Insulting things people do because you're tall

I just came back from the shops and met my neighbour as I came in. As I walked past him he feigned fear, put his hands up and crouched down a bit...you know, the whole "don't hit me" pose.

I find that really really annoying. I know he thinks he's funny. But he really isn't.

What's funny about pretending someone is about to hit you? What am I supposed to do with that? Think it's funny that he's suggesting I'm violent? Would he have done that if I were 5', not 6' tall? I don't think so.

It's people like him that make tall people uncomfortable in their own skin. I blame people like him every time I see a tall woman with horrible posture, hunched over trying to appear smaller.

Celebrate your tallness women of MFP! And tell me the insulting things people do to you so I know it's not just happening to me! :noway:

The comments I get because I like to wear heals is so annoying.

I bought a really cute pair of wedges and have worn them to work on occasion, people are constantly saying "that someone my height DOES NOT need heals" and I should be wearing flats!

Anyone have a good comeback to this?

The following is not an insult, simply a weird conclusion to jump to because my height.

When I was in university I worked at a coffee shop. One of my friends who is also a tall girl worked close by so we would often sit outside and have lunch together. I later found out that 2 different customers thought I was a lesbian and she was my girlfriend. When I asked one of them why they assumed that, he said because we are both tall and had the same kind of retro fashion style. Yes Sir.

andreaisme, ugh, that reminds me of something that happened to me a few years ago, that I totally forgot about until now..

I was at a mall kiosk getting a cover for my phone and a guy started chatting with me. Out of the blue he said, "You must play softball, right?" And I said, "No, why?" And he replied, "Well, you know .. " And I said, "Um.. no, I *don't* know" .. Then the jerk says, "Well, I just figured you were a softball playing lesbian.. Girls your size don't attract guys, ya know?"

WHAT THE F***. I seriously don't understand people sometimes. I don't care if you think I'm a lesbian, that's not what bothered me, but to make a crack about my size.. so damn rude. I was so humiliated.

I had a elderly gentleman (and I use that term loosely) last week tell me that 155 (my goal weight at 5'11) was too "heavy" for a woman and I needed to keep losing, just like 10-15 more pounds or so. He also mentioned that men aren't attracted women of my height and size so I might as well be lesbian. It took all I had not to knock him off his bar stool.

So it seems we need a standard reply to the "you're tall, you must be a lesbian since you can't get a guy" remarks.

I'll start us off with "If all men were like you I'm pretty sure every woman would choose to be a lesbian". Who's got better?

I am right with the "playas" here... I played, too...Full Division I scholarship....I am one of seven children in my family, so it really helped my Mom and Dad out...I still play when I can, especially now that I am losing some weight!

When we used to travel with our basketball team and had to wear our "travel gear", we would be at the airport, strewn across an entire gate with a big basketball on our chest on our gear and some little woman or man would come up and ask what kind of team we were... My response... "Gymnasts", "Horse Jockeys", or "We're going to the "Little People" convention"...

I've also had some insulting, perverted proposals or requests...from both men and women...

A funny comment from a very old little drunk man in a bar..."Do you carry a license for those legs, Love?" lol. Dirty old guy.

So nice to share comments that someone else will relate to... Glad to see you other tall ladies on here!!

My response... "Gymnasts", "Horse Jockeys", or "We're going to the "Little People" convention"...

This just brought back some funny (happy) memories....can't say how many times this happened at restaurants for our "pre-game-meal" the DUH factor makes you shake your head, but I *wish* I'd been confident enough to use the "Gymnast" or "Horse Jockey" response!

People are idiots. Period :O) And frankly, we are awesome, and even more awesome because we are tall and beautiful and glamazons! I am so tired of people getting offended by people (usually men) saying stupid **** to us just because they think they have a right to. They are idiots, either have a little fun with it and make a quick sarcastic comment, or just blow it off... They do it because they are a) intimidated b) insecure and/or c) just plain old ignorant.

Walk tall ladies! Deep down those men are attracted to you :O) and we ALLLLLLLLLLLLL know it!

I have had the basketball question asked at least 1000x's lol. It gets a little annoying sometimes but it doesn't insult me. What does insult me is when people say I don't need to wear high heels(usually other women..who are just hating anyways). I didn't know I had to be a certain height to wear heels lol really? Also I can't stand when people stare me up and down like I'm some kind of circus freak, because I don't do that to people. Hmmm what else....the crouching thing also...acting like I'm going to hit you, please don't do that sir...it is always men who do this to me. Now my husband will do it but it's fine when he does it because he's joking around with me because he is not as tall as I am, but if I don't know you like that...it is insulting and disrespectful to do to women just because they are tall. And last but not least..ummm sir do not use a perverted pick up line on me like "I would bleep your tall *** so hard" I swear this is a true story ladies. This guy just busted into the gas station,looked at me and said that. It always seems like some shorter guys that prefer tall women feel like they can say anything out of their mouths. Of course im gonna let them know I'm married but if I weren't they would never get a chance. Just sad.

I have a friend who makes Chewbacca noises at me. He also tells people not to mess with Sasquatch. It kinda hurts my feelings but I always get him back cause he is short and ugly. So there.

I used to get the basketball question all the time when I was younger (and smaller). I never did play basketball though - didn't care for it. I DID play rugby and I rowed though. I also played soccer one year and got volunteered to be the goalie because of my height :S

I don't think I have ever felt feminine. I am 5'11" and have no hips or butt at all (I do have boobs though). My measurements for my wedding dress (8yrs ago) were the same for my chect, waist and hips. I would love to rock a dress and heels once I lose another 100lbs

I ran into a old acquaintance over the weekend who is about 6 ft. 3 and it was so nice to talk to another woman without having to look down or crane my neck. I felt a bit short, which is always a weird feeling.

She was so surprised to see that my now grown daughter was only about 5 ft. 8!

I don't mind the basketball question because at least they are implying that I am still athletic looking! I enjoyed using my long legs to advantage. I swam competitively for years and also did the whole Martial Arts thing for a long time. Both were lots of fun, but I couldn't compete in certain fighting events because they only had two weight classes. It was as if it was unheard of for someone like me to even be there. Odd.

I remember the inferences that I was somehow not feminine looking and decided to soften up the butchy 80s haircut I had and always make sure I've got some bling on. It was amazing how curly hair and a beaded necklace silenced that criticism.

As to the high heels. I enjoy wearing them now and again, but less and less as I get older. They are just plain fun once in awhile.
