When do you become too old to play mmorpg's?

I have several people in my guild who are 40+, including my guild leader, who is an amazing woman! However, we do have some older people who are... well, old. They get cranky and don't understand the social aspect of MMOs and make it an unhappy place for everybody because they simply didn't grow up with anything like a multiplayer game. As long as you don't "act" like an old, computer illiterate grump and understand that multiplayer means you must take other people into consideration, I'd say you're in the clear As far as the RPG aspect, nobody is too old to slay dragons!0

agreed. Im in my mid-30's. my mom plays fairly decently after you explain things a few times. I am a guild leader that's a family atmosphere type guild. we have a lot of parent/child family groups with us. The oldest being a wonderful 63 year old man who is a decent player and a great guy. His son is a little older than i but has been playing for years and knows the game inside and out. Both of them are my second in command.
that being said ive come accross some jerks who are younger and who are older. Its who you as a person, not what you do in your free time, that defines you.0 -
I used to play with a grandma and a great grandma (they were mother adn daughter). They popped out kids young so.0
-
I've played with a pretty awesome grandpa, and have also played with a super b*tchy older couple who complained if anyone so much as said hell, so I've dealt with both ends of the spectrum. As long as you get along with the peeps you're playing with, go for it!0

Counldn't have said it better.. Agree 100%0 -
Got me. I'm 31, and I'm one of the younger members in my MMO group.0

I see it this way... if you are already so old you're rocking adult diapers, it's just less bathroom breaks you need to take during playtime. So I see it as a bonus being old and playing MMORPG's.0

I don't think there is an age limit. I've raided with 50/60 year olds that incorporated themselves perfectly into the game. On their other hand I did raid with some 20's that nerd raged faster than the older crowd. So it really depends on the person.
Never too old to play !0 -
I'm 48 and have played Wow almost since it came out, with breaks where I played Lotro, and tried Warhammer. I've kind of lost interest lately in Wow and am only logging on for the raids. I have SWTOR and like it, but again haven't played it in a couple of months..just seem to be taking a hiatus from the games. In my Wow guild I know a couple of the people I raid with are in their 50's. The rest I think are mostly in their 20's and 30's, but I enjoy the interaction with the younger people, it's fun being goofy with them lol.0

I don't think you can be too old to play MMOs. I used to play WoW with a 60 yr old. SWTOR with a 55yr old guild leader lol. I think just because the majority of players who are outspoken are in the teen range, that it makes people feel like may be their time has come. I totally disagree with this. Just need to find mature people and enjoy it with them. I would go back to WoW if they introduced a 18+ realm lol.0 -
My guild leader is in his 50s, our raid leader is in his 20s (my age) and everybody else is in between. Most seem to be mid 20s to early 30s. I don't think there's a "too old" as long as the person knows how to play and isn't a weirdo.0

Lots of WoW addicts out there. Does anyone play Aion, or waiting for it to become free? I have heard great things about Lotro, is it any good?0

Never.
Mhmm... wait, on second thoughts. The day u are unable to react quickly enough to get out of fire, will b the day u are too old for an mmorpg.0 -

I played Aion twice after WoW got boring. I always went back to the old WoW crack though lol. I think Rift was the game that finally drew me away. Lotro? I've never played it myself but I I've never heard anything good about it to be honest. However, I've never listened to the critics - especially if they're fanbois.0 -
GET OFF MY KEYBOARD!!!!! errr.... wait was it lawn?......damn it I am getting old I don't remember...
I am only 31 but I started in my early 20's with FFXI. Actually my very 1st MMORPG was EQ. Got a free trial. I had no idea what to do so I went outside and started killing bunnies. Saw 2 other peeps so I followed them and helped killed bunnies. I then got yelled at in caps. "GO AWAY LEAVE US BE" I had no idea how to reply back so I just quit and uninstalled it.
As for older folks I guess I am lucky since I have only played with cool people. All ranging from late 40's to early 60's. Never had any issues, they were patient, laid back, easy going folks.0 -
The thread title should be, 'Too Young For MMORPG?'
Shouldn't some of you youngsters be out dancing and meeting other young people and traipsing across our lawns together?0 -

