I have gained 20 pounds since I quit. My appetite is INSANE. Anything I can do to ease this?

i gained only the first two months. Then I began exercising and stop gaining at 10lbs. I find it very difficult to lose weight since then. But for the record, the same time I have some thyroid issues, so I can't blame only quiting smoking for gaining weight. I have also to admit that at the first months I was eating everything and in huge amounts! Specially sweets and chocolate!0

my weight loss completely stopped when i quit, too. no matter WHAT i did!! i tracked EVERYTHING! my appetite was crazy, but i felt like high protein, and filling foods sometimes helped me. try having steak for dinner or a big piece of chicken.its weird, but hard, crunchy, or chewy foods helped, too. i just needed to feel like my mouth was doing something lol. i used to leave granola out on the counter for a couple hours to get nice and stale, and i would crunch on that while at work.
my theory is this: you NEED to quit smoking. if it slows down your weight loss process by a few months or so, big deal. i know we all want to lose weight, and that seems most important because it's something we can SEE, but smoking is doing more damage to our bodies than the 15 or 20 lbs that we might hold on to while quitting! if you gain a little bit of weight while quitting, its ok. you're body is stressing out, but it'll bounce back. from my experience with quitting, the weight loss and cravings went back to normal after about a month.
just don't get discouranged and keep up the healthy eating and healthy lifestyle :flowerforyou:0 -
I totally agree, Craft. The weight will come back off. Not smoking had to be my main focus!!0

I'm mostly maintaining my weight. I've dropped a few pounds even. As was said though, the benefits to not smoking far out weight the weight you may gain back. It will come back off eventually. Being able to breath will make it all that much easier.0

well... it's about choices. If you can stop eating and smoking you would not gain weight.
On the other hand it is:
20 pounds+health vs increased possibility of having cancer...

Yup, I gained 20 pounds in the first five months after I quit. That's when I joined this site and started working with a personal trainer. It suuuuuuuuuuucks. But I had to do it.0

i gained 25kg and ended up at 115kg. but fifteen months later i am back down to 87kg and in better shape than i have ever been deffinatly no regrets0

Hi everyone! I was going to post something similar so I figured I'd just respond. Thursday will be three weeks smoke free and I am RAVENOUS all the time! I'm not mindless snacking to fill the void..I'm actually hungry all day long. I'm not used to this and I don't like it! I've been avoiding the scale since Thanksgiving. Please tell me my appetite will calm down! :frown:0

Hi all, I have been quit for 9+ months and just wanted to chirp in with my comments. I too gained at the beginning but I knew it would happen but soon you realize that you can take control of your eating. A lot of it is chemical related and by that I would quote an article that was written about addiction. Once I understood why I was ravenous, I found that I could control myself with the proper eating habits and am on my way to losing more weight than ever.

I quickly gained 5 pounds when I quit, but have since lost it and am back to where I started. You aren't really hungry - your body just thinks its missing something so it sends signals for you to eat. I got through this by drinking all my water everyday and eating every 2-3 hours like I always have. You have to recognize that you aren't actually hungry. If you eat every few hours, you couldn't possibly be *honestly* hungry. I also make a daily goal out of not eating anything impulsively. This has been tough to stick to, but has paid off. If you have enough willpower to refuse cigarettes, you also have enough willpower to take responsibility for your addiction and what its done to your body. Just take a deep breath, and put your mind elsewhere when you think you're hungry - because you probably aren't.0

Very interesting and true: I am quit over 5 weeks now and really proud of it. I don't have cravings any more (for a ciggie) but I am constantly hungry, too. I didn't gain weight because I exercise every day and drink gallons of water. I had been fighting so hard to lose it, I don't want to gain!!!! But this is a struggle...I';d rather call it BATTLE. I'm thinking of food every second of the day.
I do understand now that I am not really hungry, that it is a chemical thing and so on. But tell me please:
How long will it be for like that? Will I be feeling hungry for weeks, months or always?????
Oh, tell me , PLEASE, before I start eating my dogs' food right out of the bag :sad: ...or even my dogs:embarassed:0 -

The last couple of days the cookies, chocolates, fatty foods and all the stuff are kind of everywhere. Woke up last night because I had a nightmare: cookies hanging from the ceiling and me trying to avoid them *ROFL*

We are non-smokers 6 weeks now which is just fabulous and the greatest present we've given ourselves this year.
I think for me it was easier because I'm living in the middle of nowhere, far away from Irish civilization, no shops close by, no neighbours and a hubby who has always been a non-smoker. But the hunger.....it followed me everywhere, like a stubborn puppy. With more exercise and a trillion gallons of water I managed to tame this hunger.
BUT: I will PIG OUT this Christmas:bigsmile:0 -

i quit smoking last august and have constantly stuffed my face since. i think i have my cravings under control now ( i hope so). I have also put on about 20 pounds in weight. I have never succesfully stuck to a diet or fitness plan in my life but have now realised that if i have the willpower to become a non smoker, i ( hopefully ) can lose the weight and become fitter as well.0

You CAN do it and you don't necessarily have to gain weight if you're exercising.
Today I'm quit 57 days. The cravings are gone, my skin looks great, I can breathe properly and run a few miles without break. I don't snore any more , well, yes, even women do snore if they are smokers AND overweight....:embarassed:
I've just checked out: since I quit I've lost 15 lbs. I'm happy, feeling great and strong and healthy, am not depressed....
Does anybody need more reasons for quitting:happy:0
