Welcome everyone!
We're a new group and I see we've already got 28 members! Wowie!
Come in and introduce yourself, I'll go first!
My name is Kass, I'm 30 years old. Married for 4 years (together for 8), with a 3 year old daughter.
I joined MFP quite a while ago (can't remember the date, lol) but it was just for the ticker. Only recently did I venture into the message boards and 'add friends', and I'm so glad I did. What a great way to keep the momentum going. Having others who know how you feel and are working towards some of the same goals. Love being able to support others, and get the same in return and if I make a few friends along the way - great.
I've lived in and around Ottawa all my life. I've lived in Manotick, Osgoode, Gloucester, Nepean, etc. throughout the years. I used to work full time in education, and since having my daughter I stay home with her, and work p/t from home. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
Love to hear more about all of you!

Hi,
My name is Todd. I'll be 42 next month. I've lived in Ottawa since late 2007, and Indianapolis, Vancouver and Winnipeg before that. I became a public servant a few years ago and the deskjob has not agreed with my physique. I've always been overweight, but I strayed into obese range (BMI 32) this year. I began my weight loss program alone, but decided I needed more support...
I joined MFP in the last week of November 2011. I was a little surprised that there didn't seem to be a group for Ottawa, given that we have a pretty significant user base here, so I started this one.0 -
Heya! Dave here. I'm a displaced Newfie here in Ottawa since 1999. 5 years in the big smoke before that. I used to travel a lot for work and that added some weight, but I've always been a big guy. When I hit 40 I started to make changes in my life to increase physical activity... took up rugby and running. After running the Chicago Marathon in October, I finally acknowledged the fact that diet had to be a part of the solution.
I'm following the 17day diet, currently in cycle one after resets for US thanksgiving with family in Indiana and a trip to Hawaii for the Honolulu marathon last weekend (I didn't run that one, but my hubby did). Results so far have been good. Now to get back into the gym and add some strength training to the mix.0 -
Hi all... I'm Lisa, but most just call me Pooks.
I'm originally from Sudbury, Ontario, and have been in Ottawa since 2004.
I was a fit kid and teen (never tiny, but always active and healthy). I was a dancer, I played ringette, baseball and soccer, and I also took martial arts. I graduated highschool, and was readying myself for university when a series of traumatic events took place. Let's just say it involved two attempted suicide attempts by someone very close to me, drugs, guns, gangs, and death threats, among other things. For 10 years, I lived in constant fear. I learned to use food to comfort, and calm myself. Soon, I was using food to cope with all of my negative feelings. Eventually, I ate all of my feelings. Positive or negative, it didn't matter. I started putting on weight, and stopped participating in any kind of athletic activity.
A few years ago, I went to talk to my doctor to treat my depression, and to discuss my coping mechanism of choice. I was put with a group of similar people at the Ottawa Hospital, and treated for Binge Eating Disorder.
Even once I had the tools, it took me a while to start putting them to use. January 1st, 2011, I weighed in at 276lbs. Today, I weigh 224lbs. It's come off very slowly. I joined MFP to really start making my health and fitness a priority.
I joined this group a) because my dear friend toddlyons asked me to and b) because I can really use the support of people who know what it's like to struggle with weight. My spouse and stepkids are super-supportive, but I didn't have that camaraderie of people who REALLY get it... Until now. I'm not a big "online" person, so the fact that you're all local, and theoretically "meet-able" really works for me.
I'm really happy to be here, and I'm looking forward to getting to know you all!0 -
Hi,
I'm Wanda. Like Dave I'm a displaced Newfie, here in Ottawa since late 1998.
In a time, long past I was tiny and athletic. I played hockey, softball, figure skated, did gymnastics, played rugby. . you get the point. Since university I have seen the scale keep moving upwards. I take full responsibility, but did have some forces that were at work against me.
Food/eating/ dietary habits have always been a struggle for me, and have been treated for a few things over the years. Two years ago in January I was diagnosed with an under-active thyroid, so my metabolism is up and down - depending on my levels.
I joined MFP when my good friend Dave sent me the request. I figure it's time to seek support in fighting this battle.0 -
Hi,
I'm Emma, a 26 year-old psych and religion student at Carleton University. I joined MFP in November 2011, sort of fell off the wagon over the holidays, and am getting back on track.
I have never known myself to be thin, even as a child I was overweight - and not for lack of dieting! In my teens I was diagnosed with PCOS and Insulin Resistance, and in my teenage arrogance I was quite happy to ignore that little detail and pretty much each whatever I chose (and then mentally beat myself up for it later). But, this past August I realized that I'm getting to an age when children are a more likely part of my life plan, and the best way to improve my chances of becoming a mum is to lose weight, so here I am (in addition to undergoing appropriate medical care).
Currently I'm at 255 (as of this morning) and am aiming for 190-200 (I am 5'10" after all).
I'm excited to be here and get to know people, whether online or in person. :-)
Cheers,
Emma0 -
Welcome Emma! You'll get lots of great support here from the Ottawa folks...0

