Those of us in the northern hemisphere are heading into the dark days of winter. Although it's tempting to snuggle in with either a good book or our favourite streaming site, try to remember what exercise can do for us.
A daily workout releases feel-good, de-stress brain chemicals giving us a break from the daily grind.
We know that after exercise, the brain releases the chemicals serotonin and dopamine, which can help to reduce anxiety and depression while boosting wellbeing.
If youβre lucky enough to get some exercise outside in the sunshine, it helps our body get some Vitamin D which can increase positivity and make us feel happier.
Just think, prioritizing daily exercise could change our whole outlook on those long days of Winter!

Exercise - yes 20 minutes yoga and a 20 minute walk
Tracking -kind of
Calories - not really
My husband cooked a hotch potch dinner of whatever he found in the fridge, thrown together with chorizo and roasted, very nice but next to impossible to track. Plus I had red wine with my dinner tonight, long day at work and I just wanted to unwind.
@Jana_2020 i totally agree about exercise in winter - and I make it a priority to get outdoors in sunlight in winter if I can each day. I took a walk at lunchtime today even though I was a bit swamped work wise for that exact reason. Apparently itβs really important for our circadian rhythm / quality of sleep to get natural light early in the day.
@jamcnewman thank you for the explanation about kittens - love it. And to be honest my mind is now boggling at what an intense kitten might be.5 -
5th November 2021
* 40 min weights session
* Just under calories. Today was the 1st time we were allowed out of covid lock down in months so went out for a lovely dinner. I was still able to come home to eat my last piece of cake but I had to hve less to fit it in. Great news is no grazing today.
* Tracked every BLT.
*1 pass so far 4th Nov.
Night guy's and great post @Jana_2020 I tots agree. Xo

Great opener today @Jana_2020 π₯° Those two images were perfectly chosen! I want to be the bottom image β especially at the times when I really feel like the top. Working on consistency to help make this walking habit stick β and doing it in daylight is such a bonus when it can be coordinated.
I live north of the 49th parallel & in a province that doesnβt change clocks with the seasons. It sure gets dark early here now (sunset at 5:25 pm) so there are also safety aspects to doing the long walk earlier rather than later. By safety, I mostly mean tripping in the dark (and ending on my hands and knees on the sidewalk with a 65 pound puppy jumping all over me thinking this is the best thing that ever happened). π₯³
Thanks again for your post!

Yes a very insightful opener. I have a LOT more energy when I workout in the morning. And right now it is dark before work so I think it's over before I even notice it.

Got my Moderna booster yesterday. So far not as much reaction as the Pfizer #2 - no fever 24 hrs in. My shoulder does have a welt on it the size of a lemon so I look like I have really been working out in one arm.... But it's not extremely painful and I think due more to the technique of the shot giver than the actual vaccine. Unless of course it's all stuck in my shoulder right now... hmmmmm9 -
@Jana_2020 This is so true! I know getting the same quality of outdoor exercise in this winter will be tough, but I'll feel so much better for it when I can make it happen!5

Exercised?: Yes. In addition to my 5 push-ups for the date, I did an extra 2 to make up for a bad day yesterday. @WhatMeRunning suggested it, so thank you! I got a 35 min walk in as well (itβs dark by 4pm now though).

Bonfire Night tonight β fireworks going on all round!
Exercise? Yes, bike ride and cardio workouts
Tracked? Yes, every BLT
Calories? Yes, well under.
I try to get out on my bike every day even when itβs cold β but not when itβs icy or snowy, and Iβm not happy in the rain either. In the first lockdown in 2020 I did a lot of walking round my garden because we werenβt supposed to leave the house more than once a day. 40 brisk circuits of the garden did wonders for my mental health.4 -
@jamcnewman I just love puppy enthusiasm π₯° but yes you must be careful! π
After a year of postponing tripsβ¦ weβre in Amsterdam this weekend. I ate at maintenance yesterday as planned and Iβm finding today I havenβt eaten much at all. Iβm just not hungry. I had 1/2 of my breakfast, missed lunch because we were travelling and then had soup for dinner and shared a small cheese platter. It was all super tasty but I felt I didnβt even need dinner. So odd! We also walked loads today which was nice.

Today's exercise was a strength routine (3 sets of dumbbell row, dumbbell overhead press, dumbbell bicep curl)
Getting one full set of quality athletic winter gear (think layers) is more than worth the cost, in my opinion. In case it helps, starting from my normal warm weather running gear of running shoes, running socks, running shorts and running shirts, my winter running gear is:
(all temps in Fahrenheit)
32 to upper 40s - add thin gloves and switch to a long sleeve running shirt.
Upper teens to 32 - as above but add a running beanie to cover head and ears and a base leggings layer under shorts (only include shorts since I'm male and feel uncomfortable running around in just tights down below).
Single digits to lower teens - add merino wool socks, switch to pants to wear over leggings, switch to thick gloves, add a hoodie
Sub zero - no experience there, sorry, rarely gets that cold here except as an overnight low, and is my excuse to finally say it's too dang cold to run if it's still that cold in the afternoon!
ETA - And that only applies to running, really. Walking you have to bundle up a lot warmer. Cycling I have no advice for, sorry.

One other thing about outdoor winter exercise is to plan your routes in case something happens so you can safely and quickly bail to a warm and dry location. As amazingly beautiful and serene winter time trails can be, if something happens in a somewhat remote spot (injury, weather, unexpected other thing) your body can get all too cold all too quickly. Just be smart.7

A good day spin this evening 18 minutes 4.8 miles I pushed a did some standing spin not something I always do because of my knees. Did some holiday shopping and walked the mall this got me well over 20 minutes of exercise! Tracked and logged.6

Ugh, Dark days of winter. I hate the cold and the lack of sunlight really takes a toll on me. I can already feel a shift in my mood, and it is so much harder to get motivated to exercise. However, I am committed to keep it going. I am trying to come up with some new ideas and started a 30 day Darebee challenge to mix things up.

Exercise: 35 mins on the stationary bike plus total of 4645 steps.
Logged: every thing in (some how didn't get around to eating lunch, so heavier-cal home-assembled pizza is now saved as a "meal" and I still had calorie room for a later evening snack of air-popped popcorn (no oil, butter or any other topping)
Within Goal: didn't even touch the exercise calories earned.
In the darker days of winter, I do more of my walking exercise inside with my Wii Walk It Out game and my mini-trampoline. It is always whatever time I care to set The Magic Clock, and mid-Spring (tulip fields and cherry trees in bloom) Been doing so for more than 9 years now. And there is the exercise bike available, for when I want to burn more calories in a shorter timeframe. It is in front of a rec room tv with a settop box that can play Netflix or YouTube or DVDs.7 -

I agree with @bradkcrew about the dark days of winter. Although I don't mind the cold as much as the lack of sunshine. I also hate that it gets dark so early... I agree that it's much harder to get motivated to exercise, but I bought a treadmill last winter, and a mini trampoline. I also ordered one of these new-fangled hula hoops from Amazon that's supposed to be here tmrw! π I like having some options for indoor activities when the weather turns nasty! I'm also committed to keeping this weight off over the winter.... whatever it takes!

Yes, yes, and yes amazingly today.
Exercise was walking to and from the hotel and the restaurant. Managed to close all my Apple rings. We went to a Peruvian seafood place and they were nice small little plates. Fun!5 -
