I have a question for those of you, such as Patrice, who are at their goal weight, or of others who are close. I would ask it in another forum, but have had more than one person be really rude to me elsewhere, so I am not venturing out there ever again!
Anyway, here's my question: According to online calculators, I figure I am about 20 pounds from my ideal weight, but I honestly think that I must be a lot further than 20 pounds from what I should weigh. That loose skin is not just loose skin, if you catch my drift. Skin alone just isn't that thick! I see I still haven't got to my question. Sorry. When y'all had only 20 pounds to go, did it FEEL and LOOK as though you had only 20 pounds to go? Is there suddenly going to be some miraculous transformation and one day I will wake up and say "holy crap, I made it, I'm slim"? I've googled pictures of people who are 20 pounds overweight and I am sure that I am much fatter.
Or are we all (well maybe not all of us, lucky you, but possibly me) just overly critical of how we look? I'll be 66 on Thursday. I am going to have loose skin, esp as I lost the weight pretty fast (relatively speaking). As a vegan, I did not take collagen but I ate fields of vegetables and trees of fruit. Cosmetic surgery is completely out of the question, as I'd honestly rather do any of 100 different things with the money!
Was I just being unrealistic in thinking that I'd look great when I reached my destination weight? Is this the ultimate cosmic joke? Oh don't be thinking that I have grocery bags of skin flapping around because I don't. The skin on my upper arms is a tad ropey and I won't be going sleeveless. My neck has looked better. And I still have the spare tire, but it's not nearly as big as it used to be (the Pillsbury dough boy would still find me as sexy as a dinner roll though)
Sorry, tough question! But if anybody has an answer, I'd love to hear it! Were you happy with what you saw when you reached your goal weight?
I will keep at it and have a critical appraisal when I hit my goal. Maybe pictures. I am not a person to take selfies! I will most likely take 20 selfies and reject them all...don't worry, nothing would be more revealing than me in a t-shirt and running tights, front view, haha!2 -
@chublet25 - I am relatively new to the group and only recently achieved my goal weight; so, I’ll do my best to answer your question, with the caveat that others will likely have better insights and recommendations for you. One group that I’d suggest you check in with is the GOAL ZONE group of F2F members who have been maintaining their goal weight for more time than I have.
Online Calculator for Gauging Ideal Weight
Currently, I weigh just under 125 pounds and I consider that about my ideal weight. The BMI calculator says that 145 is the highest weight for a ‘normal’ BMI at my height — about 5 feet, 4 inches. I started at 168 pounds and my most rewarding milestone was getting to 145 pounds, which helped me feel as though I was getting healthy. Even though I’ve never had high cholesterol or high blood pressure, I worried that I might develop higher risk if I stayed overweight as I aged. I was very happy with my progress - and it was motivating - BUT, I was still not completely satisfied with how I looked. This is where I think the topic becomes trickier because we are moving from a conversation about health & weight versus weight & body image. When y'all had only 20 pounds to go, did it FEEL and LOOK as though you had only 20 pounds to go?
Personally, at 145 pounds - or 20 pounds left to reach my goal weight - I was starting to feel better because I could stand longer while cooking, for example, and I fit into some clothes that had felt tight previously - but I knew I could look better. This is a point that feels highly subjective because 125-135 was a much more natural weight for me throughout my life. We all have different cultural, physiological, and psychological influences that shape our body images and identities. I could add a lot of personal information here but the main point is that I was always active and didn’t have to worry too much about the nutrition side of the equation — until I did! Eventual, my weight crept up slowly over the years until the pandemic caused me to step back and assess my health. Were you happy with what you saw when you reached your goal weight?
At about 135 pounds, I think I was generally happy with what I saw in the mirror, except for the extra skin under my arms and the way my loose skin hung down when I was in the plank position. I felt I could live comfortably at 135 pounds, which was 10 pounds over my target. Now that I’m at my goal weight, I’m much happier with the muscle definition that is starting to show up. I have better shape to my arms, legs and abdomen. With that said, I’m always impressed by people who are confident in their body at higher weights. I feel more confident in my own skin these days - and feel great in my clothes - but I’ll always admire the women in Hawaii who rock a bikini at any weight because of the energy and life they exude.
Other People Have Noticed the Last 10 Pounds
People didn’t comment much on my weight loss when I reached the ‘normal’ BMI because I had always been somewhat fit, even when overweight. So, while I was thrilled with that particular milestone from a medical standpoint, my shape wasn’t much different … though it was smaller than before. Now, my rowing friends and former colleagues have made comments that they almost didn’t recognize me because I look much fitter. I still have some loose skin in the plank position, but I’ve heard it can take up to two years to tighten, so I’m interested to see what happens. When I was younger, my bellybutton was tight and vertical - and now there is a little flap and it’s horizontal - but nobody would know the difference but me. So, I’m happy with the overall changes I see.
Although in some ways, I think my face seems a bit older looking (especially since I spend a lot of time outdoors), it still looks better to me than the slightly bloated image on my drivers license. I’m 55 and much of the damage was done in my younger days enjoying days at the beach in Boston. I’m trying to be diligent about sunscreen - and I always wear a hat - but I still struggle to remember my moisturizer. Damn! There are so many essential habits to build!!
I feel as though I’ll always be ‘a work in progress’ but I’ve learned not to let perfect get in the way of good enough. I’m not a selfie person either, and have only taken a few in my life. One of them is my profile picture, taken in May, when I was about 150 pounds and just above the normal BMI range. I took another one when I reached my goal weight so it’s posted in the ‘friends’ section. I think we are already connected as friends but just let me know if you want me to add it here. I hope I answered your question in this long-winded response. My apologies for the length. I’ll look forward to reading other responses and wish you the best. You are doing great!! 🙌 🤩 🙌5 -

Hello everyone
Thank you for having me in the group
I'm 50 and live in UK. I joined F2F early in the year but dropped out due to issues in personal and work life.
I eat relatively healthy but have problem with the amount of food I eat! Currently I'm on blood pressure medication and want to lose weight and get healthy so I can come off the meds.

