My name is Steve, but a lot of folks call me Cap thanks to my obsession with Captain American and my schizophrenic blog (http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/scschenk) that often delves into the science behind issues liked to weight management. I've set up this group to create an environment where people can ask questions about physiology, share answers with each other, or get them from me. In addition, as a lot of MFP members are themselves college students in science/health science programs, this group is a place for them to support each other and receive guidance from someone with experience in that arena.

I am a community college biology professor with 20+ years professional experience in the life sciences, including marine biology, animal physiology, and microbiology. I've been teaching professionally full-time for 11 years now and specialize in human A&P instruction. I've been nominated for several teaching awards (have been the winner of one) at three different institutions, have a close working relationship with one of the top textbook publishers, and utilize a case-based style of instruction that emphasizes application of scientific knowledge in the real world. Besides being actively engaged in my own weight loss/fitness odyssey, I also have a rare genetic disorder that I've passed on to all of my kids (I and my two surviving sons are all hearing impaired), so I have a great deal of personal experience with the power of knowledge for empowering patients in health care.

Feel free to introduce yourself in this thread. As the moderator, I expect to use or see language (with reference to the body) that is frank and may make some uncomfortable...but this is an open group that all are encouraged to use. Please keep it clean and friendly!

Start your own thread if you have a topic for discussion or a question you want answered. I'll check in here once or twice a day to answer questions...and if a good thread gets going I may post additional info in my blog to reach a wider audience.

Cheers and happy knowledge acquisition!
Steve

Hi, I'm Karen, nurse with the bachelor degre of the university of Montréal. I've been a nurse for 10+years ( worked in the ICU before having kids, loved the adrenaline rush). I'm a mom of 2 wonderful boys. Still a nurse but part time now.

On a health mission, a life time journey to stay healthy and live long to see my kids and grand-kids. I started my health journey in january 2011 and lost 75lbs+ and plan to keep it off, my body and I, now understand each other.

My superhero of choice is wonderwomen. My other fave are Wolverine and newly Thor, can't wait to see Cap America, have not rented it yet. :) you might make it in my top 10. :flowerforyou:

I am Cindy, everyone calls me Mommawarrior or MW.
I work on a farm with a bunch of guys that eat nothing but junk and the word exercise makes them tired. I get teased everyday for getting up at 4am to run or go to the gym to lift. I get teased for eating healthy while they are shoving girl scout cookies and Big Macs down their throats. Come to think of it, they tease me for everything....lol.

I just want to be healthy and look good doing it! I love to read anything Cap writes. Don't understand it all, but I like to read it.

Hey everyone! I'm a biology major getting a teaching license. I'm taking A&P this semester, so I can (almost) fully appreciate Steve's scientific ramblings.

    HELLO!!!

I'm Crystal, I live in rural NC, and I'm an outpatient mental health and substance abuse therapist/behavioral health consultant. Crystal_Pistol is the name my childhood dance teacher gave me and I feel like it still fits me well. I have always loved to learn and I love the company (even the web company) of bright people. I've gained LOTS of weight focusing on building my business and totally forgot to practice what I preach in therapy regarding self care. I stumbled across MFP on my phone one day, made some great connections, and have a family of folks who keep me coming back and reminding me to put my health first on the days I forget.

I'm excited to be in this group because Steve has been a great resource for me. I hope I can be helpful to someone in some way. While I don't do therapy online, I am more than happy to point you in the right direction if you have any questions you want to ask me.

Hi! I'm Melissa, and one of the few nicknames that I have taken to that I will allow people to use is Missile. (It all started with a 2-year-old who couldn't pronounce Melissa. lol. The fact that I also run has nothing to do with it because I am NOT a missile.)

I am a former technology specialist in the educational industry, so my knowledge of the human body and what it does is limited to what I can find on Google. lol. Well, not completely. My Mom is a transcriptionist for an orthopedic surgeon so when I have silly questions about why my knees ache or why I have shin splints, I generally ask her and get a nearly correct scientific answer. Former because I have been a stay-at-home Mom to my two boys for the past 18 months while I am "between" work.

Otherwise, I'm here more to learn because how the body works fascinates me, but I had a hard time stomaching my microbiology class in college, so anything where I might have to see blood and guts would probably not be a good idea for me. And Cap'n is the bomb. :)

Hi, i'm Michelle (or Shelli). I'm 29 and a Pharmacist. I love reading the Cap's blogs because he's so great at explaining everything that I once knew and forgot in the 5 years i've been out of school!! I feel there is SO much misinformation floating around out there, especially relating to dieting, and he's set a lot of us straight more than once. Keep it up and thanks!!

I'm Allison; I'm a speech pathologist at a small city hospital. I love anatomy and the human body but don't know much that isn't related to speech and hearing. Therefore, I love reading things from the Cap because I get to learn so much about exercise physiology! Glad to be here

Hello all, my name is Hannah. I am a nursing student in my first semester. I am currently taking A&P 1 and am looking for a little more understanding in this field. I LOVE Cap's blogs more than any other on MFP. It gives a more accurate look at things over the emotional from every other blog on here.

Hi! I'm a research scientist with a PhD in pharmacology. I'm currently one of the millions searching for better treatments and/or preventative strategies for Alzheimer's disease. I will be happily lurking (and occasionally commenting?). Believe it or not, I could use a refresher on general biology/human physiology. I'm a bit rusty. I spend too much of my time worrying about neurons and sticky amyloid proteins- I can miss the big picture pretty easily.

P.S. My name is Rebekah (if you couldn't guess from my sign in name)

Hello, my name is Paige....I'm a mother of two of two awesome kids, a full-time Paediatric nurse and a scout troop leader...needless to say my plate is full...I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease (hypothyroidism) in my early twenty's and was foolishly non-compliant with the treatment....fast forward to present day and you have a frustrated woman who finally started to listen to her doctor and a metabolism that is practically going in reverse. Steve has been very generous sharing his knowledge of this topic with me and I know there are many more things I'm interested in learning....I am your humble student!

Hi everyone. My name is Mark. Although I haven't dove into it fully yet, I am slowly working on a B.S. in Kinesiology and then eventually a masters. This semester ended up going down the toilet due to some problems. Next semester I will begin working on it full time!!! I look forward to learning things in this group, as well as offering help wherever I can.
