Had a doctors visit this morning and discovered I have gained 10lbs in a very short amount of time Im up to 187 (cue tears) My doctor treats me sypmtomatically thankfully and is switching me from T4 meds (synthroid) to T3 meds (cytomel?) but she, and any doc ive ever had SWEAR that my weight cannot be blamed on my thyroid, especially since Ive beenon synthroid for over a year?
Any thoughts?
If its really not my thyroid Im at a loss because I work out at least 4 times week Ive tried 1200 calories a day and keeping it between 1400-1600 a day, Ive tried doing the three meals or spliting it up into 6 meals Ive upped my protien and fiber NOTHING works. I can run 2.5-3 miles several times a week as well as as leat two days of weight training. ive taken classes at the gym to be sure I know how to use the weight machines. Im at my wits end really.

It might not be your thyroid, per se -- but other factors in your body that are out of whack because of your thyroid. Things like Insulin Resistance, Reverse T3 and Adrenal Fatigue -- they need to dig deeper and get to the root cause.0

Im pretty sure im not insulin resistant diabetes runs rampant in my family and I get checked frequently for that. What is reverse T3?0
-
usmcwife, I could have written your post myself. I just got my prescription for Armour today, and I'm switching to a wheat-free diet for the next two months. I'm going to leave the rest of my diet/exercise plan as it is because I believe it is quite healthy. I have Hashimoto's and my recent labs showed that my antibodies were high, as was my TSH - my T3 was very low. It takes time and patience to sort out the different factors but this forum has helped guide my search and encouraged me not to give up - good luck!0

-- and to answer your question, here's a link about reverse T3 : http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/reverse-t3/0

Thanks! My doctor is VERY against Armour but she will prescribe it, if paitents are adamant but I agreed to tried cytomel first ( I think thats what its called?)
I also have hasimotos, and she suggested I only have one serving of carbs a day (aka two pieces of bread) so basically get rid of grain/wheat products. Let me know how eliminating wheat products works for you please!0 -
I'm on armour and I am also Gluten free and have been for about 6 months... and I have lost a total of 10 pounds... it's VERY SLOW but it is possible.
I am also trying vegetarianism in hopes of speeding my weight loss up. I am not too keen on meat anyway other than BACON and MCDONALDS....... That's it0 -

I do eat meat, but I eat a lot of veggies every day --- there's some great veggie protein shakes out there- Vega One is good but my favorite is Vegamax from Lifetime Fitness.
Don't use soy for your protein -- very bad for your thyroid!

Really? Why is soy bad?0
-
When my daughter was a baby back in 2001 I spoke to the baby forumula company and when they discovered we had a family history of thyroid issues, they told me not to give her a soy based milk subsititue for our baby . So we used goat.
SOY has lots of hormones from memory but someone else wil no doubt be well up on it.0 -
I've had a shocking lifelong experience with soy. I still have it occasionally but the effect it's had on my family is awful.
You can read my story on this link;

Soy is in pretty much everything as they use it as thickening agents and heaps of other boosters.0 -
WOW!! I knew soy could cause goiters, but I had no idea about all these other potential side effects -- I'm thinking it's because of a high volume of soy that you and your children had as a milk replacement.
I am mostly dairy free also (I cheat with some cheese once in a while). I use unsweetened almond milk in coffee and cereal. I like coconut milk a lot, but it's much higher in calories - still nice for a treat. And there is So Delicious coconut milk yogurt, coffee creamer, etc... all very good.

I am in the same boat you are. I just got back from the Dr. and we went over my insulin levels and a discussion on Leptin. If you are not getting a full panel from your Dr. I would ask for one. I recommend the fasting panel with your female hormones, Vitamin D, Reverse T3, cholesterol etc. If you have a normal high reading on your Glucose / Hemoglobin you may also be insulin resistant. There are many factors other than your Thyroid at work here. The labs can be expensive but, at least it will validate what you are dealing with and give you a starting point. Hormonal imbalance, insulin resistance, Leptin issues all play a role in how our fat is being used in our bodies. If you Dr. won't give you the full panel test I would find someone else. But, you should be able to talk them into it. Best of luck, don't give up!0 -

I have Hashi's as well, wheat and soy are my enemies...try the sprouted breads they make great toast and you can get Gluten free. You can also make your own bread with Gluten free flour it can be a delicious treat!0 -

Ive had the wide spectrum fasting blood panel at least twice in the past year doc never said anything was out of whack (other than my thyroid and having hashi)
Isnt insulin resistance basically pre-diabetes? If so I def do not have that. Both my parents, and both sets of grandparents have diabetes. Its severe on my moms side (my grandpa died at a young age from it) so my docs test me periodically for diabetes and nothing has shown up so far0 -

Insulin resistant isn't really pre-diabetes. It just means that when you consume carbohydrates, the insulin in your body doesn't allow your muscles to use the carbs for fuel. Instead, it takes the carbs and converts them to fat and puts them on your middle!! No matter how much you exercise, your body will not burn that fat either...
One cheap way to ascertain if you are insulin resistant is to go on a very low carb diet for a week or two and lose weight... once you deprive your body of carbs like bread, rice, pasta, cereal, cookies, candy, etc... it should break the cycle. You can get your carbs from green veggies and some low glycemic fruit like apples and blueberries.
Reverse T3 is also a little known, but common problem... the way my doctor explained it to me -- Reverse T3 is a "blank" version of the T3 hormone. In ancient times, if a lion was chasing you and you ran up a tree to get away - and the lion stayed at the tree for a few days wanting to eat you -- your body would produce Reverse T3 to plug up the T3 receptors in your cells -- this essentially causes your metabolism to stop and your body to use very few calories. In modern times, we can get high Reverse T3 from extreme dieting, intense exercise with insufficient calories or extreme stress. It's almost impossible to get rid of Reverse T3 when on T4 treatment only. I got rid of mine by going on a very low dose of Armour - yes, it forced me to be quite hypo for a couple of weeks, but it flushed out the REverse T3. Another way to get rid of it is to go on T3 only and completely deprive your body of T4. Again, if you are not monitored this can cause you to go very hypo.
Of course most doctors don't test for Reverse T3!!0 -

Wait going on t3 only can make you more hypo?! Isnt cytomel t3? how in the world is that helpful?0 -

hmmm this is interesting. I am a sugar addict. Im working on weeding out as much as refined sugar as possible. I really don't eat a lot of breads/pasta so that shouldn't be hard. Is quinoa an acceptable subsitute for rice? Or does it cause the same problems?0