Hi! My name is Tanya and I was born and raised in Ottawa. I now live in Watertown NY which isnt very far. My family still lives around Ottawa so i'm there a lot. I joined the group because I am there often and I'd like to know what's going on
I have 2 great kids and a wonderful husband. I'm going back to school full time at the end of January and just enjoying being a stay at home mom till then. I have fallen in love with running and that's what I do mainly but I also love the Insanity workout.0 -
Hey everyone! I'm 24 years old and working a desk job. I love my job, but I know it's not my career path. I'm hoping to be a student again this September as I've applied with uOttawa's Education program. Fingers crossed!
I grew up between Dryden ON (North West of Thunderbay) and Port Perry ON (GTA). We were not well off, so at an early age I was already self-conscious about the way that I looked because my clothes weren't the newest and coolest. Moving around also threw off my feelings of familiarity and safety. My struggle with weight started in Grade 8. I was 135lbs and 5'7" already (basically the same as I am today). While for an adult these stats seem fine, as an eighth grader all the other girls were so much skinnier and smaller than me. I felt fat. I also started to become addicted to food. In Grade 9, I started to work at DQ. However, I also joined a kick-boxing aerobics course and I had gym class, so I never GAINED weight. I just had an unhealthy relationship with food. That was until Grade 12. I couldn't afford kick boxing class anymore as I needed to seriously start saving for University. I gained 30lbs in my final year of highschool. I think it was 30lbs. It might have been 40lbs+. I was too self conscious to look at a scale. And I was in denial. I just stuck with this mentality that I was "big boned". Thankfully, I didn't gain the Freshman 15 (actually I started to lose weight) primarily because my roommate ate super healthy and that I didn't work at a fast food place anymore. I even started using the gym at school. I met my future husband in 1st year and he's always been passionate about health and fitness. In 3rd year I weighed 155lbs. I decided to try weight watchers. I lost 20lbs! I went home one summer and found my eighth grade graduation dress.... it still fits. I broke the cycle of food addiction... for a long time. After I graduated University, my husband and I got married and decided to packback Europe for 2 months. What was a cheap, quick, light, and high energy food (since we did a lot of hiking)? Chocolate bars. Because of the physical exercise, I didnt gain any weight in Europe, but when we got back, I gained 15lbs in 2 months. I was addicted again to sugar. I also started to get depressed because the only employment I could find (in the depths of the recession) was as a cleaning lady. That sucked. A lot. Cleaning up after rich kids that get everything handed to them and disrespect their parents property (so gross) was not my idea of fulfiling work. 1 year later, I have lost those 15lbs and I have a job that I love. I want to get into shape again. And I still find myself being controlled by food. I eat very healthy meals so I feel like I have an excuse to eat chocolate, chips, bagettes, cheeses, ice cream (thats the biggy) etc. But pumping this sugar into my body is going to kill me sooner or later. I needed something that would hold me accountable!0 -
PS, sorry I wrote a novel.0

Hi Tanya & amclean!
Tanya I love your profile pic - congrats on your accomplishment! I refuse to stand side on to any camera haha!

