Hello I’m new.

I just found out in February of this year I have T2. My doctor has been of no real help. She told me I need to go on a diabetic diet and that I was only allowed 1500-1800 calories a day. That’s it. Oh and she put me on metformi. I take two in the morning and two at night. I found this app from a group of friends. Because the last app I was using crashed on me. I last all my data from the last few months. I have nothing to show my doctor Monday when I go for my blood work. Expect for this. And I have only been using it for 5 days. But I need to track. It gives me peace of mind. I am glad I found this group. Because I need all the help and support I can get right now. I am going to look into see if there are any classes near me that can help me learn more about my diabetes like you stated in your post. I look forward to meeting you all and learning from you all.

The doctors are sometimes not much help - just saying. I found the MFP forums to be a lot of help when I was first diagnosed.

I claim all the doctor cares about is your A1C. I don't think mine ever did more than glance at the daily numbers, and that was because I said, "I am not tracking this stuff for you if you don't care."

It really seems hit and miss if you get a good doctor or not, I've been very fortunate, or unfortunate, depending on how you look at my situation.
If you check out your local community services, they may be able to hook you up with some diabetes classes and support groups.
Or maybe the American Diabetes Association, if you live in the states, or Diabetes Canada if you're on this side of the border.
Keep coming back, we're here for you.

Thank you both. Everyone keeps asking me what my A1C is and I keep telling people I have no clue because I don’t know what it is. My doctor never told me just said , you’re a diabetic now. Eat this many calories a day and take this medication. That was it. I am having to look things up for myself. I saw the page with all the helpful websites on it . I wrote them all down so I could look them up. I am doing that tomorrow. I had a busy day today. I went and got new eye glasses and I tried on a ton of clothes I have been to scared to try on and was very happy to find they fit me now. So it is like I have a whole new clothes full of clothes and a ton to give away. That is the only good thing that has come out of all of this isI am learning how to eat healthy foods and the right amount of food. And the weight is starting to come off. Praying it keeps coming off. I need to to so I can get off this medication. Thank you again for your input.

That right there in bold tells me your A1C is going to be lower. And yes. It’s probably a thing your doctor will care a great deal about.

Some doctors are busy. Some are burnt out. Some will assume if you’re not someone who looks fit and upper middle class you won’t understand details. Etc

They’re not all that way. But enough are that it is a common experience for some people.

Definitely bring pencil and paper to your next visit. Ask about your A1C and other lab values. Ask if there’s an app you can log into to see your lab results and medical records. (MyChart is a common one in the US)

Welcome to MFP, and welcome to this group.

I would ask about online access to labs for certain. I bet that is an option they just have not told you about.

When I go for my lab work, I go to Dynacare(don't know if you have that in the US. I pay $9.00 a year, and they post my results usually the next day. I think a lot of labs have this service.
Ad definitely ask about you A1C and other numbers. I usually make a list of questions to ask before I go. It just makes things easier for me and the doctor.

My doctor has an online portal. Irritatingly their policy was to wait to post numbers until after they had called with them. I told the doctor I did not need the nurse to call to tell me my numbers all looked good. I wanted to see what they were so I could have questions ready for the appointment. He said, "OK."

Maybe I am a more engaged patient than some? I want to see the numbers.

I always check with Dynacare before the doctor lets me know. Like you, I want to see the numbers. She just recently abandoned the portal. She explained to me today that she has 1000 patients, all sending her emails more than once between visits. I write down any questions I have for her, and ask her at my appointment.

I have a long list of questions for my doctor. I go and see someone tomorrow. My normal doctor is out all this week. I just hope this person can help me with all my questions. I am sure they will be able too. I will ask about the portal tomorrow that would sure help me out. I am super excited because I will get to see how much more weight I have lost. I don’t have a scale at my house yet. I was waiting until I lost more weight. lol silly I know but I wanted it to be a gift for losing weight to myself. I have not been this small since I don’t know when. It is kind of scary. I keep thinking I am going to wake up one morning and I this will have all been a dream and I will be that plus size person again. Anyway, off to make myself a salad for dinner I found a new dressing and I can’t wait to try it. Hope you all have a great day and thank you so much for all the advice.

I think you are doing well. Tell us how much you have lost (and maybe get some scales).

If your experience is like mine with my diagnosing doctor, you might have to be a little determined to get answers. This is not the way it should be of course. Sometimes my doctor would be "Oh look at the time!" and run off, but his nurse would answer questions very well after he left.

I have a “mychart” portal with my pcp (Novant Health) I get all results, notes, and even get to message questions that need answers.
