Aware me on game system purchase

Hey all,

I'm a PC gamer at heart, about to cancel my WoW sub, been playing since Vanilla. Since most of my spare time (outside of being a father and running a business) is spent in the gym, I don't really have the time or the interest to stick to WoW.

(I recently fired up D2 LOD again though, that game never gets old).

Anyways, I'm considering buying a console and I'm trying to decide between Ps3 and XBoX360.

Assuming I only care about gaming and that I'm not concerned about other features, what would you recommend?

I mostly enjoy RPG's but I'd venture out a bit. (I think a single player RPG would feel like less of a time sink, something I can fire up and play for 30 minutes without the social aspects of an MMO).

Thanks!

Tough choice on the console purchase. I have both. Bought the 360, and the PS3 was a gift. LOL. I barely play the 360, mostly PS3. I just like it better.

Edit: Also MMO's are coming to consoles in full force in the next year or two.

I really really really really prefer the Playstation.

Plus doesn't X-box always get the "red ring of death?"

The PS3 has, and always will be, inferior to the XBox360.

If you only care about gaming, the 360 has always had better games. And the 360 does not always red ring, but the PS3 has certainly had some serious privacy issues over the past year. The technology and security is just not as good as Microsoft's.

My SO has been a serious gamer for a very very long time, and he will tell you that PS3 is good for only a few games and its Blu-ray player. 360 games also have very good achievement systems, which makes it much more fun to play games.

Is "Red Ring" the PC equivalent to getting bluescreened?

I dunno. PS3 has been getting some nice exclusives. Also if you're a big baseball gaming fan (like me), then MLB The Show is just amazing. hehe

The PS3 might have slightly better hardware performance, but I still prefer the XBOX 360. Mine is the Halo 3 Special Edition, and it's never had the red ring. I think some of it might have to do with how well you treat your system too. Gotta keep that baby ventilated and cool! I agree with Zoe that the variety of games available is slightly better too, plus the Kinect is awesome.

I prefer 360, just because it is what I got first (getting PS3 for X-mas - surprise ruined!).
However, from what I can tell, the processor/graphics on the PS3 is better, but there is a more substantial game list (especially for RPG) for the 360. So that would be my suggestion based on your interests.

When Diablo3 comes out I'll be all over it, but I thought a console would be a good thing while I wait. =)

My vote is for the xbox, both my boyfriend and I play it quite a bit and we've never once gotten the red ring of death.
  • Well, if you're done with WoW, why not try Star Wars: The Old Republic. Then you don't have to get a console if you don't want. As for the red ring of death, it was an issue with the first and second gen xbox systems, since then they have updated the hardware in the systems, extended the warranty timeframe, and generally put out a much better product than they had in the beginning. I would also take some time to see if you have a lot of friends on a specific system, or if you need the blu-ray, also the game library should help influence your decision. Those are my suggestions... lol

Red Ring usually means your console is bricked. You can't turn it on, it's dead. It has to be shipped to x-box and they'll replace it. It happens so frequently, that Microsoft has a deal with Fed-Ex exclusively to ship said dead x-boxes.

And to say that the xbox has a ton MORE and BETTER games is pretty ignorant. I would say PS3 had much better games a few years ago, but it's balancing out now that everything (well most games) are being released on both systems. Graphics are nicer on PS3 as well.

I have a personal adversion to xbox controllers. I haven't tried PS move (It doesn't really interest me) but I have tried Xbox's Kinect and was incredibly underwhelmed.

ETA:: If you are a PC gamer though, and the games you like are released on PC, I would have to agree and just upgrade your current system. You'll never love anything as much as your first gaming system. Maybe that's why I have an affinity for Playstation.

Not going to get into a debate, but the 360 had Forza 4 and Gears 3 this year, which are both great games (Forza 4 is very much an iteration of Forza 3, and I think you could question whether or not it warranted a $60 price tag, but that's another discussion). The PS3 had Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, Killzone 3, Littlebigplanet Planet 2, Infamous 2, Yakuza 4, Motorstorm Apocalypse, and those are only the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Show me a game on the 360 that even begins to match Uncharted 3 visually, and I'll eat my hat.

Both systems are in the sunset of their lifespan, and we're likely to see new console announcements from at least one of them at E3 next year, probably both from the rumors floating around. I would say either would be a great choice, the new S model 360s are not prone to the RROD like the older models were, so I think as long as you don't buy used, you'd be in good shape reliability wise.

I'm kind of ready for both to be done, since they both hold back tech innovation in gaming on the PC. PC ports almost end up with shoddy textures, poly counts, and less innovation in general because the console versions always sell more, and developers are working with 5-10 year old hardware in consoles are this point, where PC power was already double the 360 when the 360 launched.

Skyrim is awesome, but I can only imagine how much more awesome it could have been if it wasn't throttled by the limitations of consoles development.

Would you anticipate any common problems with a used PS3? Not asking you to predict the future obviously, but since you specifically mention that a used XBox may be prone to this problem, what can you tell me in regards to used Ps3s?

