Do you guys know your co-workers who use, or are there some you suspect use? I find this quite interesting since steroids are illegal, yet I know for a fact that some of my fellow LE use....several I used to work with....though as long as you don't say anything, or anyone get too suspicious, they don't test.

Do most drug tests include steroid use?

I was under the impression that general drug tests are only looking for the basic narcotics, and they will only test for other drugs if you are a suspected user.

I have friends that use, though they keep quiet about it since the general population is very ignorant.

No, they don't test because the test is something like $300 a pop, since they're mostly just testing for elevated testosterone and testing for individual drugs is even more expensive.

At my old department, some of the SWAT guys used, but it was never discussed...but some found it suspicious that 3 guys who went over to the full time SWAT team (so they were already in shape) gained 30+lbs of muscle, with no body fat increase, within a year or so. No one ever said a word, but everyone knew what was going on.

I've read about Olympic athletes and body builders beating tests 2 days after using steroids, there is a VERY wide array of different steroid options that I think the tests can't possibly test for them all.

Some of the most basic steroids are easy to make in your own home for a quarter of the street price. You just have to understand chemistry on a high schooler's level.

If someone knew how to train really well, eat perfectly and sleep was easy, then 30 pounds of beginner gains would seem possible. But if someone who is already 200+ pounds and fit were to gain 30 pounds of muscle, it would be very suspicious. How does the higher ups see this? Do they just look the other way and say "better that he is fit and strong than weak and incapable"

They look the other way, mainly because they see it as an advantage for us. We don't fight fair, and we're trained to do whatever it takes to go home at night. Now if you get caught, that's different, you'll be fired and sent to jail quicker than the average user. Since its illegal, its frowned upon, but understandable why someone would use.

I think steroids should be a controlled substance, but if someone wants to use it should be as easy as going to your doctor and mapping out a plan of what to use when, blood work, diet, etc. They are a great tool with little to no risk, when used correctly.

Agreed. I would use them if they were legal...notice I said use, not abuse like bodybuilders, I don't want the bodybuilder pregnant belly.

Agreed, I would use as well if I could. My reason being, I'm not trying to cheat and win medals, but hopefully improving my chances of saving a life. We already disregard our health and our safety because of our jobs. Why not do it and better ourselves at the same time?
