Hello everyone! I found out I was diabetic about 4 years ago. It was under control ish (6.0 a1c) until after I had my son 1.5 years ago when it all of a sudden shot up to a 13 a1c. I haven't been taking it seriously, I got it to a 10 which is still horrible but I'm ready to make the lifestyle change. I'm doing a keto very low carb diet and have seen good improvements but I'm looking for an accountability buddy/someone experienced to help me. Thanks in advance!

    Hey Kelly...

    I was diagnosed in 2016 with an A1C in the 13's. I went on metformin and the Diabetes Association diet and never had a BG reading under 200 until I started reducing carbs. Reducing the carbs more brought the BG number down more. I decided keto was going to be for me.

    After basically 18 months on keto, my A1C was in the low 5's, and the doctor took me off metformin. I have managed my glucose levels with keto ever since then. My last A1C was 5.7 with no meds. I have been pretty strict keto since 2016. My various numbers have been good with blood draws, and my doctor is very pleased.

    Keto is not something everyone can do, but it has really worked for me. I do a higher protein, lower fat version than most people seem to use for weight loss. I have tried intermittent fasting/eating windows and did not personally have much luck with that, but many people seem to find that helps too.

    Welcome Kelly - glad you are here.

    I have been a type 2 diabetic for about 10 years. Over the years I was put on different meds to control it but so many of the meds cause other problems, one being unable to lose weight.

    I now have Kidney problems so I don't only have to watch the food I eat due to diabetes but now have to revamp it because of the kidney problems. And my kidney problems are all due to the diabetes though I have had it under control all this time but never lost any weight (and I have about 140 to lose)

    Last straw was 2 weeks ago on Sunday I went by ambulance to the emergency with extreme pain to find out that I have some very small gall stones (caused from the fat I have eaten over the years) and kidney stones.

    Have tried many different plans - one being Keto but just got sicker and the doctor finally told me that is not the route for me as it was just to much fat for my gall bladder to handle. Remember everyone is different.

    So what he asked me to follow now is the WFPB program (whole food plant based) and he suggested the best one out there is The McDougall Plan by Dr. John McDougall. Basically the plan is whole plan foods (vegetables all kinds), whole grains, fruit, no animal protein, no dairy, and no salt or sugar or oil.

    When I started this about 5 weeks ago I gave up dairy -(eggs, milk, cheese and butter) for 1 week, then got rid of all animal products BUT chicken and only had it at one meal and only 2 oz. Did that for a week, then a second week, then discovered I had kidney stones. So went to my doctor and we relooked at my food plan and he said to go completely off all animal protein and oil. There is a reason for no oil and will look it up but it has something to do with it being toxin to our bodies. I grew up with beef / chicken / fish as the main item for a meal so this has been a change. I have now been this way for 3 weeks and must say I feel so much better and the removal of all salt has really made a difference. I don't miss the meat. And from what this book says (and I have spoken to many people that have been following way of eating for many, many years) is that if you have illnesses that you need meds for that most everyone is able to be completely off all meds. One lady, in her 70's went on this plan / lifestyle change as she had 130 pounds to lose and the doctor told her that her knees we completely shot and she needs surgery but needs to lose 70 pounds first. Aft 12 months she had lost 80 pounds and her doctor approved the surgery but she asked if she could postpond it for 8 - 12 months and he said yes - so when that time had come and gone (she now had lost 155 pounds) she went back to the doctor, he did tests and she was off all her meds and when he did the tests for her knees he said to her 'don't know what you have done, but your knees are completely healed, there is no sign of what I saw on the x-rays the year before'= so as she said 'my food healed me'

    Before you start any 'plan' please take time to really read all of the information on all on them - I am sure you would be amazed with The McDougall Plan - and he has lots of support should you want to go that way.

    Thank you for the advice! I was actually vegetarian for 4 years! It still wasn't doing the trick for me. Ever since I started this diet though my sugars are staying around 90 fasting and 120 for meals! I only have about 20 pounds I want to lose but have already lost 3 pounds on this diet! I'm sorry you're experiencing so many problems! I'm definitely going to read into the McDougall plan though!

    It sounds as if what you are doing is working for you. Those are great BG numbers. Thanks for the update!
