Top ten reasons given to ban same-sex marriages :

    1) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester and air conditioning.

    2) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

    3) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

    4) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn’t changed at all like many of the principles on which this great country was founded; women are still property, blacks still can’t marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

    5) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of marriages like Britney Spears’ 55 hour marriage would be destroyed.

    6) The only valid marriages are those which produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn’t be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren’t full yet, and the world needs more children.

    7) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

    8) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That’s why we have only one religion in America.

    9) Children can never succeed without both a male and a female role model at home. That’s why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

    10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven’t adapted to cars, the service-sector economy or longer life spans.

    This is getting stolen.

As to everyone else in this group, it's nice to seem people who are polar opposites on so many other issues can come together on this one.

I find it interesting that polls show movement toward the acceptance of gay marriage, but when it's actually put to the vote is a completely different story.

This may be an expected result for NC, but if I'm not mistaken, California did the same thing in '08.

That's because in the south, anti-gay groups actually go to churches to rile them up to vote. This is not uncommon. Same thing happened in the 2004 election season. I was living in Tennessee at the time, and knew of dozens of instances where churches were showing anti-abortion and anti-gay propaganda during service.

Furthermore, if we let the populous have their way in the 60's, there would be no civil rights laws in the south. Voting on topics affecting the rights of a minority is never going to turn out the way it should.

Like Adrian said, I totally want to post this everywhere. Very nice to see every argument taken apart one at a time with simple, quick logic.

Sad thing is, I saw every single one of those in the Chit Chat thread just a moment ago, most of them from a single person.

I try to stay positive. I like to think it's all just delay tactics. It will eventually be accepted everywhere. It may take longer than it should (it already has) but nothing can stop a good and just idea.

Some day our children will look on us in shame that there was ever even a debate about this. At least I'll know what side I was on.

These are my thoughts as well.

I saw a cartoon this week that sums this up nicely. It was 4 panels and in the first 3 it's a white father talking to his white son. The father states that he was told his marriage would ruin the sanctity of marriage. That it was lead to the legalizing of bestiality and incest. In the 4th panel the mother appears in the scene and the father states that he didn’t care and says “I still married your mother.” The mother is black. Now if only we could get everyone to realize this same principal applies to gay marriages as well.

I just finally found that locked thread in the chit chat forum. Everyone of those people who were anti-gay marriage made idiotic arguments. Every single one. I can't even logically put this into a sentence how absolutley dumb their arguments were.

it's the simple fact that so many of our citiizens don't realize freedom only works when you support the rights of people you don't agree with.

    100% agree here.

In 1954, it was a VERY BIG DEAL for my Catholic mom to marry my Protestant dad.

I'm hoping in another 50-some years, this current debate seems just as silly and antiquated. In another 5 years would be better. Now would be best.

I don't understand how your country works. It simply doesn't make sense to me that it wouldn't just be allowed everywhere. I mean, gay marriage is legal, Canada wide.

Do it. Because A. We're supposed to be able to debate things here, that's the point of the group.

    B. If I don't find something to argue about I will have to actually do my work.

Wait a minute.. you're saying gays are allowed to marry in Canada and the children haven't gone hungry and fires don't randomly break out all over the place?

    Are you sure?

If you don't like gay marriage, don't get gay married

If you're against something that doesn't effect you, get a life.

I grew up in the Carolinas. It's a beautiful area, and I was really hoping they would vote to protect the rights of ALL Americans to marry, have domestic partnerships, and be happy. Sadly, that wasn't the case. Before you go all "hulk" on NC, consider this. North Carolina is *the very last* southern state to pass such an amendment to their constitution. While bass-akwards it may be, it shows that they are more liberal than much of the remaining South. They didn't pass such a law when other states passed them (most in the early 2000s), and it also passed with a much smaller margin than most other states. You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_constitutional_amendments_banning_same-sex_unions_by_type

There are 31 states that have provisions against same-sex marriage, and NC was just the latest of a long line of states to pass such measures. Does it suck? Yes. Is it a terrible, bigoted decision? Absolutely. Does it automatically mean that people who live in NC are inbred hicks who can't tell their *kitten* from their elbow? Not really. It shows an impressive level of restraint to wait, listen to the constituents and more forward on an issue. The problem is that the right to marry should be a fundamental right for *all* people. It shouldn't be up to the states to decide. Sadly, though, it is right now.

So what can we do? Not much. But the big thing we can do is choose not to vacation and travel in states that have laws which restrict the rights of its citizens, and let them know *why* we have chosen to do so. Write them, and work to push for a change in the American Constitution. Not the state constitution- the US one which holds greater precedent over state laws. Bashing North Carolinians for voting based on their beliefs will not bring about change. You have to speak in their language, otherwise they will think you're a chicken strutting around on a chess board, claiming you've won because you threw the pieces around.

When I wrote to my senators to oppose CISPA, I wrote from their viewpoint because I knew that appealing to MY demographic wouldn't change their mind. You have to use their own thought processes and figure out a way to make your point in a way they HAVE to agree to it. So, anyway, that's my piece. Don't hate NC, they should be admired for holding out so long, but chastised for their decision. Chastise them not by name calling, but by approaching the issue from their stance and exploiting the flaws in their logic in a way they would agree with.

I'm against genital mutilation of African girls.... that doesn't really affect me....