I'm good with weirdos as long as they have good area awareness, raid awareness, and know how to push their damn buttons. Oh and show up on time for raids. IF they do that they can be as weird as they like.
My guild is mostly people in their 20s. I believe I'm the oldest.0 -
Never!0

I never had bathroom break issues with old people. It's the young Asian men who have to take cigarette breaks that get me.0 -

Now I don't have experience of anyone older than 40s on WoW, but I would have thought that teenagers are far more irritating than anyone older. I'm all for silver slayers!
I'm 40 and although I'm on a WoW break as it was becoming a bit repetative (made new main and she really isn't geared for raiding yet), I'll still be playing in years to come.0 -
Well i'm 45 and used to be in a kin called The Elders in LOTRO. We had a minmum age limit of 25 so that we didnt get leet speak, bad mouthing and the dramas you can get with teens. We could all be grumpy old people together and we shared similar interests, had similar (failing) memories and had similar issues in our lives (jobs and mortgages rather than homework and girls )
Average age was mid fourties and the oldest was almost 70 iirc.0 -

I had LotRO recommended by a friend and then dragged another friend with me to try it out; we both like it a lot better than DDO. (I will state for the record that my MMORPG experience has been Runescape and DDO...as a teen, I didn't have money for WoW and then when I was in college, the network didn't support gaming, and now I don't spend enough time gaming to justify a subscription.) So we are more casual MMORPG players, in that sense.
I think part of the attraction for us is that we already know the story line; we read the books and like the movies, so to us it's like a familiar vacation spot. DDO is distinctly...not.
IMO, older folks can be a joy to have in your guild/party because they usually are not the ones charging ahead and drawing aggro. People like my younger brother do that; kinda embarrassing. Plus, they're more likely to use complete sentences when asking/telling me things, and since I don't use a lot of leet lingo or game lingo that's really nice.
The oldest member of my DDO guild is my guild-leader's mother; she's in her 60s and she always has lots of questions. She plays to spend time with her son and daughter (my age) and us other guildies think it is the most awesome thing ever and wish that our parents would try to understand our hobbies in a similar manner.0 -
Never. My DH and I are in our late 30's and many of our guild members are 50 +. I honestly don't think there should be an age limit. My DD who is 7 plays WoW with us. Not a full time addict like we are but she loves to do the quests and kill things. Of course, we keep an eye on her and disable trade chat but we've had no issues.0

Personally, I love Lotro. I've played it for 5 years and prefer it to WoW, D&D, AoC, Conan, EverCrack and AC, all of which I've played and left. I just love the story and the people and the land its in.0 -

LOL same here, DD been playing over 5 years, since she was 9. we had chat disabled when she was younger, she's just turned 15 and now we have the profanity filter on and she has to stay in our guild, can only use vent while we're home, but most ppl dont even realize she's young, even when she was younger, until she talked on vent.
it has a lot more to do with maturity than with age imo. Ive had old geezers who whine and are cranky, ive had older teenagers or late 20 year olds who whine and are cranky. Its the person, not the age.0 -
I suppose you are too old to play MMO's when you realize your gaming rig can't get any bandwidth from 6ft under...0

I guess I am not too old to play games, I just have less free time. Sigh...0

The people definitely help the game a lot. I tried WoW and SWTOR since I started LotRO and just couldn't get into them. Just not the same sort of crowd you get in LotRO. Don't know what it is, but it's something special and apparently unique (from what I've been told by people who came to the game from others, instead of the other way around like me)0 -

its the same with Rift, people are so very nice, helpful, friendly, etc there, as opposed to other mmo's where the most rude answer wins0 -

I was going to try Rift but a lot of my friends did Beta and got bored really fast so I never did. But isn't that atmosphere nice? I mean, you'll always get trolls (now that I switched to a larger server I see more of them), but it's great when a bad group of people is a rarity.0