I highly recommend taking a picture. Tuck it away and pull it back out in a few months. It keeps me going0 -
I keep a "before" picture taped to my fridge. It is inspiring! Every time I go to the fridge it makes me think about my food choice, and to think about whether I'm *actually* hungry, or just bored, thirsty, lonely, etc.
I'm definitely not brave enough to post that picture here though. Maybe when I hit goal.0 -
P.S. It's really nice to see new blood around here! Looking forward to getting to know you gals.0

Hi everyone My name is Becka. I'm 34 years old and I'm originally from SouthEast Michigan. Long story short, I used to be incredibly athletic until I was about 21 and got that good old "bad relationship". That didn't last long thank goodness and I was then on my way to a whole new life. I met a Canadian boy, moved to Ottawa in 2001, got married, became a citizen and all that jazz. Life right now consists of chasing the 5 year old around, photography as a job, hobby and passion, bootcamp and looking forward to the next big race (which is in 14 days).0

Hi,
I'm Carolyn, in my 30's, married, two dogs (a German Shepherd & Shiloh Shepherd) and began my journey this January. My weight has been consistently going up over the last few years so I'm done with feeling bad about myself and committed to changing what I don't like. I tend to do most of my workouts at home so that my dogs aren't left home alone all day and all evening. They seem to be laughing at me though when I'm going through an exceptionally vigorous painful workout.0 -
Hi everyone,
My name is Danielle. I am from Gatineau, I have traveled with my husband for a few years and now we have been living in Aylmer since 1998. I have been married for 26 years and I have 4 wonderful children. My son is 25 and my daughters are 23, 19 and almost 16. My 23 year old daughter is graduating in 2 months as a aerospatial engineer at Carleton and we are so excited. She has been the one that motivated me to start my workouts again and she is pushy, but that is what I needed:)
I work as a twin care specialist in Ottawa mainly. I am self employed and have been working with families of twins since 2000. I love it.
Looking forward to read all the posts and learning more about all of you and also encouraging you in your goals:)
Have a good day everyone:)0 -
Welcome Becka, Carolyn and Danielle!0

Hi everyone. I joined this group some time ago but I have never introduced myself. I am Buck and (like Dave & Wanda) I am also a displaced newfie. I was born in Sudbury but grew up in NFLD. I joined the military in 1989 and live in Halifax for about 18 yrs. Moved to Ottawa in 07 and still in military. Not really enjoying the desk job.
I am married with 2 kids, a dog, and a cat. Kids are 11 (boy) & 13 (girl). My wife is also on MFP and together we are trying to lose these extra pounds. She is a Caper (i say a lost newfie but she don't like that). It is good to meet everyone.0 -

Hello everyone. It is nice to know that there are others in this area that are also part of MFP. It feels like to support is much closer. I am trying to lose about 60 lbs, I am currently 205. I don't have a time frame which I know isn't good. I am fairly active and enjoy spending time outside.0
-
Hi all!
I'm Liz. I'm 27, and 257 pounds, and have tried several other sites to try and lose the 60 pounds I want rid of, but I keep failing. I'm a grad student at Carleton, and trying to balance the stress/emotional eating that I know I am prone to with enough exercise to keep me happier and healthier. I just try and keep it one day at a time, without any time-frame goals, as I don't want to set myself up for failure. I am married, but my husband isn't taking part in my weight loss journey. He's comfortable with his weight, and supports me as he can, but it can be hard sometimes to be supportive *without coming across as nagging or negative* when you aren't in on the weight loss.
I'm looking for support and encouragement so that I stick with it this time, and *finally* succeed, instead of giving up when I feel like I'm in this alone.0 -
Hi everyone,
I'm Kay and I'm a 19-year-old student at Ottawa U studying Health Sciences. I recently put on about 25 lbs in 6 months because..well..I was living and France and wasn't able to resist all the baguettes, cheese and wines But since getting home around Christmas, I have gotten back on the wagon. February was an unfortunate "break" month for me, so I'm hoping to stick to it from now on. My goal is to lose 30 pounds by my sister's wedding in October.
I am new to message boards, groups and friends, so please add me if you are looking for more. I could use the help and motivation
P.S. Nice to see so many from Newfoundland - while in France I was working at Beaumont-Hamel WW1 Memorial!0 -
Hi all!
I'm new to the group! Been on MFP for over a year now. I fell off the mfp wagon for a bit as I was pregnant with our little girl. I'm now back and stronger than ever. Ok not really, but I'm on my way to being stronger!
My favorite exercises include running, hiking, yoga, calistenics (sp) and whatever ab, or cardio workouts I can find on Youtube.
Feel free to add me on your mfp aps as well!0 -
Hi All!
My name is Erin, I was born and raised in Ottawa. I'm 32, and 181 pounds. I gained about 20 pounds since moving in with my other half last year. He doesn't care what size I am, but I do! I've joined to lose about 40 pounds, and meet like minded people to help on my journey. I am determined to make this a lifestyle change, that's the only way to do it!
If you need support or encouragement don't hesitate to friend me, or send me a message. I know how hard this can be, I've been on a weight roller coaster since I was a teenager.
Good luck everyone!0 -
Hi everyone,
I really enjoyed reading all the posts, nice to meet others who have similar challenges. My name is Monica I am 47 years old have lived in Ottawa for over 20 years . I have struggled with my weight since the age of 10, I have lost and gained several times over . I am a nurse and since starting to work rotating shifts between 12 hour days/nights I have been unable to lose any significant amount of weight. I decided after attempting several different programs that I need a eating plan that I can live with, not trying to fit my life into a eating plan, off course using healthy guidelines as a guide. Looking forward to meeting others for support, inspiration and friendship.0 -
Hey – My name is Mark… 55 and although I am originally from TO I have lived in Ottawa long enough (30 + years) to no longer support the Leafs. I work out regularly but had (have) a bit of a party life style always thinking that that extra piece of whatever or that extra pint or (2 - ?) was OK. So I went on a diet(Ideal Protein) lost 45 lbs and now I track everything I do. I still party, love Zaphods & Mavericks Ritual etc (I’m the old guy in the Zappa shirt) but a little less beer and eat much better… and by using this site I have an idea what I do to myself. The support is great and nice to be with likeminded people.

