This discussion is for those of us who need to take a moment every day and reflect on what is working and what is not working.
I will try to post every day and share anything that I think is helpful along with my activity of the day. I invite you to do the same! Everyone is different but we can learn new tips from each other.
I am 64 years old and barely 5'3". I have lost 30 lbs through using MyFitnessPal.
Over time I gained 12 lb back and I have lost it since February 22nd of this year. I wish I could blame Covid but it's simply because I stopped tracking and weighing.
My previous discussion was called March 1st through May 31st Challenge. Everything that I've ever learned about weight loss has been documented in that discussion, along with some very helpful ideas from people who added to it.
I hope to see some old and new friends here.

Hi! Thanks for the new discussion. Perfect timing.
I’ll soon be 58, 5’3, and weighed in today at 127.8. Reached my smallest (since junior high) last year at 112.4 - was only trying to get to 125 but kept going. I gained the weight back after weeks at a time having reunited with husband (was taking care of elderly parents out of state).
Soooo - with the parents and the accompanying stress - I can lose the weight. Once with hubby though, it becomes easier to share “treats” with him - wine, pizza, ice cream - so here I am - hoping to get back to maintenance of 115-118. Hubby’s away for two weeks, so I’m hoping to achieve what I can while he’s away and be ready to continue once he’s back!
I track and log daily, use Happy Scale, try to get in 10l steps daily and enjoy a combo of kettlebells, step aerobics, kickboxing, trx and strength training.
Ready to smash my goals and stay there!!💪💪0 -
Hi. @CeeBeeSlim! It is an inspirational plan. I think I'm going to try weights again because I got the advice of a doctor I trust.
Maybe you can slyly steer your hubby into some other food choices that he will also enjoy. Yesterday I took my sister to lunch and I suggested we get salads. It was so tempting to get a sandwich instead but we stuck with the plan and we both enjoyed it a lot.
She had just gone to the doctor and asked for physical therapy, so I asked her how I could help support her.
She asked me for some accountability support because she wants to exercise but she has a lot of excuses why she can't. She suggested that I call her everyday at 11:00 a.m. so she has definitely asked for it!!!
Today it is raining hard and I guess I will try to walk the dogs if it's cooler once it has stopped. It is not a yoga day so the goal is to practice my balancing exercises and my strength exercises with the yoga blocks.

@zenobia9777 Hello! Any reason you stopped strength training? Injury?
128.2 today. Sore from exercise yesterday. Water weight I’m sure.
Hope we all - including your sister - can stick to our goals!
A very very stressful eldercare morning led me to say yes to an offer from a cousin to buy some takeout chicken - fried, with the fixins, and the biscuits, and the sweet tea. Lordy!I shouldn’t have even said yes, I. Will. Not. Eat. It. So - I made a very tasty protein smoothie and escaped the temptation. 👏👏
Off to do my Reebok step video!0 -
I walked the dogs 50 minutes tonight, but I got focused on household stuff and never worked on yoga.
@CeeBeeSlim I stopped the weights because I had bad sciatica from a slipped disc. Since it seems to have stabilized, I think I can cautiously try out some moves.
Wow. You are so strong! I would have struggled with the chicken dinner temptation.
Mary (sister,) checked out the swim schedule today!

I did a lot of housework and then walked the dogs for about 20 minutes Going to yoga.
Tomorrow I'm starting a two week fitness challenge through my studio. It should be interesting!0 -
Off on another road trip. Left early so didn’t weigh in today. Got in almost 14k steps yesterday. Looking forward to hearing more about your fitness challenge. These trips to the southern part of the us makes it hard to stay on track! Ugh! Eyes on the prize tho. Eyes on the prize…🏋️♂️0

