Milk/Calcium and meds

Hello

I am reading lots of conflicting info regarding milk and hypo meds. It says on the interweb than you shouldn't have calcium within a few hours of taking your meds. Is this just calcium suppliments or things like milk?

I love a bowl of porridge with semi skimmed milk in the morning. Even if I leave it until an hour after my tablet is this a bad idea?

Thanks

That should be alright. Calcium occurs naturally in milk and won't have as strong of an effect on your thyroid meds.

I have hypothyroidism and hypoparathyroidism (which pretty much means I have to take calcium supplements all day to prevent seizures and other issues) so I have quite the balancing act with my calcium and thyroid meds, and I've never had a problem with milk in the morning!

It's best to keep anything with calcium added about 5 hours away from your thyroid meds - be careful of OJ with calcium added, multivitamins, etc.

And if you want to take calcium on its own, the best time to do it would be right after you've finished eating dinner. If you're taking vitamin D (which is highly recommended) - take that separate from your calcium and on a somewhat empty stomach (so, perhaps mid-morning).

I agree that should be ok -- I take my thyroid meds in the wee hours of the morning - I always wake up around 3-4 am. I take my Vitamin D at around 7:30am before breakfast. I take my Calcium supplement after lunch. Then my last thyroid med is around 7pm.

i was told not to take calcium within 3 hours of taking my levothyroxine as it interferes with the meds. this includes milk cheese etc and anything with calcium added. i take my meds just before i go to bed which the dr has agreed to so i can have cereal and milk for breakfast if i like.
    hope that helps

I have read conflicting things too but just to be safe, I dont have milk, dairy, etc for about 4 hours after taking my meds. I almost ALWAYS eat yogurt for breakfast, now I eat it for a mid-morning snack instead. I would rather be safe than sorry. Someone told me to be careful of strawberries and almonds too.. which is funny because my typical breakfast was yogurt, strawberries, and some almonds. LOL, no wonder the meds werent working!!

Very new study says Calcium tabs may be harmful. I prefer to get my vitamins from food. The more I read, the less vitamins I take. One after the other have proved not beneficial if not down right dangerous to your health. I stopped Ca as I have a problem with Ca and with Vitamin D sensitivity due to another disease.