If you're going to buy a used PS3, make sure it's a Slim model. Some of the older models had issues similar to the original 360s with the systems getting too hot and solder on the board losing connection. I would still recommend against used tho, for the extra $50-$100 you're getting the benefit of the newest hardware revision and a warranty.

I suppose it depends on what games you like. OP said he likes RPGs. In my opinion, the 360 is far superior in that area when it comes to games. Customer service is also far better. They will fix it or replace it if you get RROD, no question.

And, I dunno. Skyrim looks pretty damn beautiful on a 60” 1080p LCD HDTV.

If you have friends that use the x-box, then you might want to consider that system. It has a better buddy system that lets you chat before loading up a specific game.

However if you want a system with a blu-ray player and overall better hardware then go with the ps3. (P.S. Skyrim was released for ps3 as well)

I have both, I mostly play the PS3, the blu-ray is a nice feature and it has free online. I play Xbox exclusive gears and halo. It is silly to argue one is better than the other. When I play on one, then the other, I never go "I wish the PS3 did this, or my Xbox did that" I never notice one looking graphically better than the other. The one advantage Xbox has is there are a ton more used games, so the price is lower to get in late and buy older games.

Get the one that has the games you like, and if you like multiplayer, get the one your friends have.

From what I've heard Skyrim looks a little better on the PS3 texture wise, maybe due to more space on a BD disc. I can't confirm or deny that since I'm playing it on the PC. I've also heard that once the save file gets to a certain size on the PS3, it may cause issues. I've also heard there's a texture load-in problem on the XBox 360. Consoles all have their pluses and minuses I guess. I own all 3 consoles, use them all to some extent, for me it's never been that one is better than the other, I don't love the system, I love the games.

Once a good hi-res texture pack mod comes out for it on the PC, the console versions will look like Morrowind in comparison anyway.

It depends what you are using it for. What games are important to you? Do you plan to do online gaming?

I have both. I prefer the 360 because the PlayStation network is useless and the opposite of user friendly. If you plan on gaming online a lot, then the 360 is Far FAR FAR superior. The new systems are not dying like the old ones are so I wouldn't worry abuot the red ring of death or anything like that. Also the PS3 tends to get all the cool demos and downloads late...it is irritating.

However, if you don't care about online gaming, the PS3 has Uncharted 3.......and a blueray player.

I suggest looking at all the titles your interested in and evaluate what you want most out of your system. Once you've done that your question should answer itself.

Also, it's my understanding that multiplatform games are usually created for the360 first and then converted over to PS3 after that....so the fact that the PS3 supposedly has better capabilities has been kind of irrelevant so far. I have compared a few games and they always look pretty much the same so I honestly wouldn't take that into consideration when deciding which one is right for you.

Depends a lot on on the developer, time, and money. Criterion used the PS3 as their lead on games like Burnout Paradise and the last Need for Speed (before NFS:Run). Their reasoning was that the PS3 is a beast to develop for out of the gate, and that it's easier to transition that code over to the 360 and PC afterwards. The same thing happened with Final Fantasy 13, Assassin's Creed, LA Noire, Dark Souls, Castlevania Lords of Shadow, Crysis 2, Dead Space, and Homefront.

Weirdly enough Modern Warfare 2's lead platform was the PS3, although on 1 and 3 the 360 was. I've heard MW3 is a broken mess on the PS3, so maybe that was why (although, to be fair, sounds like Call of Duty Elite is broken across all platforms currently).

People complained about Red Dead Redemption on the PS3, but I played through that game to the end on the PS3, which is rare for me with a Rockstar game, and never had an issue.

I don't think it's been mentioned.. but Skyrim is not a 30 minute RPG.. You can't just pick it up and play 30 mins..

And it's already been said.. but i'm just going to reiterate.. Pick the system with the games you like.. That will be the system you like better.. See if they are on both systems..

Keep in mind a new xbox system is already in development rumours are it will be out end of 2012 or 2013.. whereas PS3 has a 10 year commitment to each system.. and the ps3 is what only 5 years old..

Rumors are that the new XBox will be announced at E3 next year, with a probably 2013 release. Rumors tho...who knows.

PS3 will be supported for 10 years, but the PS2 was as well, came out in 2000 and the PS3 came out in 2006, so I would expect even tho they'll support the PS3 until 2016, they won't wait until then to release a new system.

I get this question a lot at work, so I'm gonna try to be as honest as possible.

Both systems have great exclusives. However, 360 has superior online systems, whereas the PS3 has a superior processor and data storage. Graphically, games just look better and have shorter loading times on the PS3 than on the 360. The PS3's Cell processor is still state of the art.

The 360 has a larger selection of games, since it's been out slightly longer, however, as such there's more crappy games. But you can't beat their online support and community. You get what you pay for in that case.

If you're looking at a system to play RPG's on, then I'd go with the PS3. If you're looking to play online, go with the 360.