Have fun! Even 7-Elevens are starting to have better food choices0

As the saying goes, “my nerves are being worked!” No a/c, list goes on, but it really doesn’t matter what’s on the list of complaints - it’s my response to them. So - I can either look lustfully at the Dairy Queen or get some spinach for a smoothie. It’s hard! 😫. I’ll start with some cold water and try to for for a walk!0
-
A spinach smoothie sounds very refreshing.
At the yoga studio today I was told that kombucha will really cut your appetite. The brand that they recommended was called Synergy.
I made my diary public because I have to be super accountable the next two weeks with my two week challenge. On Monday I start the 3 day juice cleanse. However, it's not exclusively juice because you also have a protein and small salad for 3 days.
I also signed up for one hot yoga class, three cardio classes and one yoga fusion.
Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger!
They used an app called arborleaf scale which connected to their weight scale and provided all kinds of information about my body condition. There is a disclaimer, but it was kind of amazing considering all the different categories that they were tracking.
I also learned about collagen peptides. It is a protein that has no soy, no GMOs, no gluten, no dairy, and no added sugar. My body is not going to know how to deal with the loss of all those processed food chemicals!!!
I am supposed to avoid caffeine so I might try to give up my coffee habit which I don't think is particularly good for me anyway.
I did not walk the dogs or do any exercise today so I need to think about that. It is always hard to get myself to do things once the morning is over.0 -
Wow. That’s sounds great! I recall tasting kombucha once - but didn’t take to it. It’s time for brass tacks tho so when I’m off to the supermarket I will get some! Would you mind sharing the challenge details? I feel I’m at crossroads.
I drink one cup of coffee in the morning and that’s it.
The only thing I know about collagen is related to skin care!
The classes sound great! Sounds like after two weeks you’re going to feel renewed!0 -
@CeeBeeSlim , I am still studying the handout to see what we will be doing.
I think it's pretty straightforward and the main thing is you really cut the calories and increase the exercise in a short-term. But you aren't supposed to starve yourself. I think of it as a modified fast.

May 22 122.2
May 29 122.2.
June 5 121.4
Since I haven't been logging and I will start doing that again tomorrow, I don't have a good feel for how I did this week.
Basically I think I am doing the small breakfast and lunch and then the regular dinner. By small I mean probably under 300 calories and then no snacking.
Of course that is going to change for the next 2 weeks.
Today I'm going to prepare my fresh juices, and I will try to post a recipe.
The two week plan is 12 pages so I can't really summarize very well.
If I'm diligent about my food and exercise log then you can see what I am actually doing. And I will try to say if I go off the plan.
Off to walk the dogs at a brisk pace!!!0 -
Smoothie recipe for juice cleanse
5 oz spinach
3 oz banana
3 oz pineapple
The only other additions are spices such as cinnamon or turmeric to your liking.
This is all by weight so it ends up being a lot of spinach.

128.2 today. Hard to reach my daily 10k steps goal while vacationing with parents. Lots of drop-bys from kin folk who like to porch - so I kinda have to stick around. Just makes me more aggressive in reaching nutrition goals.
Thanks for the details on the plan and smoothie.
Will try to stick with a similar approach for the next two weeks!! 🤞🤞0 -
I added everything for today to my diary ahead of time. I don't know how to put in my workout routine because it is a combination of weights and yoga. I'm going today at 10:00 and I did not walk the dogs because I was making smoothies.
I forgot to add that you should cover all those vegetables and fruits with water and then mix it up so you're drinking a big glass! That recipe actually makes two servings.
Smoothie recipe for juice cleanse (2 servings)
5 oz spinach
3 oz banana
3 oz pineapple
The only other additions are spices such as cinnamon or turmeric to your liking.
This is all by weight so it ends up being a lot of spinach.

@CeeBeeSlim I don't know if I'm going to regret this 3-day juice cleanse thing. It is very low calorie. I'm not going to recommend it but I think the basic idea of the smoothies is great!!!
I totally get it about people who want to hang out and talk because there are a lot of those in my family. Yesterday I was on the phone with two different family members. It's hard to keep moving when you're just sitting around chatting. At least some of them like to walk and talk!0 -
@zenobia9777 hmmm. I’m wary of super low calories as I’m afraid I’d binge. I was 127.4 today so heading in the right direction. I decided to try to stick to a two week challenge of staying consistent with my meals - a plan that helped me with weight loss before.
Breakfast is a large egg full of veggies and just a sprinkle of a meat.
Huge spinach salad with chicken breast and red onion.
And a protein shake/smoothie for dinner.
My snack is a half a protein bar after lunch and the other half after dinner. They’re delicious microwaved so it feels like a treat.
64 oz of water - at least. And try to finish my meals
by 9pm.
Funny - at the supermarket here I saw the kombucha and bought some - ginger berry and a trio something? Tastier than i remembered. Did you ever read anything about nor injecting more than 4oz of kombucha at a time?0 -
@CeeBeeSlim , I did read something about not using too much kombucha, but there are so many different variations of the way they combine things
I did not buy any kombucha this time because they didn't have what I wanted at the store.
Your plan sounds really delicious. Congratulations on your progress!
I have to say I am shocked at how well I did yesterday and today so far on this plan.
Because you drink the juice every few hours you really don't feel hungry and get that spaced out inability to concentrate. And I was able to work out today. I did 20 minutes of weights and I walked the dogs at a brisk pace for 30 minutes.
The yoga has definitely increased my arm strength but it is a new world to use the 5 lb weights. I was feeling the burn