I just finished a seven day maintenance week. I'd set my goal from losing 2 pounds a week to a half pound a week. And...I lost .4 pounds. Pretty close. My calories went from 1200 per day to 1740. My exercise plan remained on track and I still logged every day. It was nice to have those extra calories and I didn't stress so much about staying under, like I do at the lower goal. I think the biggest thing I learned is that I can do maintenance...at least for a week. I can see how life gets busy and my mind moves away from being so strict tracking. That's when I'll be in the danger zone long term. It was a good experiment but I'm really happy to be back at it. I'm hoping to be at or near 200 pounds by the beginning of 2022. Onward and downward!

-Sigh- I really actually expected a loss this week. Just hovering around the same.4 -
@chublet25
I am really glad you posted this because it can be awkward to talk about! While I didn't reach my goal weight, when I started out here back in 2015 I looked forward to looking much better on top of feeling better overall. I got down to 188ish at one point - and I was disappointed - because I still had trouble spots that I seriously thought would go away by then. I also did NOT drop a size. I was always an XL no matter what I did. This is part of the reason I regained, I'm pretty sure... I just expected being able to fit into my old winter coat and such that I used to fit. Hard to believe I once did. I am always thinking how much does it take to drop one size? Just one? Now I have to re-lose and get back there and keep losing to find out. Frustrating, but never give up!3 -
How is everyone doing this week? Staying away from the candy jars?
LOL no. So much chocolate going down, and today was one of those days when the hunger never stops.
I had another checkup at the maternity clinic today (they’re weekly now) and it seems that I consistently fluctuate between gaining a LOT and maintaining every other checkup. My total gain is now about 42lbs until date, and I can’t wait for that to start coming off. Baby was estimated about 7lbs today, and at 0.5 pound growth per week I’m hoping she’ll come out soon.

@PatriceFitnessPal
Wow, what a wonderful, thoughtful, inspiring reply! I cannot thank you enough for going to so much trouble and effort!
It made me feel a lot better by many of the things that you admitted to feeling about yourself. I too feel as though I am really just STARTING. I don't know what to call the weight I lost before - preamble (ha) to the main event perhaps. I suppose the toughest part is still ahead, these last 20 (or possibly 25) pounds. But I feel that I am up to it.
I have lost weight before but not kept it off (obviously). But something's different this time around. One day I just decided to go for it and I am totally determined. This time has a finality about it. I am done messing around.
Also, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that 20-25 pounds is still a fair amount of weight to lose, and it's now smeared around a smaller body, so it's going to be spread thicker than that first 25 pounds I lost (I started at 225). It's simple geometry! That first 25 pounds was honestly not even noticeable amongst all of its fat little friends. I know that this isn't the case for some people. I read about some people who notice a difference in their appearance straight away, and other people notice it too. I think I just slowly got smaller all over at the same rate so I was left wondering if my scales were just messing with my mind.
I do admire people who rock whatever weight they are, but being overweight just made me feel ashamed and I realize that that is unhealthy of me and I truly envy those of you who are confident about yourselves. And I am still too embarrassed to jog in front of anybody. But when I see people my weight or more jogging, I mentally cheer them on. I just assume people would laugh at me. Fat me dressed very conservatively, and I hid in my clothes. When I see anybody, regardless of their weight, wearing awesome striking clothes, I just admire them. And probably others do this too. But even now, just tucking my shirt in is pretty wild for me!
I hit the healthy weight borderline at 149.5 (I'm 146 now) so that was a happy happy milestone. I also think that I look older than I looked when I started - but at least I have cheekbones now and fewer chins!
And I really didn't think that I'd look great at the end, just SLIMMER and in better shape. I mean it's still me! I'm not expecting a miracle, not at 66 years of age! And I'm ok with that.
Thank you again, so much for such a wonderful caring reply. I am really touched and you have helped me so much and given me a lot to think about.
Pat

@chublet/ Pat, I agree that it’s inspiring to see people of all shapes and sizes wearing striking outfits. I only seem to shop on vacation or when buying a gift for someone else so I never get past shopping for the basics. Let’s all go wild this week … by tuck in our shirts! 😂🤣😂

I'm really pleased with this weeks loss but I'm really bad at consistency so that's my aim for this week.
I've had a stressful week as I do a lot of care for my elderly mum and she's had a difficult time healthwise so I haven't had time or energy to overeat so going to keep the focus on my eating but also to find time for myself. I do enjoy gardening, particularly growing plants from seed so going to get out and tidy the garden at the weekend and do some seed sowing for my hardy annuals - besides it's hard to snaffle with muddy hands!
Hope everyone's had a great week.6
