used to run - can I sign up for a 5k in July/Aug/Sept?

Hi - I used to run for fitness before I had two kids over the last 3 years. Now that the littlest is 1.5, I want to try again.
I think I'm starting from scratch, except for knowing what to expect a little bit, so I think C25K is right for me. But, I'd like to motivate myself by signing up for a race. Some of the articles say to wait till you've been running 6 months.
My question is, can I sign up for a race 3-4 months away, if I'm only planning to run it to complete it? Any advice?
Thanks!

I agree! Do it! As long as its a couple months out and you stick with your training it will be great motivation.0

You can absolutely do a race right after finishing the C25k! You probably won't be the fastest person there, but I don't see any reason to wait 6 months after you start running.
I did my first race about 3 weeks after finishing C25k and I was pleased with my time and had fun. Plus, having a race on the calendar helps for motivation too!0