You sound like you’re doing great! Congrats. Are you sticking with the no snacking? That’s hard for me - thus the melted chocolate protein bars!
I was 126.8 today so trending in the right direction! I wish I could get my 10k steps in but maxxing out at about 7500-8500. Will try to do some body weight stuff while I’m here. Anything is better than sitting but I tend to be all or nothing - no weights, no workout. Can’t walk an hour why walk. Not smart.
I looked back and saw I was 114 this time last year!😡.0 -
@CeeBeeSlim that is fantastic progress!
I didn't really need to get involved with this nutrition program --- I guess I should have asked more questions.
But I'm doing okay and walked the dogs at a brisk pace and went to hot yoga for an hour.
I could not do the yoga at quite the intensity because of the calorie reduction (I guess) but I got a good workout.
I'm sticking with the program and have not even missed my coffee. So I don't snack but I'm drinking the juice every 2 and 1/2 hours so I don't get hungry. I had trouble even getting myself to finish it last night but I did
I will be glad to get through this part! I do not plan a repeat.
I'm going to drop out of it if I feel like it's a negative impact on my health. Tomorrow we start eating more normally so the calorie amount should be better.
Hope to see a report that you lifted some weights. It is so good for stamina and for making you feel powerful, which I think is a very big adrenaline rush!!!
You must have been super skinny!!
My major motivation is wanting to feel stronger and younger and just overall well-being.
MFP is mad at me and won't post my diary to my news feed because I'm doing too few calories. Good for MFP. I don't think I've ever done this kind of fast in my entire life.

Be careful with the hot yoga and calorie reduction. I overdid both one day and thought I wouldn’t make it out of class! Hopefully tomorrow will be better for you.
126.4 today. Yay! I will admit there’s a bit of vanity to my efforts - in addition to feeling stronger and younger! Funny at 112.4, my lowest since middle school, which I weighed last year - I didn’t look skinny to me. It was only due to comments from my no-filter southern relatives that played into me probably allowing more calories beyond maintenance. “Turkey neck” wasn’t what I wanted to hear. 😤😂
No weights. Just body weight - which I guess is weight. You’re right! There’s such a adrenaline rush to weights and I overdid it once - lifting too much too soon and caused some lower back issues.
Good luck today!0 -
@CeeBeeSlim , that is very good advice about the hot yoga. I was pretty close to the door and I did okay.
Isn't it interesting how people love to comment on your appearance and your efforts? My son just told me that he thinks a three-day cleanse should only be done under a controlled environment! Like maybe I shouldn't be operating heavy machinery! I have actually functioned quite well but I was worried about it. Maybe he is noticing something that I am not.
Well, on the weight thing I will say that I am going to give yoga more credit today. The 5 lb weights really aren't too heavy. It's probably just the reduced calories. I am much more cautious than I probably should be, but your thoughts are very on point.
So I was using the 5 lb weights in the 45 minute band training class. It was pretty intense. I could not really use the bands and stretch my arms all the way out and back.
I started the day with only about 20 minutes of dog walking so I could get to the class on time.
It felt really good to eat a normal breakfast today. It is amazing how much your taste buds improve if you have not been eating a lot. I opened up my herbal flower tea and I couldn't believe how fragrant it was.
It's also amazing how long it takes to eat a hard boiled egg!
Congratulations on your continued progress. Be good to yourself!0 -
@zenobia9777 l chuckled at your “I was pretty close to the door” comment. I always made it a point to make it to Bikram yoga early - JUST so I can get a spot near the door. Every Bikram instructor I had at some point or two opened the door for a minute or so - if that. That bit of air made all the difference. 😅
126.0 even today. Wassup with these .4 daily drops? But I’ll take it.
I received two helpful emails that I think has encouraged me to stay on track this week. One was a 5 day nutrition course and the other was an email stressing the importance of continuing training through stressful life events. I’m not so good on the latter but trying.
Yeah - family comments! 😝. Happy you can eat a normal breakfast starting today. I’m not eating a lot calorie wise but I am full. Don’t wanna lose any muscle. Will see!0 -
@CeeBeeSlim I found it very stressful when caring for my mother. I had a lot of help from siblings but I was the main point of contact. We are so socialized to put other people first but this is a time that you need to put yourself first - in terms of mental and physical health. Just my opinion!!!
Congratulations on the weight loss! I'm supposed to get a weigh in tomorrow.
Today I walked the dogs 45 minutes and I'm going to the weightlifting class for 45 minutes.

