Joyful July, the First Part of the Second Half of the Year!

Hello, healthy eaters!
What are your plans for July?
I am working on eating lots of vegetables, and eating salads for dinner, salads that would meet Dr Fuhrman's recommendations.
Here are some of the recipes I am looking at:

Joe and I have been getting prepared meals for the last year and a half. They are WFPB-ish. They use salt, but not a lot, and they use oil sparingly when needed. There's tons of variety and everything is yummy. Serving sizes are larger than I should have, so I've been trying eat less of it and I've cut down to 2 meals per day most days.
For breakfast I have a smoothie with Amla Greens powder and KaChava power, fresh greens, almond milk and frozen blueberries. The amla is good for a lot of things but it helps reduce my cravings and is good for blood sugar. I've also been having some metamucil fiber capsules with each meal to help with blood sugar (slows digestion) and feeling full for longer. So far it is working well. I've been doing this for maybe a week now. It feels easy and sustainable.
For this month, I want to continue with the smoothies and Plantage meals. I'm also trying to put in more hours at work, and I know I need to exercise more but I am struggling with that. So 3 workouts a week would be a great start.
Love your pics Bisky. Glad you guys are loving Alaska.
& thanks for the links, Austin. I'm going to read through the guide.0 -
Hello, healthy eaters!
How is July going for you?
My eating plans had a wrinkle thrown in them by a tooth thing, and I spent a little over a week eating fewer salads and smoothies, since chewing, cold and heat were all challenging. Things have been repaired, and I am heading back to plan. I ate a decent number of raw veggies and fruit today, and a couple of servings of vegan protein. I look forward to getting in my big salad with lentils tomorrow. (I am out of calories today).
In other news, it is finally not rasining, so I got to do a long outdoor walk. Very exciting. Here in central Texas, it has been raining for a couple of weeks. Phew.

Hi!
I can’t believe it is past the midpoint in July.Austin- dental problems are the worst and expensive.
Carla- glad you are liking the Ka’Chava. I will have to try the Amia greens as I still have trouble with a sweet tooth. How are the dogs and Joe?
I went back to San Antonio for a week to check on plants, aquarium and house. Everything was good.. The stars were aligned as my bookclub, card workshop and 2 mah Jong groups were meeting plus got in a couple of games of pickleball. Nice to be back in cooler weather.
My eating plans are:
Protein smoothie in am. Fruit snack (rainier cherries for July)
Salad for lunch
Veggie bowl or soup dinner or veggie wrap.
We have been having fun with the rice wraps used for spring rolls and putting salad cabbage and bean mix in them and dipping in a dressing. They are perfect for summer.

I can totally identify with tooth problems, Austin. I had ongoing dental issues that are all finally fixed as of this spring, and I can chew on both sides. So much better!
Great timing with your trip home to check on things, Bisky. Where are you going to explore next in Alaska? Did your friends come to stay yet? Interesting about the rice wraps you are using. I came across a sealed bag of rice wraps in our cupboard and the expiry was a month or so ago. I'm betting they are still good since they are sealed and maybe I'll try some of our dinner in a wrap.
Joe and I are canceling our Plantage meals. As much as we love them, they are too indulgent for getting weight off and the cost really adds up. A luxury we can't justify right now.
So, that means planning and making meals again! We're going to have an Asian Sesame salad topped with tofu and mandarin slices and a Thai salad with tofu. We're still going to go for convenience, with pre-chopped coleslaw bags but other than that it will be from scratch.
For my treadmill workouts, I'm doing a 4-day cycle on repeat. day 1 - 1 hour, day 2 - 45 minutes, day 3 - 30 minutes. Then a rest day or back to the top. Right now I need that day off, but we'll see.
Last night I got a bonus workout moving and assembling furniture. We replaced our couch and loveseat with a couch and 2 chairs and I worked up a bit of a sweat setting things up. The couch looks nice but you wouldn't know it because we've got it covered in sheets to protect it from the dogs. I'm sure we'll give up on that soon enough.

Carla - I think the rice wraps will be fine. I just watched a video with laying a big romaine lettuce leaf on top of the wrap and then chopped up veggies, garbanzo beans and dressing…roll it all up and cut in half. I do love the chopped coleslaw.
3 sets of friends have visited. Another friend is coming in August and another first of Sept. while we go to Denali and Fairbanks. He and his wife use to live in Anchorage…they take care of our dogs in San Antonio but recently moved to PA.
playing pickleball, walking dogs in areas safe from moose and bears. Tomorrow we are taking a bike ride. Berry season soon!0 -
Hello, Carla and Bisky!
Bisky, your Alaska stories have me wanting to visit someday. It sounds so great! Are you doing lots of walking? Berry season? Yum! Also — what are the names of your dogs?
Carla, your meal plan sounded great (Asian Sesame salad topped with tofu and mandarin slices and a Thai salad with tofu)! I hope the food was as tasty as it sounded! And I hope the workouts are going well.
My current food plan, in general is: green smoothie lunch and big salad dinner. I have been tending to snack on vegan protein Mezcla bars, and am dropping those down to a weekly treat. I have been hitting at least 10K steps/day. I have been adding a bit of strength work and need to do more this coming month.

i love my morning smoothies! need to green it up more.
We are walking a lot in Alaska but i really need to add some weight training. I played pickleball for 2 hours last night and then had horrible muscle spasms/cramping when i got home
Brooks was offered 4 month contract for next summer!

Bisky, your dogs are so, so cute! I love their names! Mr. Grubby Pants is an especially fabulous name. I love that he is sometimes white and sometimes grey brown. Congratulations on Brooks getting the contract for next summer — how amazing!
Carla, thanks for the sympathy re. dentistry. I got my problem cleared up and am very much enjoying chewing on both sides! How is cooking going? Your new food plan sounded delicious — Asian Sesame salad topped with tofu and mandarin slices — yum!
I am doing well at working out. It feels like the weight is dropping more slowly than I would like, but I guess that will always be the case. I am down about 8 pounds for July, so good progress.
Today has been pretty good. I need to buy more green onions, as I missed the O in GBOMBS today.
- Big green smoothie (spinach, kale, mustard greens, peaches, blueberries, acai, spirulina, flax meal, vegan protein powder)
- Big salad (romaine lettuce, butter lettuce, mini peppers, golden snacking tomatoes, an apple, steamed mushrooms, garbanzo beans)
- Exercise: outdoor walk, treadmill session, evening stroll with husband
Also, here's an interesting-to-me news tidbit. I read about this in New Scientist, andf am passing on a link to it elsehwere: "a groundbreaking study has found that [obesity]’s far more complex [than just BMI], uncovering 11 distinct biological types of obesity, each with unique causes and health risks that could change how we treat and understand the disease."
