Hello. I'm trying to find ways to increase my protein since I don't feel that I'm getting enough. I'm not a fan of protein shakes, or at least I haven't found one that I like. Also, I would like to know the equation for the amount of protein I need to make sure I'm in a good range. I'd be okay with someone figuring it for me! ha! I currently weigh 148.3 and am 29 years old (almost). Not sure what else is needed:smile:

Your body fat % is an important number. Let's assume you have 120-ish lbs of lean mass. Try to eat that many in grams.
Eggs are great, I love a can of tuna. A nice steak of course.

Get 1 gram per pound of lean body weight per day.

For main protein sources I eat chicken, beef, bison, whey and casein protein.

I have about 6 different sources of animal protien in my freezer right now, just pick an animal you like and eat more of it and I agree with the one gram per lb of lean body mass. So calculate your body fat percentage and subtract it from your weight and that will give you about how many grams of protein you need. I try to eat at least 155g a day for you it will be different.

typical average female that is not overweight is about 20- 24%.... So that would mean that you need around 112g of protien per day
  • Hey Dusti,
Walter and I got some of the whey protein power (before I had EAS Soy) and now I see why you don't like them! They taste pretty bad. We got strawberry and vanilla. The only way I like them is to add fresh fruit and then they are okay. I use my hand blender to whip it all up and it is 26 grms of protein. If you could fine a way to like them it would really help with the protein intake...

The BSN Syntha-6 is really good but it is not very paleo/primal friendly I think it has 15g of carbs per serving and 22g of protien.

Yep. I calculated it at about 118g. I'm not getting close to that at all with the way I'm going lately. I think I need to increase my eating overall. I'm doing really good at keeping my carbs under 100g. The thing is my appetite has decreased since decreasing my carbs so I feel full much faster.

And eating protien is gonna keep you full longer cause it takes longer to digest... youll just have to get used to it... then it will be no big deal.

I get the EAS Chocolate Whey. It is not great on its own, but not bad either. I mix it will almond milk, almond butter, sometimes berries or banana, etc. It tastes great when you mix in the other stuff...

I had a debate with myself whether or not to take a protein supplement since there really aren't any that are paleo (if you're trying to remove dairy from your diet). I try as much as I can to get all of my protein from "real" food sources and I'm gradually getting better at it. I eat about 40% of my calories in protein (about 150g), 40% in fat and 20% in carbs. On days where I don't meet my protein for the day I supplement with Isopure Zero Carb creamy vanilla mixed with coconut milk and about half a tbsp of cocoa. It's my chocolate milk now. : )

A big part of paleo is trying to meet your nutritional needs from natural sources aka unsupplemented. It has been pretty difficult to do, but I try to give it my best and supplement when I can't quite make it. I can't site any specific source for my calorie percentages, various sites I have read recommend 30-50% fats. With keeping my protein a little higher I've noticed I have more energy and don't feel the urge to snack as much throughout the day. I did find a site that had different %'s listed out for different types of people, elite athletes, daily exercisers, sedentary, etc. I'll try to find it if it might help you.
