee, but knowing how much I love an endorphin high sometimes makes it easier to convince myself to exercise.8 -
@_JeffreyD_ Keep at it! We're all rooting for you!4