Hi all I'm Jess (insert that New Girl show song here). I've been living in Ottawa since 2006 when I came here for university at Ottawa U. Currently working 2 jobs, part time at Health Canada and part time at an optometrist. Thus, me sitting around all day sucks! I decided that because I'm turning 25 this year (in 2 weeks from today) that it is was time to get my butt in gear and get back to being healthier. I'm also heading back to school next fall at Algonquin for a post grad program, so I would love to loose the weight before then In high school I did competitive figure skating and was in pretty decent shape. I didn't gain the freshman 15, it was more like the 2nd, 3rd, 4th year and beyond weight add on lol. I joined MFP in January but didn't quite get serious about logging and exercising until about a month ago and I must say that I am feeling FANTASTIC. While I have only lost about 6 pounds so far, friends and family have noticed that I am looking healthier So that is my little blurb, just wanted to say hello all and cudos to everyone and their dedication0

Hi everyone!
My name is Chris, and I was born and raised here in Ottawa. I've been overweight since I was a teenager, but it wasn't until this year that I decided that I had to stop making excuses for myself, and really get my butt in gear. Physical activity has always been my biggest challenge, but I've made giant steps to remedy that situation. I'm currently learning to run, and hope to run my first 5k race in the next few months. I could probably do it now, but I'm still very self-conscious of the fact that I run/walk, and would ultimately like to be able to run the entire thing, or at least only walk for a short period. If there are any new runners in this group (or experienced runners who wouldn't mind helping a newer runner), I would love to find a running partner!
I was really excited to discover this group mostly because most of my friends are slim and don't understand my struggle with my weight, and my quest to change my lifestyle. They're supportive of me of course, but I would love to find a few local people (and new friends) who might want to join me for a run, a class, a workout, or even a healthy lunch.
Feel free to add me!0 -
Hi, My name is Missy and Im 29 years old and 20 weeks pregnant. Upon finding out we are going to have our second child I learned that I am still the exact same weight I was full term for my first child who will be 4 in September. Determined to not weigh 300 lbs by the end of this pregnancy I have obtained a dietician recommended by my doctor to some how loose weight safely and/or maintain current weight till I have given birth.
As my mid section is growing and my cravings are crazy this is going to be a long 5 months...lol
Wish me luck!0 -
Just saw this.
My name is Lyne, i'm 32, live in Gatineau and work for the government in Ottawa. I want to lose 45 pounds, but i've been on and off sick lately, it's so hard to keep myself on track. Moving to a new place in 2 weeks should help (mold issues in the current apartment).
That's all I can think of for now.0