@zenobia9777. Thanks for the self-care reminder. I need it! The last doc I saw had to rerun my cortisol numbers - they started out high and stayed that way - I guess there should’ve been some variation throughout. Oh well.
4 hr drive back to parents’ main home where I gave all my workout equipment. Gonna hula hoop today! Good luck with weigh in tomorrow!!0 -
Arrrgh. Couldn’t weigh yesterday - was off to a very early start to bring parents back home. So today - was 127.8 - I’m not that surprised. Stopped for a McDonalds chicken combo yesterday on the ride and although I just ate half the bread - I’m gonna blame it on the sodium! Go figure! McDonalds has salt? 🙄
So lots of water and movement today! Did my step aerobics YouTube video already. And close to my daily 10k steps goal.
@zenobia9777 - Hope you had a good weigh-in!1 -
@CeeBeeSlim I don't think I've ever had my cortisol levels checked. Is there a treatment for that besides trying not to stress??? They say it makes it hard to lose weight, but you have still been managing it. Kudos!
I actually did not weigh in today because they have scheduled it for tomorrow, but thanks!
I did not do it for that reason, but giving up dairy, gluten, peanuts and alcohol for two weeks is a good experiment to see if something is bothering my stomach.
What I have found is that when I drink a lot of water I feel uncomfortable, and the seltzer is particularly bad so I need to quit drinking so much of it. I still have some acid reflux.
I am tired of making my five meals in the evening for the next day, but it has taught me portion sizes. It is incredible how much 2 oz of meat can seem like when you have been mostly juicing.for three days.
I have felt pretty good, but not amazing. I was able to do most of yesterday's circuit training because the instructor was so good about modifying it for me. There's a hill to climb, but I can do it. I had the energy but the muscles were burning.
Today was a rest day and I walked the dogs at a moderate pace for 30 minutes. I woke up too late to beat the heat so we walked around Home Depot to stay cool!!!

Hi everyone I just joined the group today.
SW 154.8
CW 146
GW 123
Todays successes I tracked my food which is a good win for me I have been really struggling with it. I made good food choices today and drank my water. I exercised for 90 mins a combo of body weight exercises and running.1 -
Welcome, @shellight! That is a great exercise combo. I used to "run" -- haha, best was maybe 45 minute 5K.
What I learned after a very intense week of low calories and exercise - take that recovery day! And I ate all the planned food - did not try to cut back further.
I eliminated dairy, sugar, gluten, peanuts and caffeine. First time ever!!!
One more week for this experiment.
I like your chart - here is mine
SW 132.6 Feb 22
CW 118
GW 115?
I am currently tracking carefully and my diary is public. You are so right about tracking.
Today I am going to hot yoga. Walked the dogs for 35 minutes.

@shellight Welcome! Sounds like you had a great day yesterday! Tracking and logging has worked for me - I’m close to a 2400 day streak - and never would’ve thought it.
Down to 127.4 - right direction but clearly that McDonald’s meal threw a wrench in my trajectory. Oh well - but ngl - those fries were good!😬
I did a 30 min video (les mills power Hiit) - whew! And followed that up with a 45 min treadmill walk - the last 30 minutes i “walked” across the Brooklyn Bridge (thanks to my iPad and YouTube). It went fast!
@zenobia9777 - my doc - to my surprise - suggested ashwagandha tea for my cortisol levels and overall stress - his Indian family swears by it.
Not looking forward to 100+ heat index tomorrow! Happy Sunday!
